Description

Feb. 7, 1933. J, NASMITH WIRE STITCHING MACHINE Filed Jan. 15, 1951 a 15 14 ya Patented Feb. 7, 1933 Um-EDI STATE PATENT JOHN IRVING NASMITH, or ELTHAM, ENGLAND, AssIe'noRT'ro 'vIcxnns-msrnonos" LIMITED, or WESTMINSTER, ENGLANDLVA- BRITISH CQMPANY 1;
i WIRE s'rrrcnme MACHINE Application filed. January 18, 1931,"sria1 Noi $08,456, and in great 'Brit ain nee'ember i,"1936;
This inventionrelates to wire stitchingm'a chines. Such machines areusually provided with suitably operated members for the pur-- pose of feeding a length of wire, for bending it into a staple and for driving the staple thus formed into the work to be stitched; The members are afforded their correct timed motions'by means of cams or otherii'neans driven from the driving shaft ofthemachine. By
suitable adjustment of the various motions of the members the correct actuation thereof according to a predetermined timed cycle is obtained. The present invention has exclu sive reference to wire stitching machines "in which the motion for feeding the wire for the stitches or staples is initially derived from a revolving feed cam. The feed" cam is adapted to actuate a two armed teed lever which imparts propermotion to mechanism which performs'thefunction of feedin a length of wire for the stitch or staple. Ailer the len gth of wire has been fed, a member known as the former bends the length of wire in conjunction with another member (gen e'rally referred to as the loop bar) into the form of a staple and supports the formed staple whilst being driveninto the work by th'eaction of a member known as the driver.
The object of the present invention is; to. improve the mechanical detailsof this type of machine and to overcome certain defectscommon to machines of this type at presentin The invention consists in a wire stitching machinecomprismg a two armed feed'l ever.
for feeding a length of wire, a rev olvin g feed cam for operating said feed lever, a former for forming the length of wire into a staple,
a a cam for operating said former and a driver to for driving the staple thus formed into the work, both arms of said feed lever and the said cam lying and moving in the same plane as that of the driver and former. The driver is actuated by means of a link connected to the feed cam and is preferably arranged so that the crank pin or the pinupon which the link is pivoted is totally enclosedand contained in the feed'cam. The driver is thus afl'orded a vertical reciprocating motion of suitable amplitude forthe purpose of driving the staple into the work. The-feed lever is oscillated by means ofthe feed cam which asabov-ementioned 'actuates the driver by means of the aforesaid linkfland the former is given its timed motion by means of a cam thepath ofwhich preferably lies entirely external to theifeedcam-r' ,By such adi'sposi tion of the parts the twisting forces set'up' ini actuating the members is reduced to a m1n1mum.- y I In order that the "said invention may be: clearlyunderstood and readily carriedinto efl'ect thesame will: now be niorefully .'described ,ith reference to the' accompa'nying' in which? I a "Figure 1 is a front elevation of one end of a wire stitching machine with the front cover of the machine removed so as to expose the V mechanism accordin'gtothe invention; f:
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional elevation taken'along the line 2+2 of Figure 1, and V Figure 3 is a horizontalsection' takenalong 1 the line 3-3 of Figure '1.
The driving shaft 4 of the machineiscarri vided with acampath 8with which co operates a roller'9 which is attached to andactu ates thejformer 10. The sha'ft 4 also carries the feed cam 11 whichmaybe separate from the cam plate 7 or as shownit may be formed,
integrally therewith; The driver 12 is adapt-j ed 'toreciprocate in guides provided on the former 10 and for the purpose of actuating the driver 12 a link 13 isprovidedconnected to'the upper end of the driver 12 and to the feed cam 11. The link13is' provided with f.
a'crank pin 1i] which: is totally enclosed and containedin the feed cam 11., The front face ofthe' feed'c'am llis arranged immediately adj acentto the inner face of the link B and v rontl face Y lies in -the' plane containingfthe of theldriverfll The feedlever 14 p; otedf at 15 upon the frame of the machine operates at one end againstlthe periphery onworking 1 face of the feed cam 1 11 The 'working fa'ce of a the" feed; cam is as shown arranged ver-f f tic ally above the driver and former. order ever, the feed cam may be formed as a double sided cam so as to operate the feed lever posi tively ibothkdirections. The former cam i groove 8 is provided in the camplate 7 .im'-- mediately behind the feed cam 11 and thus necessarily is such that the cam path 8 is entirely exterior to the periphery of the feed .Due totheabove described arrangement it,
will be observed from -F igure 3 that the three operated members, namely the feed lever, the
former and driver may be arranged in a single plane or in other words thetwoxarms of thefeed lever 14 may be so arranged that bothbf them li'e in thesame plane as-rthat of y the :driver and former.
