IMPROVEMENT IN FOOT-RESTS FOR CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,506, dated October 23, 1877; application filed March 10, 1877.

' have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rest Chairs, of which the follow ing is a specification:

This invention relates to that class of footrest chair having the rest arranged within the supporting frame-work of the chair, to be put into and out of position for use as a rest for the legs and feet of the occupant, as he may so desire.

The improvement will be fully hereinafter described; and has for its object to furnish a foot or leg rest which can be swung beneath or out from the chair, and be held in either adjustment, and at the same time the rest is constructed so as to be capable of being extended or contracted longitudinally, for increasing or decreasing the length of the rest, as will be fully hereinafter set forth,'and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying plate of drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section from front to rear of a chair, showing the rest in position for use, and by dotted lines as closed and out of position for use. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 00 m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail view, showing a modification in construction and arrangement of the foot-rest for being opened out and closed.

In the drawings, A represents a chair-frame, of any suitable construction, B being the supporting or leg frame, 0 the seat, and D the back.

E is a bar or rod, arranged transversely within the leg-frame B, below the seat 0, and for being turned in bearings of the chairframe.

F is the foot or leg rest, and a a arms,which connect s'aidrest to the said rod E, and so bent that, if the rest be brought to the frontof the chair by turning its carrying-rod E in the proper direction therefor, the rest will then be in such relation to the lay of the chair-seat as to constitute a rest or support for the legs of the occupant, provided it is then properly sustained.

b is a notchedwheel on rest-carrying rod E,

and c a spring slide-bolt, which is arr nged on chair-frame for being engaged with the notched wheel I), to hold, through said wheel, the rod E from turning.

The notches of said wheel are in such relation to the positions of the rest when within or without the chair-frame as to enable the shaft E to be locked against movement, and thereby the rest is fixed in its positions of use or non-use, as may be desired.

d at are a series of arms, which are arranged and connected together in a manner similar to the well-known lazy-tongs, so-called, (see Figs. 1 and 2,) or to the common and wellknown slides or bars of extension-tables. (See Fig. 3.) These arms dare connected at one end to the carrying-arm's a for the rest F, and at the other end to the rest F, and between such two connections they are free to open out from and close up on each other, to bring the rest either more or less in advance of the chairseat, as may be desired by the occupant.

A rest constructed to open and close, substantially as herein described, obviously may be applied to other constructions and arrangements of a carrying-frame from that herein particularly described.

O is a crank-handle on rest-carrying shaft E for convenience in turning it to put the rest into and out of position for use. Q

\Vhen desired to place the rest into or out of position for use, first disengage the bolt 0 from the notched wheel I), and then turn the rod or shaft E either to the right or left, as the case may be, after which interlock the bolt and notched wheel to then fasten the rest in position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

The foot or leg rest, fastened to the bent arms a of a shaft, E,turning in the chair framework, in combination with the notched wheel I) on said shaft and bolt 0 of the chair, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
