HIRAM F. EVERITT, OF BENTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,041, dated August 25, 185'?.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, I-IIRAM F. EVERITT, of Benton, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of the machine, perpendicular to axis of reel. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, through axis of reel.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same part.
rIhe nat-ure of my invention consists in combining with a tinted concave and swinging, vertically moving rubber, a reel whose axis is parallel with the elements of the concave and whose arms constitute bearings of rollers, also parallel to the axis; so that the rubber at the commencement of its downward stroke, will cause the reel to move the clothes and shift their position with respect to the rubber, as will be set forth.'
In the drawing A is the body of the machine whose interior is concave, and is fluted as shown in Fig. l.
B is a reel whose shaft a rests in two pieces p, movable vertically in grooves in the end of the box; and secured in position by pins b passing through holes z'. This construction serves to adjust the reel vertically, and to remove it when desired.
The rollers C, constitute the longitudinal portions of the reel; they are supported by the end pieces l and revolve between them.
D is the rubber, swung from the lever E, having at its lower extremity a roller F. The reel bearings are kept down by the braces The operation of the combination is as follows: At the commencement of the downward stroke the rubberl has the position shown in Fig. l (black lines). And as it descends carries the reel around its axis a short distance, causing the lower rollers ofA the reel to drag the clothes in the direction ofthe arrow, a short distance, while the rubber assumes the position shown in red lines. The continuance of this action causes different portions of the clothes to be in succession presented to the action of the rubber; that portion previously acted upon being gradually carried by the reel to the opposite side of the machine. The operat-ion is then commenced on side Gr of reel by shifting braces f and inserting the rubber in the portion of the box denoted by letter Gr. The operation is then the same as above described; the clot-hes being carried by the reel in the opposite direction from that denoted by arrow. In this manner the operation is continued, the rubber acting alternately on opposite sides of the reel. The reel has the effect of submitting differentportions of the clothes, in succession to the action of the rubber, while the portions carried into the opposite compartment become filled with water and are in a favorable condition to receive the action of the rubber, when operation is commenced on that side of the reel.
I make no claim to any of the parts composing my machine, when separately considered, but
I claim- The combination as herein described of the adjustable reel, fluted concave and swinging rubber, constructed arranged and operating substantially as, and for the purposes specified. p
In testimony whereof, I havel hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
