The main object of this invention is to provide a closure for filler necks or radiators and other tanks which is adapted for permanent attachment to types of necks now in extensive use and adapted to receive detachable closures or caps.
I A further object is to provide a closure having these advantages which may be easily secured and at the same time the attaching means is effectively concealed.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved closure with the cover open.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section on a line corresponding to line 22 of Figs. 1, 3 and 4.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section on line 44 of Figs. 2 and 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary inverted view of a slightly modified form or embodiment of my invention.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents a radiator and 2 the filling neck thereof. The neck 2 is provided with an inturned flange 3 providing a seat for the gasket 4:. This flange has downwardly facing cam portions 5 which are adapted to receive the attaching lugs of a cap. These cams are provided with stops 6 at corresponding ends thereof.
My improved closure comprises a body member 7 having a depending flange 8 em-- bracing the neck. This body portion is provided with a downwardly facing annular gasket seat 9 for the gasket 4 so that'the gasket is clamped between the closure and the neck, sealing the joint between them. The body member is provided with lugs 10 depending within the neck and having vertical slots 11 in their lower ends. These lugs also have shouldered bores 12 in which. the screws 13 are rotatively supported, the heads lying within the enlarged portions of the bores. Y
The screws 13 have threaded engagement with the clamping members 14: which are dis posed within the slots and supported against rotation by engagement with the walls of the slots. The screws are upset at their lower ends providing a retaining-flange 15 for the members, that is, these flanges serve as heads preventing the clamping members from fall ing oif the screws in the event they are turned too far in the releasing direction. The lower ends of the screws lie within the slots so that the clamping lugs are always properly positioned to engage the coacting part on the neck. v The cupped plugs 16 are driven through the enlarged upper ends of the bores 12'after the screws are manipulated by the clamping members thereby concealing the clamping members. v
In the embodiment illustrated the cover 17 is hinged to the upwardly projecting knuckle 18 on the body member by means of the pivot 19. The locking ring 20 rotatively mounted on the body member is provided with a notched inturned flange 21 adapted to engage the lug-like keeper 22' on the cover. These keepers close into recesses 23 provided the cover may be closed and rotation of the ring locks it in closed position.
The cover is provided with a resilient closure disk 25 which ismounted on a depending stud 26 on thecover, thereby supporting its outer portion in engagementwith the coacting'gasket '27 when the cover is closed. Q
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 the clamping member 28 is notched at 29 to engage the stop 6. This provides a positive locking, even though the clamping member should not be tightened sufliciently to fric tionally retain them in engagementwith the cams. However, such frictional engagement is easily accomplished as bymeans of the screw. The clamps maybe firmly drawn into engagement'with the neck, evento the 2? ing screws disposed in said bores insaid lugs V 5 tensive use, the locking means being concealed when the sealing plugs are employed,
so the closures are not easily removed even by persons having full knowledge of the structure. r
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V t
l. The combination with'a neck having an inturned flange provided with a gasket seat, of a closure body member having a depending flange embracing said neck and a downwardly facing annular gasket seat opposed to said seat on said neck, a gasket arranged between said seats, lugs on said body member depending within said neck, said lugs being slotted at their lower ends and having shouldered bores therein, clamping members dis posed in said slots in said lugs to engage the under side of said flange of said neck, clampwith their heads in the enlargements thereof and having threaded engagement with said clamping members whereby the clamping members may be drawn into clamping engagement with the neck, cupped closure plugs receiving the heads of said screws and filling the upper ends of said boresand disposed below the tops of the bores, and a cover mounted on said closure body member.
2. The combination with a neck having an inturned flange, a closure body member, a gasket arranged between said neckvand body member, lugs on said body member depending within said neck, said lugs being slotted at their lower ends and having shouldered bores therein, clamping members disposed in said slots in said lugs to engage the under side of said flange of said neck, clamping screws disposed in said bores in saidlugs with their heads in the enlargements thereof and having members whereby the clamping members may be drawn into clamping engagement with the neck, cupped closure plugs filling the upper ends of said bores and concealing said screws, the plugs being disposed below the top of the bores, and a cover on said closure body member. 7
4:. A filler neck closure provided with a shouldered bore, a clamping member screw disposed insaid bore with its head in the en larged portion thereof, and a cupped closure plug receiving the head of said screw and filling-the upper enlarged end of said bore and terminating below the top of the bore for preventing access to said screw head.
