STEPHENS, ALL OF WICHITA GOUNTY, TEXAS REEL Application filed October 2, 1929. Serial No. 396,865.
The object of this, our present invention is the provision of a hose reel adapted primarily for use at automobile filling stations for supplying automobile radiators with water which shall be of a construction and arrangement of parts to insure economy and service.
A further object is the provision of a reel for this purpose that is mounted on a suitable stand, the mount for the reel being such as to serve as a conductor of water for the hose that is wound around the reel, the said reel being turned by spring means to wind the hose thereon, means for regulating or equalizing the tension of such spring means, means for checking the movement of the reel when the hose is unwound therefrom or when the hose is wound thereonto, and means for locking the reel when the hose is wound therearound or when the hose is partly drawntherefrom. t I
A still further ob ect 1s the prov1s1on of a device for this purpose in which the parts constituting the same may be wholly conimprovement is capable of extended applicealed and thereby protected.
The invention willbe fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form part of the application, with the understanding, however, that the cation and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawings nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therefrom as do not affect the spirit of the of the hose is guided through the box-like mouth of the stand.
Figure is a detail sectional View to illustrate the hydraulic check or brake.
Figure 6 is a sectional View approximately on the line 66 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a face view of the spirally wound cone to which the flexible element for the spring is attached.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the vertically disposed elongated base portion of the casing and the numeral 2 designates the round upper head of the casing.
if desired both sides or faces of the head 2 may be closed, and the head is provided with an opening that communicates with the hollow base 1. The hollow base has directed therethrough and into the head 2 a water conducting pipe 3 whi h, of course, may have its passage valve controlled, and which, at the portion thereof arranged approximately centrally in the head 2 has connected thereto a water conducting element which we will term a nipple and which is indicated by the numeral Al. The inner flat face of this nipple is provided with a round opening that is re ceived in an annular groove in a nut-like member 5 that is fixed on one end of a hollow shaft 6.
While we make no specific claim to the manner in which the hose is connected with the hollow shaft 6, it is to be understood that the joint therehetween is water proof. The hollow shaft 6 is fixed on the hub 7 of the reel 12. The hollow shaft is journaled through suitable bearings 9 that are fixedly secured in the head of the improvement. The hub C is provided with a. short pipe or tube 10 that communicates with the hollow shaft 6-, and to the projecting end of this tube there is fixed the inner end of the hose 11 which is wound upon itself in the bifurcated or cross sectionally U-shaped periphery of the reel 12.
Movable through a suitable opening, and guided along a flanged plate 13 in the top of the head 2 there is a spring influenced stem 14: whose outer end is provided with a head 15 and whose. inner end is widened and bifurcated, as at 16. This bifurcated end is in frichose 11' is unwound therefrom;
for the casing. Theniouthi? is'normally' tional contact with the peripheral edge of the reel 12 and serves as a stop to prevent the free movement of the reel, and likewise tends to hold the reel from movement when the The cylindrical head 2 of the'c asing. is provided with a substantially'rectangular extension 17 that surrounds an opening in one side thereof, and this opening provides the mouth closed by a hingeddoor '18, the said door being influenced to closed position through the medium of spring means 19 (Figure l). The nozzle end of the hosem-ay in itself provide a valve or the same may have attached "thereto a' hand operated valve of ordinary ally grooved drum 22. To the inner shoulder and at the widened end of the drum 22 there is'fixed one end of a strong cable 23. This cable is directed downwardly through the stand and has its lower endfixed to one end ofa=coil spring 24. The lower end of the said spring is fixed to atransverse plate or the like 25 in the lower portion of the base 1 of the stand. This construction provides an important feature of-the improvement; as the same equalizes the tension of the spring when theicable is brought over the different areas T of the spirally wound drum when the hose is unwound from the reel'or is permitted to wind thereon.
V The solid end of the shaft 6 has fixed thereon a pinion 26. This pinion is in mesh with 7 internal teeth on a segment 27. The straight and non-toothed edge of the segment is pivotally secured, as atv28, to a bracket or hearing that is supportedfrom aplate orbar 29 I Whose ends are 'fixed in the head of the stand.
- There is pivotally secured, as at 30, to the outer and flat face of the toothed segment. /27 one endof a piston rod. The piston rod is received througha packing box at one end of a-cylinder 31. The cylinder 31 has a closed end The closed endv of the cylinder .is
formed withan ear extension which is pivstand. The inner end of the piston rod carries a cup-like piston or plunger 34, and the" cylinder 31 is provided withfa longitudinal 9 by-pass 35 that permits of the'fluid 37 in thesaid cylinder passing to either side of the piston or plunger 34. A valve in the na- ''ture of a bolt having a pointed end is screwed hroughthe cylinder ina line with the groove 9 or by-pass'35,-and outer end ofthis valve oted, as at 32, to. a bracket 33 that isfiixed' 1 onthe inner periphery of the head of the" has a knurled head 36. This device provides a hydraulic check or brake. When the hose is drawn out by the turning of the reel the pinion 26 acting on the segmental or semicircular gear27 causesthe cup shaped piston 34 to move toward one .end of the cylinder not sufiicient friction to hold the reel from turning when-a pull is exerted upon the hose 11 to draw the same outwardly and to permit of. the reels being returned to wound position on the drum 22.
, It will'be noted by those skilled in the art to which the inventionrelates that with our improvement a hose can be readily unwound from the reel, checked bythe braking element'14 so that Water can be supplied to an ant nobileradiator or the like, released and wound by the spring 24 and checked in both its winding and unwinding actions and it is thought that further detailed description will not berequired insetting forth the construction and advantages of the device,
Obviously the base 1 of the casingmay be provided with a doorway and may contain therein suitable heating means for heating the water conducting pipe during wintry weather. 7 V I uHaving described the invention, we claim: 1; A hose reel for the purpose set forth, including a stand having a water conducting pipe, leading thereto,a shaft having a hollow portion to which the endof the pipe is connected, bearings for the shaft, a hub fixed .on the shaft and having a tubular portion .extending from the shaft and to which one end of a hose is designed to be connected, areel bodyiixed on the hub and having a peripheral bifurcated portion to receive the wound hose therein, springin'fluenced' stop means fornormally holding the reel from turning, said stand having an outlet provided with an opening into which the nozzle end of the hose is directed, guide means for said end of the hose, a spring influenced door for closing the. outlet, spring means for returning the reel to initial position-when the hose is wound therefrom, and a hydraulic brake actuated by'the 'turnmg of the reel for checking the same when returned by the springmeans to initial position.
