Description

Patented Dec. 13, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLAUDE DIAMOND, OF LEAMINGTON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR T0 GOUBTAULD'S LIMITED,
OF LONDON, ENGLAND MANUFACTURE AND PRODUCTION OF ARTIFICIAL THREADS AND FILAMENTS AND PRODUCTS THEREFROM No Drawing. Application filed March 10, 1931, Serial No. 521,611, and in Great Britain February 3, 1931.
My invention relates to a new type of artificial yarn consisting of an organic ester of cellulose together with a small proportion of an Organic acid ester of a saccharide which is soluble in organic solvents such as acetone. The artificial threads according to my invention can be obtained by spinning by means of the dry spinning process a solution containing an organic ester of cellulose and a small proportion of the said ester in an organic solvent. As an example of an organic acid ester of a saccharide which is used according to my invention 1 may mention glucose pentacetate.
The new threads according to my invention readily-lose a considerable proportion of their lustre and assume a dull or matt appearance when treated with a soap solution at or near the boiling point. This delustring is more pronounced and more easily obtained than when boiling with soap solution yarn produced from a cellulose ester solution containing no such organic ester of a saccheride.
The following example shows how my invention can be carried out l 24 parts of cellulose acetate containing 54 per cent of acetyl calculated as acetic acid and 1 part of glucose pentacetate are dissolved in 72 parts at acetone and 3-parts of water and artificial threads of 3.5 deniers per filament are produced from the solution by the dry spinning process. The threads obtained may then be woven into cloth which will be found to possess approximately the same lustre as a similar artificial silk cloth which has been produced without the addition of glucose pentacetate. If the cloth is then immersed for half an hour in a 1.5 per cent green olive oil soap solution at the boiling point and be finally washed and dried, the cloth will be found to have a dull or matt appearance.
What I claim is 1. An artificial thread consisting of an organic ester of cellulose and a small proportion of glucose pentacetate.
2. An artificial thread consisting of cellulose acetate and a small proportion of glucose pentacetate.
3. The process of producing matt threads by treatmg with a soap solution at or near the boiling point threads consisting of cellulose acetate and a small proportion of glucose pentacetate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CLAUDE DIAMOND.
