Filed Nov. 6. 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 wlTNEsSEs INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 10, 1929 UNTED STATES HELEN B. YOUNG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHAWL COAT Application filed November This invention relates to garments, and particularly to an improved shawl coat, the object being to provide a childs coat by folding a shawl or other substantially rectangnlar piece of fabric and securing the folded parts together, Aso that they will remain in position to act as sleeves, a body and a muffler.
Another object of the invention is to form a shawl without. cutting the shawl and in such a manner that the coatv may be spread out and folded Without materially creasing thesame.
In the accompanying drawing,-
Figure 1 is a front view of a shawl disclosing an embodiment of the invention, the' same being illustrated on a figure indicated by dotted lines;
Figure 2 is a three-fourths rear perspective view of the coat 'shown in Figure 1, the
same being illustrated on a figure indicated by dotted lines;
Figure 3 is a rear view of the coat shown in Figure 1, the same being shown spread out;
Figure 4 is a figure similar to Figure 3 but showing the opposite side of the garment;
Figure 5 is a View similar to Figure 3, but with the fringe removed and the sleeve portions lying substantially fiat;
Figure 6 is a sectional view through Figure 4 on the line 6 6;
Figure 7 is a sectional view through Figure 4 on the line 7 7;
Figure 8 is a plan view on a greatly reduced scale of the shawl used in making the garment illustrated in Figures 1 to 7 inclusive.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates a shawl provided with fringe 2 and 3. This shawl, as shown in Figure 8, is rectangular and is made in one piece. In forming the completed garment, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the shawl l is folded along line 4, as shown in Figure 5, so as to form what may be termed a body 5 having an overlapping portion 6. The overlapping portion 6 by reason of the lines of stitching 7 and 8 merge into sleeves 9 and 10. The shawl 1 is also folded along the line 11 and the lining member 12 is stitched to the 6, 1928. Serial No. 317,570.
body 5 at 13 which is on line 11 or very near this line. The upper edge of the lining 12 is stitched to the overlapping portion G along the line 14 which eXtends'for the full length of the shawl, as shown in Figure 5. When forming the lining 12 the same is constructed with cut-out portions 15 and 16 arranged adjacent the sleeves 9 and 10. TWhen the garment is in use the lining 12 acts as a support for the body 5, so that it will not drop down but will maintain the folded-over edge 4. The portion of the garment between line 14 and the upper edge, as shown in Figure 5, forms a scarf 17 which fits around the neck and extends downwardly to near the bottom o-f body 5 when the garment is in use, as shown in Figure 1. Suitable snapA fasteners 18 are provided in order to connect the parts together when in use, as shown in Figure r1. If desired, other forms of disengageable securing means may be used instead of Snap fasteners, and in addition preferably strips of ribbon 19 are used at certain points to tie the parts in operative position and also to more or less beautify the garment. The fringed ends 2 and 3, as shown in Figure 8, form the fringe on the bottom of the scarf 17 and also form the fringe on the foldedback portions of the sleeve 9, said folded back portions presenting cuff formations 20,- as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. In the formation of the completed coat as shown in Figure 1, the shawl is not cut, or if the garment is made from some other material than a shawl the material is not cut but merely folded, as set forth, and stitched together, and also the lining l2 and other parts shown are stitched in place. When the garment is in use it covers the body of the child in the usual manner and presents a pleasing appearance. When not in use the garment will be spread out, as shown in Figures 3 to 5 inclusive and then folded without injury. Also, by reason lof the formation set forth the garment may be readily cleaned and if wet may be readily dried.
What I claim is f 1. A shawl coat, comprising a body structure formed from a single shawl folded to presenta looped formation slight-ly to one side of the center of the shawl and also to present a fold at one edge, said last-mem tioned fold forming a scarf, lines of stitching coaetingv with the irst-mentioned fold 5 for causing part of the first-mentioned fold to form sleeves, a member arranged interiorly of the garment for supporting the first-mentioned fold, and disengageable fastening means for connecting opposite ends lo of the garment together When the garment is 1n use.
2. A shawl coat, formed from a rectangular shawl having a fringe at each end, said shawl being folded longitudinally to form a coat body and an upper portion, said upper portion being folded longitudinally to pron vide at one lend a scarf, a lining having notches therein, said lining being secured to said body at the folds and also to the edge of said scarf, and a line of stitching adjacent each -end of the garment for causing part ,of the folded portion thereof to present sleeves.
3. A shawl coat, including in its construe tion a one-piece body structure formed to present an encircling body member, a neck scarf and sleeves, a line of stitching for each sleeve for holding the sleeves permanently in a proper formation, a lining member having notches opposite said sleeves, and means for disengageably connecting the ends of the garment together when Vin use.
Signed at NeW York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 25th day of October, A. D. 1928.
