DETACHABLE CONNECTING MEANS Filed June 25, 1927 Patented Jan. 30, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Alex F. Hillstrom and Victor Petterson, Chicago,
Ill., assigncrs to Henry B. Floyd, Chicago, Ill.
Application J une 7 Claims.
This invention relates to detachable connections and more particularly to bed post attaching means, although it may be employed with equal advantage for other purposes.
It contemplates more especially the provision of means for enabling the ready association and disassociation of complemental members to effect a rigid detachable joinder therebetween.
Numerous devices have heretofore been proposed for effecting the ready association and disassociation of complemental units, but these have not proved entirely satisfactory in that they are expensive, and not entirely effective in assembling complementary members with facility; therefore much inconvenience and labor is entailed in the use thereof.
Further, it is exceedingly desirable to provide means for effecting a joinder of complemental members in reversible positions so as to enable the disposition thereof in variable relation with facility.
One object of the present invention is the provision of novel means for effecting the rigid association or disassociation of complemental elements.
Another object is the provision of slidable cooperating means to effect the ready association and disassociation of members.
A further object is to provide simple and inexpensive means for enabling the detachable connection of members disposed in rigid relation to each other.
A still further object is to provide means capable of variable co-operation to enable reversible connection therebetween.
Still a further object is to provide means to effect a rigid joinder between complemental members of a bed to enable convenient assembly thereof.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description of an illustrated embodiment of the present invention.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a sectional view in elevation of a device embodying features of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view in elevation disclosing complemental members of a bed assembled in a reversed position;
Figure 3 is a plan View in section taken substantially along the line III- III of Figure l;
Figure 4 is a side view in elevation of the device disclosed in Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a view in elevation of one of the 25, 1927. Serial No. 201,314
engaging means employed in association with a member; and
Figure 6 is a View in elevation of means capable of co-action with the means disclosed in Figure 5 to effect a rigid joinder between complemental members.
The structure selected for illustration is shown in association with complemental members constituting component parts of a bed frame; however, it may be employed with equal advantage for effecting a rigid joinder between other members.
The complementa-1 members comprise, in this instance, a bed post 1() -consisting of the usual metallic tube preferably though not essentially of rectangular configuration. To enable a rigid joinder of the bed post 10 with parallel disposed bars 11 disposed between the end faces of the bed to constitute the spring support, a plate 12 is riveted or otherwise 10 by virtue of its angularly related shank 13 which has an arcuate depression 14 co-actable with the exterior of a round post as distinguished from the flat surface with which it is shown to contact. A member 15 is disposed within the post l0 to receive fasteners such as the rivets 16 therethrough, thereby permanently affixing the plate 12 to the post 10.
It is to be noted that the member 15 has arcuate surface 17 circle so that it can be reversed to contact with a circular surface of a round post. This arrangement enables the attachment of the plate 12 to either a fiat or arcuate surface which are interchangeably used in'the manufacture of beds. 9
As shown, the member 12 projects from the face of the bed post 10 and terminates in an arcuate edge 18 which is shaped to define a hook 19 in communication with a vertically disposed slot 15 communicating with an edge thereof. Obviously the slot 20 may be provided in the plate 12 in any suitable position it preferably extending in a vertical direction to receive a member complemental thereto to effect a rigid joinder between fixed to the bed posts constituting a segment of a the angle bars 11 arranged to maintain a bed 100 spring thereon.
To enable the ready association and disassociation of the bars 11 with respect to the bed post 10, means capable of cooperation with the slot 20 are aflixed thereto. The cooperating means consist in this instance of an elliptical plate 22 having one edge 23 thereof substantially straight to coact with a correspondingly shaped edge of the slot 20. The other edge 24 thereof tapers toward 110 a midpoint 25 which is removed sufficiently from the edge 23 to permit the disposition Vof the plate 22 Within the slot 20. It is to be noted that the tapering edges 24 facilitate the reception of the plate 22 Within the slot 20 in either direction, the portion 25 contacting withV the edge of the slot 20 in operative position to insure a rigid connection therebetween Without permissive lateral movement.
Accidental removal of the plate 22 from the slot 20 is prevented by associating a plurality of discs 26, in this instance three, with the plate 22 in any appropriate manner so that portions thereof will project beyond the edges of the plate 22 to insure the guided disposition thereof Within the slot in only a vertical direction, the projecting peripheral edges 27 of the discs 26 being spaced from the face of the bars 11 by the plate 22 to form a guideway therebetween to receive the slotted plate 12.
The discs 26 consist in this instance of a plurality of circular plates having reduced shanks 28 which project through suitable apertures in the plate i7 and bars 11 so that the extremities thereof may be flattened as at 29 to maintain the discs 26 and plate 22 xed to the bars 11. The circular discs 26 are preferably disposed in alternate relation so that the portions thereof projecting over the plate 22 dene a guide on both the edges 23 and 24, the latter edge being provided with a circular disc 26 at the point 25 dened by the angularly related portions thereof. The other discs 26 overlap the edge 23 near the extremities of the plate 22 to slidably guide the complemental members 10 and 11 to a position effecting a rigid joinder therebetween. It
is to be noted that the plate 22 having the discs 26 fixed thereto to dene projecting' flanges 27 can be introduced Within the slot 20 from either end thereof, thereby enabling the bars l1 which preferably are of angular cross-section to be reversed. This arrangement is very advantageous in bed constructions, not only because it affords the disposition of bed springs 30 thereon at various altitudes, but also effects the connement thereof Within predetermined limits dened by the vertical flange 31 of the angle bar 11. (Fig. 1.)
It will be apparent that novel means have been provided to enable the ready association and disassociation of Vcomplemental members so that they may be assembled with ease and Without entailing much labor and expense.
Various changes may be made in the embodiment of the invention herein specifically described Without departing from or sacricing any advantages thereorn as dened in the appended claims.
We claim:
