CROWN BLOCK Fil'ed Jan. 7, 1950 Patented Sept. 22, 1931 Bfi'RWELL-BOYKIN; JR, or BEAUMONT, TEXAS, AssiGnon'BY ivrEsNE Ass1an uinnrs, I T INTERNATIONAL-STACEY CORPORATION, 0F+COLUMBUS, onronconromxrron OF OHIO CROWN B Locx Application filed; January 7,l 1 93 O.' t Seria1 No. 419,028.
My invention relates to crown blocks such as are employed particularly on well derricks for use in the drilling of wells for oil,
gas, sulphur alidthe like. I I H V In the ordinary crown blocksuchfas is used on oil fieldderricks the cable,'whichis employed in raising 'andlowering the tools and pipe, is passed overa plurality of pulleys or sheaves on the said block and'theremay. be eight or more ofthese sheaves about which 7 c the cable is passed; Asthese sheaves are usu f invention a I a v a e I .tlcular econstr'uctlonand arrangement of my 5o;
ally mounted upon a shaft reinforced by the use of other adjacent shafts or supports upon the crown block, it is, dilficult to obtain free access to the sheaves for threadin'gthe cable over the same when the cable is changed or when a different'number of sheaves are to be employedin'the particular j ob at hand. The difiiculty ari's es in the fact that the adjacent transverse supports or rods upon the crown block interfere with movingthe cable into position upon-the sheaves.
It is an object of myinvention'to provide a crown blocki having the sheaves mounted upon a shaft which ispartially supported upon two adjacent rods or. shafts andto be enabled to move the adjacent shafts or rods out of connection with" the supporting pl ates so as to leavethe sheaves. open and unob- Vstructed when the cable to be j t ons Q,
I, desire to mount the supporting *rods at each side of the pulley shaft onblocks, which may be slidably engaged with theframeof the crown. block and thereby moved laterally out of theway'when thecableis beinginstalled upon the sheave.
' venient structure of supporting rod forfuse with my'crown blocka'ndtomake such rods freely movable in 'theflmanner stated.
, It is a further object to'provide a shaft upon which the sheaves are rotatable, which shaft is capable of rotative adjustment to present 7 different bearing surfaces thereon in the direction of the'loads sustained by the shaft." l l resides generally in the par} improved device, whichjwili moreclearly iljmderstood from the specificationwhichfol ows: y
Referring to the drawings herewithyFig, 1 isa top planyiew partly insection illus} 1 tra'tlng a crown block equipped with myin ventlonflQ Fig. 1 is a side elevationof said crown block, one of" the supporting rods being broken away for greater clearness. 7 Fig. is a broken end elevation of the de co v1ce;&' e H I-have shown'by invention as applied'to a crown block,"some parts of which are known to, be ,old. The crown block is made up of a pairof spaced beams 1 and 2, adaptedto be supported upon the derrick. These beams are spaced apartby transverse spacing mem; bers3, one ateach end of the frame. i Y
The sheaves or pulleys/ l of the""crown blockaremounted upon a central shaft 5 79 Said shaft is supported at its ends-inbear ing blocksincluding a lower member 61 rest- "ingiupon the upper side of the beam 1. Said member 6 has lateral ears 7," which are provided' with openings toreoeive V clamping 7-5 bolts- 8: The upper portion of the bearing iblock 9 also has laterally extending ears10 threngu;w11ich th clamping bolts, ,8n1ay project. It Will 'be seen that nuts 11 at the upper end andnuts 12 above the ears; 7 ,are 30 'adapted'to tighten the bearing blocks upon' the clamping bolt 8.
1 The' lower end of the clamping-bolt 8 is connected with a-yoke 13 which engages aroundthe upper end of the beam 1 as will be seen from Fig 3@ 'Thisflstruct'ure clearly illustrated in'my, prior Patent No; 1,588,872, issued June 15, ,19 26, and isno novel featureof the present invention; This yoke member is slidab le along the beam but i when the nuts 11 and 12 are tightly clamped upon the bolt'the yoke 13 is drawn tightly against the end of the beamand is thereby held rigidly in place. 7 i 2 The shaft 5is provided at each end with 4 a flange 15, which flange is notched at 16t0" receiyea latching member 17 vSaid latch comprises 'airarin of rigid material pivoted at itsouter end .upona pin 18: Between'its we fends itis-providedwith an opening to -e 1 o ceive a pin 19. Thus the latching arm 17 may be moved inwardly and locked in position by the insertion therethru of thepin 19.
.Whensaid pin is withdrawn, however, the
latchingarm 17 may be raised up to. allow a partial rotation of the shaft so that the ar-m' 17 may be dropped in to some other notch 16 in the flange 15. My shaft is provided with lubricant channels 20 therein and 22. These plates space the pulleys orsheaves slightly apart and also serve to support the shaft 5. The shaft extends through said plates and the plates areextended laterally beyondthe edges'ofthe pulleys, as shown at 23 in Fig. 2. The ends of the plates beyond the periphery of the pulleys are notched at 2 1 .to receive supporting rods 25..
The supporting rods 25 are of heavy construction and are formed to fit' within the notches 2st and as shown in Fig. 2 these shafts may be squared in cross section. It is understood that they may be of any desired shape, however. The ends of these rods are mounted in supporting blocks 26 mounted upon the beams 1 and 2 in a manner similar to thatof the bearing'shaft. The upper pol tion of the supporting blockis provided with lateral ears 27-, which have openings therein to receive the clamping bolts 28 adjustably mounted upon the beams by means of clamping yokes 29. The plates 22 are spaced apart at their endsupon the rods 25 by meansof spacing sleeves 30. Said sleeves fitlupon the shafts and are adapted to be held tightly between the plates by means of clamping nuts 31 at each end of the rod and adjacent the bearing support.
- The crown block assembly may behoused "if. desired in a sheet metal cover 32 shaped to fit over the upper ends of said sheaves and heldin place on the end plates 22- by means of bolts 33. I w
. Itwillbeseen that the shaft 5, which supports the sheaves A and thus sustains the load handledby the cable is reinforced by the supporting plates 4. Said plates assist in the supporting of the load by their connection with the rods 25 at eachend: thereof. When it is desired to obtain access to the pulleysfor changingithe cable the housing 32 may be removed and one o-rboth of the supporting rods 25 may moved laterally out of the way.: This is done by loosening the clamping bolts 28 at. the ends of the rods 25 and thus enabling said'blocks 26 to be slid alongthe tops of the beams. away fromthe. plates 23, as will be understood. from i Fig. 2. With the rods thus removed the V operator will have free access to thepul leys for any operation thereon which he may desire.
The supporting rods may be easily replaced crown block including supporting vI15 f said plates. r
on the sheaves, the shaft may be partially rotated to present another, side upwardly,
thus providing a smooth running block at all times.
What I claim as new is: 1'.'A crown block including spaced supporting beams, bearing blocks adjustable thereon, a shaft supported in said blocks,
