d Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in pencils, and particularly to a flexible lead pencil, and it is the principal object oi my invention to provide a llexible pencil, which in its straightened position may be used as writing implement and which is provided with an eye or loop which may be engaged by the pencil point to be heid therein when the pencil is to be .pocketed. The flexible part of the pencil is preferably made of spiral spring metal, the uppermost winding ci which is formed into the holder loop or eye. The end at which the loop is formed carries a hollow, substantially cylindrical container' for reserve leads and an eraser or the like.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a llexible writing infnolementI which may conveniently be used as a compass when properly bent whereby adjustable distancing pieces are provided which can be readily locked in their relative adjusted positions by suitable set screws.
Still another object of :my invention is the provision of a flexible writing implement or compass the one end of which carries the usual lead feed point and the other an adjustable pin.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a flexible Writing implement which may readily be used either as an ordinary pencil in its straightened position or which may be suitably bent for use as a compass whereby adjustable lugs or blocks on the flexible part of the implement, may be properly adjusted or distanced and locked in this position by means of set screws held in threaded openings of the lugs or blocks, and an eye or loop formed with the flexible part is adapted to be engaged by one of the end points to hold the implement in proper form for pocketing.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a flexible pencil and compass of simple and therefore inexpensive construction yet durable and highly eflicient in operation.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds and will then be specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the iiexible pencil constructed according to my invention, ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the pencil iiexed or bent for pocketing.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of another form of flexible pencil to be used as compass.
Fig. 4 shows the compass pencil of Fig. 5 straightened.
Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a modied form of compass pencil, ready for use.
Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Fig. '7 shows the flexible pencil compass of Fig. 5 flexed for pocketing.
As illustrated in Figures l and 2 the exible pencil constructed according to my invention consists of a pencil or lead feed point l0 of ordinary well known construction, a iiexible median piece ll, preferably made of spiral spring metal, which however may also be made of any other flexible material, such as for instance rubber of the like, and an end piece l2 having the' form o1" a sleeve or container for lead, eraser, etc, and removably connected with the flexible median part.
The last or uppermost Winding of the spiral spring forming the median part of the pencil is formed into a loop or eye i3 for the purpose of receiving and holding the feed point for the lead when the pencil is to be pocketed, as for instance illustrated in Figure 2.
The elastic or exible median piece permits furthermore also the use oi the pencil as compass, as shown in Figure 3.
The flexible median part 14 in this form has at one of its ends the usual pencil feed point l5, and at its other end a holder i6 for the compass pm 17. In order to permit the use of the ilexible pencil as a compass, the same is equipped with the adjustable connecting pieces 18, 19 having elongated slots 20, 2l respectively and each provided at one end with a sleeve 22, 23 through which the ends of the liexible pencil pass. A set screw 2e passes through the slots of the pieces 18, i9 and has at its rear a head 25.
In Figures 4 to 7, I have illustrated a modinca-tion of my iiexible pencil compass comprising a flexible median part 26, one end of which carries the usual pencil feed point 2'7 for the lead pencil 2S while the other end is provided with a feed sleeve 29 for successively feeding the compass needle or pin point 30. One end of the spiral spring from which the pencil is made is formed into a loop or eye 31.
Lugs or blocks 32, 33 are movably located on the flexible part 2S and are held at the proper distance apart by means vof an elongated, slotted bar or connecting piece 34 having an elongated slot 35 through which extend the ends of adjusting screws 36, 37 into suitably threaded bores of the blocks 32, 33.
The operation of my flexible pencil as such L and as a compass will be readily understood from the above description by simultaneously having reference to the drawing, and it will be clear that the flexible pencil in its straight or extended position may be conveniently used as an ordinary writing pencil, whereby the loop or eye will eiTectively prevent a rolling off of the pencil from a table etc. In its use the iiexible pencil part is bent as illustrated in Figures 3 and 5 and the shanks thus formed are properly distanced by the operation of the set screws 24 and 36, 37 respectively. When not in use the pencil point 27 may be engaged in the loop and eye 31.
It will be understood that I have described and shown the preferred forms of my device only as some examples of the many possible ways to practically construct the same, and that I may make such changes in the general arrangement and the construction of the minor details thereof as come within the scope of the appended claims without departure from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A flexible Writing implement comprising a median part of spiral spring metal, a lead feed at one end and a pin at its other` end, and means for holding the Shanks of the flexible median part when bent properly distanced for permitting the use of the implement as a compass.
2. A exible writing implement adapted for use as a compass comprising a flexible median part of spiral spring metal, a pencil feed point at one end of said implement and a compass pin at the other, blocks or lugs having threaded openings movably arranged on said median part, and a slotted connecting piece, set screws passed through the slot in said connecting piece and engaging in the openings of said lugs to properly distance the shanks of the bent median part, and an eye or loop formed at one end for the reception and holding of the other end of said implement for pocketing the same.
3. In a Writing implement, a stem of a plurality of spiral spring metal convolutions to be bent and adapted for use as a compass, a pin holding sleeve for said compass at one end of the implement, a pin adjustably arranged in said sleeve, and a lead pencil feed at the opposite end of said implement, and means to properly adjust and hold the shanks of said implement when bent at a desired distance permitting its use as a compass.
4. A flexible writing implement comprising a coiled spring body composed of a closely wound spiral spring, an eye or loop formed with the outermost end of said spring for the reception and holding of the other end of said implement when exed or bent for pocketing.
