BAYlJNET-JOINT LADLE STOPPER.
Application filed November 20, 1928. Serial No. 320.519.
The present invention is supplemental to that o'imy Patent No. 1,698,876 and, application #QTQHT) liled llflay 253, 1925i, andcovers another type of stopper head than either oi them.
The invention relates lo improven'ients in stoppers for bottom pour ladies used to contain molten metal.
The prii'icipal object of. the present invention is to provide a stopper for use In conlrolling the flow oi? molten metal From a ladle which will not be damaged in slitting to the stopper rod or when unusual strain is put upon it.
llsually the closed end, lnryonet joint ladle stopper is attached to the red by turnii'ur it so that the transverse metal pin engages the horizontal slot in the stopper. The sleeves a re adjusted on the rod with suliicient slurry between and held down firmly by l: .teningjg means at the upper end of the rod. 'llhc force exerted tor adjusting the sleeves may draw the pin into the solitcr cl ay, or clay and graphit et ti stopper to the great danger ol? seriously damaging it with resultant tailurc during); the pouring operation.
It a skull oi eh illed metal has formed in the metal in, the ladle, the extra liorce required to release and lift the stopper may cause the metal pin to he drawn through the clay or clay and graphite above the slot, resulting in the loss oi. the stepper and thereby all con trol of the metal in the ladle.
l/Vhcn, as is sometimes necessary, (and lircquently when not) the stopper is pounded down against the nozzle a similar shearing may result and the stopper head he lost.
lily invention. comprises the improvements to be presently described and in ally claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ladle stopper rod assembly.
Fig. 2 is a top elevation of the stopper head.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section through the stopper head, and
Fig. at is a detail. of an insert channel.
listening to Fig. 1 the ladle stopper rod assembly consists of a rod 1. having a pin 2 passing through the lower end thereof. At the upper end of rod 1 are mounted nut 10 and Washer 3 which form a fastening means for a plurality oi sleeves 4 which are mounted on and which surround rod 1. On the lower end of rod 1. is mounted stopper head 5 which has hole (3 through the upper end there of to admit rod 1. Partnuty of the axial length 01'' hole (5 are horizontalv grooves 7 into which are fitted channel inserts 9. The grooves 7 are shaped like segments of circh s. Uu. opposite, sides of hole 6 are termed vertical slots 8 which give access each to one end of one of the grooves 7. h lounted in the opposite ends oil? grooves *4 from the slots 8 are channeled inserts 9 made of metallic or suit able material having a high melting; point. The opening 6 is flared at its upper end to 1 rovide ready entrance to red 1f ljin 2 descends through slots 8 and rod 1 is then to tated to cause pin 2 to rest against the ends of slots 7 in contact with channels 9. Thus it will be seen that channels 9, take the strain when rod 1 is moved in a vertical (lllOGtlOll. T his results in a much. stronger stopper head.
lit will be obvious to theseslcilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement, and in n'latters of mere lorm without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited to such i'i'iatters or otherwise than the prior art and the appended claims may require.
I claim:
1. A ladle stopper head of refractory material provided with a closed end and h avinp; a recess and two channel members anchored in the recess substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A ladle stopper rod assembly comprising in combination, a metallic rod, a pin through one end thereof, a stopper head ot refractory material h avine' bayonet slots therein adapted to receive the pin on said. rod and channel members mounted at the inner ends of said bayonet slots.
A. ladle stopper head of refractory ma terial having an axially arranged concavity provided with straight, confronting, axially disposed open slots and with opposed grooves ci rcumterentially arranged, each 011? the form of a segment of a circle, and each. connected at one end with one oli said slots and each provided near its other end and a continuation thereof with a ground insert of the form of a segment of a circle.
CHARLES C. BACON.
