Description
June 25, 1929. I CROWELL 1,718,277
' BISCUIT Box Original Filed July 20. 1927 K110705019 ll Attomgy In'benmr Patented June 25, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- BISCUIT Box.
Application filed July 20, 1927, Serial No. 207,179. Renewed April 4, 1929.
The object of my said invention is the provision of a biscuit box or analogous container characterized by a false bottom, and peculiar and advantageous means whereby the false bottom may be maintained at various heights in the box with a view to making the box or container appear as full as long as there are biscuits, cakes or the like in the box or container, this with a view to preventing a customer from thinking that because of biscuits or cake being near the bottom of a box or container, the biscuits or cake are not fresh. My improvement is also advantageous because it will enable a merchant to distin- 1 guish the poor selling brand and in that way avoid the buying of any brand of cakes, biscuits or the like save those which enjoy a quick sale.
A further object of'my invention is the provision of my improvement in an embodiment that is applicable to and removable from conventional boxes or containers, this in order that my improvement may be employed successively in a number of boxes or containers, if such use of the invention is deemed expedient.
Another object of the invention is the provision of my improvement in an extremely simple and inexpensive construction which,
if deemed expedient, may be discarded after a box has been fully discharged of its contents. I would have it'understood, however that when deemed expedient, my improvement may be employed for an indefinite period of time in a single box or container, and this during the repeated filling and discharging of the box or container.
Other objects and practical advantages of my invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of the specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a cake box or container equipped with the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken in a plane at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective of one of hanger attachments comprised in my improvement.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawing.
' I illustrate in Figures 1 and 2 an ordinary box body 1, and a cover 2 therefor. The said box body and cover are not of my in vention, and at this point I would have it understood that my improvement is adapted to be applied to and used in any type of box or container to which the improvement is applicable.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention I employ sheet metal hanger attachments 3 of the inverted U-shape best illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, and which are adapted to be arranged on opposite walls of the box body'l in the relation illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The said attachments 3 are provided at their inner sides with spring tongues 4, preferably struck from the innerskirts of the attachment, as appears clearly in Figure 3.
My improvement also comprises a false bottom or platform 5. Within the purview of my invention the said false bottom or platform 5 may be of any material appropriate to the purpose of the invention, though for the sake of cheapness and lightness, the said false bottom or platform 5 may be formed of compressed pulp, fiber or the like. The said false bottom or platform 5 is provided with opposite upstanding flanges 6, and stafiled or otherwise connected tothe said anges 6, Figures 1 and 2, are flexible tapes or straps 7. The said flexible tapes or straps 7 are adapted to be engaged with and pressed and held by the tongues 4 after the manner illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, and inasmuch as the tapes or straps 7 may be expeditiously and easily engaged with and disengaged from the tongues 4, it follows that the tapes or straps 7 may be fastened at various points in their length to the attachments 3 so as to support the false bottom or platform 5 at 95 various points in the height of the box as {)he biscuits or cakes are removed from the In the practical use of my improvement, the false bottom or platform 5 is initially 100 arranged against the bottom of the box body 1, and the box is packed with biscuits or cakes in conventional manner.
Then when a layer or thickness of cakes is removed from the box body at the top 5 thereof, the tapes or straps 7 are disengaged from the tongues 4 and the false bottom or platform 5 is then through the medium of the tapes or straps 7 raised to move the uppermost biscuits or cakes to a point'substan- 110 tially flush with the upper edge of the walls of the body 1, whereupon the tapes of straps are engaged with the tongues 4 and thereby fastened to the attachments 3 so that the cakes will be maintained in the raised position indicated. This operation is repeated until the supply of biscuits or cakes in the box is depleted, and by virtue of the said practice, it will be understood that the box will always appear to a prospective purchaser as being fullor substantially full and the said prospectivepurchaser will be prevented from acquiring the idea, that the biscuits or cakes in the box are old stock.
While I show the box body 1 as having a transparent panel 8, Figure 1, I would have it understood that the said transparent panel 8 has nothing to do with my invention, and therefore the panel 8, in the discretion of the manufacturer may be employed or may be altogether omitted Without affecting my invention.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that while simple and inexpensive in construction and easily applied and used, my improvement constitutes an important adjunct for cake and biscuit containers.
v I have explicitly described the preferred embodiment of m invention in order to impart an exact un erstanding of the said embodiment in all its details. I donot desire, however, to be understood as limiting myself to the precise structure disclosed, my invention being defined by my appended claims within the scope of which modifications may be made without departure from my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what false bottom or platform and engaged with said fasteners; the said fasteners being in the form of spring clasp'ing tongues, and the said hangers being in the form of flexible tapes or straps engageable with said tongues and adapted to be clasped and held by the tongues at various points in the length of the tapes or straps.
2. In combination, a box or container body, attachments extraneous to the body or container arranged on opposite portions of said body in straddling relation and having at their inner sides spring tongues, a false bottom or platform movable Vertically in the body and having opposite upstanding flanges, and flexible tapes or straps connected to said flanges and adapted to be engaged with and clasped by the saidspring tongues.
3. Means for the purpose described and adapted for use in association with a box body, comprising attachments of inverted U- shape adapted to be mounted on opposite portions of a box-body and having at their inner sides spring clasping tongues, a false bottom or platform, and flexible tapes or straps connected to said false bottom or platform and adapted to be engaged with and clasped by said tongues.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
KENNETH H. CROWELL.
