IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,634, dated August 1, 1876; application filed May 9, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA A. PRESTON, of New Troy, Berrien county, in the State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Plow, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side View of my improved plow, parts being broken away to show the construction; and Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, parts being broken away to show the construction.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved iron-beam plow which shall be light, and at the same time strong, and may be easily adjusted to take or leave land, and to run deep or shallow, as may be desired.
The invention consists in the plow-beam.
formed of the three bars connected together by bolts and washers; in the combination of the'plow-beam, the pivoted bolt, the slotted cross-bar, the clamping-bolt, the slotted uprights, the cross-bar, and the swiveled screws with each other, and, with the plow standard;
I and in the' combination of the set-screw with the lug formed upon the rear side of the standard, and with the beam, as hereinafter fully described.
'In the accompanying drawing, A is the mold-board, and B is the land-side, of a plow, which are bolted to the lower end of the standard O. In a slot in the upper end of the standard 0 is pivoted the head of a bolt, D, so that the said bolt may have a forward and backward movement, but cannot more laterally. The bolt D passes through a hole in the beam E F G, and has a nut screwed upon its upper end. The beam is formed of three bars, E F G, the forward ends of which are welded or otherwise firmly connected together. The upper bar G is made longer than the lower bar E, and the ends of the said bars are secured to the upper and lower sides of a short cross-bar, H, by a bolt and nut, I. This construction raises the middle part of the upper bar G above the middle part of the lower bar E, as shown in Fig. 1. The middlebar F passes along the under side of the upper bar G, and its rear end is bent downward, and is bolted to the lower bar E a little in front of the cross-bar H, as shown in Fig. 1. Upon the bolt D, between the bars E F, is placed a tubular washer, J, so that the three bars may be securely bound together by tightening the nut upon the bolt D. The bars F G are fastened together a little in front of the bolt D by a bolt or rivet, K. The three bars E F G are fastened together about midway between their forward ends and the bolt D by a bolt, I, and may be fastened together about midway between bolt D and their rear ends by another bolt, which is not shown in the drawings. These connecting-bolts have washers placed upon them between the bars E F G, to keep the said bars in their proper relative positions. The ends of the cross-bar H pass through slots in the uprights M, andare secured in said slots by nuts or other suitable means. The lower ends of the uprights M are attached to or formed upon a cross-bar, N, the ends of which are secured to the handles or to the mold-board and landside of the plow. The cross-bar H is slotted longitudinally to receive the bolt I, so that by loosening the said bolt the rear end of the beam may be moved laterally, to adjust the plow to take or leave land, according as it is desired to turn a wide or a narrow furrow. In the ends of the slot of the cross-bar H are swiveled two screws, 0, which pass through screw-holes in the end parts of the cross-bar N, so that by turning the said screws 0 up or down the rear end of the plow-beam will be raised or lowered, to cause the plow to run shallower or deeper in the ground, as may be desired. Upon the rear side of the upper part of the standard 0 is formed a lug, 0, through 2.
