The object of my invent-ion is to provide a pump. adapted for insertion into a receptacle containing grease for dispensing o'r discharging a predetermined Volume of the greases when the plunger of the pump is operated. The receptacle may be a grease container or package, the pump being equipped with a suitable cover for closing the top of the container temporarily and being removable to allow the application of the pump to other containers. 7 r
A further object is to provide a pump device adapted for mounting in a tank or container, without being permanently attached thereto, so that it may be readily removed at any time for cleaning or other purposes. A
A further object is to provide apump device which may be utilized not only for delivering a stated quantity of lubricant from the container or tank, but may also be used for withdrawing a lubricant from a crank case or for injecting a liquid, such as kerosene, into a crank case or gearing. The invention consists generally in Various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. In the drawing, 2 represents the can or grease container, usuall made of sheet metal and having a suite le bail 3 for convenience in moving it from place to place. The top of the container is open and has a bead 4 extending around the edge. 5 is a sheet metal cover, having a flange 6 fitting within thetop of the container and forming a tight joint with the walls thereof, the flange being sufliciently flexible to yield and accommodate itself to the inner surface of the container walls. The top of the cover has an annular flange 7 thereon that is seated on the bead at the top of the container and a plunger 14 has walls. A bar 8, preferably of metal, is fitted to the top of the cover and Secured thereto by suitable means, such as a bolt 9, and said bar has depending heads 10 at the ends thereof on the underside of which cams 11 are providedto engage the under side of the bead 4, and secured to the heads 10 by suitable means,-such as rivets 12.. The cams have inclined surfaces to engage the bead 4 so that when the cams are rotated on their supporting rivets, the bearing of the surfaces on the bead will operate to draw the cover downwardly and seat it 'firmly on the top of the container. v
A pump barrel 13 has its upper endv seated against the underside of the bar 8 a rod 15 which projects through a hole in said bar and is provided at its upper end with a suitable handle 16 by means of whichthe plunger may be raised and lowered in the barrel. The lower end of the barrel is mounted in a head 17. In this head is a chamber18 which communicates with the open lower'end of the barrel and with the interior of the container through a port 19. A pipe 20 is connected with the chamber 18 and projectsup through the bar 8 and is connected to a hose 21 having a suitable discharge nozzle 22. Avalve 23 preferably of the gate type is arranged to slide in guides in t e head 17 toclose or open the port- 19 and a rod 24 projects up through the bar 8 in position to be grasped V by the user of the device for operating the valve and opening or closing the passage from the chamber 18 to the interior of the container.
A stop 30 is slidably arranged on the piston rod 15, and has a set screw adapted for setting the stop at any desired position on the rod, to limit downward movement of the plunger by engagement with the lid or closure 5. By this construct-ion, accurately regulated quantities, :or grease can be forced from the elongated delivery pipe, and a quantity as small as three drams can be delivered. It will be noted that when the valve 23 is closed and the stop set in a predetermined manner, only that amount of liquid can'be forced from the cylinder according to the disposition of the stop 30.
By means of this gate valve, I can adapt the device for different purposes. When the gate is open, as shown in Figure 2, and the plunger raised to the position in said figure,
the pump barrel will be filled with the coin paratively thick lubricant and then, upon closing the gate valve, a down stroke ofthe plunger will fill the pipe 20 and the hose 21 connected therewith to the nozzle at the end of the hose. Then the valve may be opened again and a fresh supply of the thick viscous lubricant drawn in from the container upon the upward movement of the plunger. This upward movement, however, willnot' disturb that body of the lubricant which has been forced into the pipe 20 and the hose 21 owing to its frictional contact with the walls of the pipe'and hose and consequently a downward stroke of the plunger when the pipe and hose vare filled will have the effect of immediately discharging a quantity of lubricant at the nozzle corresponding to the quantity drawn into the barrel on the up stroke of the plunger, a
slightstroke'of the plunger being immediately transmitted through the body of the lubricant to effect an instant discharge at the nozzle. "When the device is in use, this presence of the lubricant in the pipe 20 and hose 21 will be a normal condition. If the user wishes to remove lubrlcant from a gear casehe can insert the nozzle of the. hoseinto the case, close the'gate valve in the pump and manipulate the plunger to suck the thick heavy lubricant backwardly in the pipe and hose'and creating a suction at the nozzle and draw the heavy lubricant from the gear caseinto the hose, and if desired, he can draw kerosene or other liquid into the hose in the same way and then eject it into a gearing or any other desired point, which perhaps can not be conveniently "reached with an ordinary means for discharging kerosene. I thus am not only able to draw the contents of the container into the pump and discharge it, as desired, but I may, by closing the passage between the pump and the container, utilize the'pump as a means for drawing a lubricant, such-as grease, or a liquid, such as kerosene, into the hose for discharge at some other point, the gate valve making a con- 'venient and durable means for effectively cutting off the passage between the interior of the container and the pump.
' It will be understood that this device is used; for handling a thick heavy lubricant or a grease which, under normal conditions,
will not flow but'will move through the barrel and the discharge hose when the plunger is reciprocated. When the valve is open and the plunger is raised the grease will move through the'intake port to the barrel and upon closing the valve, the grease on the down stroke will be forced outwardly into the discharge connection, comprising in this particular case the pipe 20 and thehose forming a continuation thereof. When the discharge connection has been filled with .there is less resistance to the movement of the grease into the barrel through the valve portithan there would be to its return through the holes and pipe 20 because of the frictional engagement of the grease with the walls of the pipe and the hose. Therefore, when the pipe and hose have been filled Inlay draw in'a' charge of grease from the container on the upstroke of the plunger and on the down stroke ejecta corresponding volume from the nozzle. If the valve-is closed and the plunger raised, the grease in the discharge connection will be drawn backwardly in the hosefor a distance, creating a vacuum and a suction at the nozzle so that when the nozzle is inserted into a crankcase or other receptacle thelubricant therein will enter the nozzle" and the vdischarge end of the hose and in that way may be collected and removed from the crankcase.
To use the apparatus, the pump is fitted into the top of the container, containing a quantity of grease, and when the pump plunger is raised to the upper end of the barrel, a vacuum created therein, it being understood, of course, that the plunger rod chamber 18 and the interior of the container.
The descent of the plunger will force the grease up through the pipe 20 to the hose and dischargenozzle. The gate can then be opened and the pump barrel will be filled when the plunger is raised to repeat the operation; V
This device is extremely simple in operation, can be easily. and quickly mounted on the container, and has no parts which are liable to become clogged or inoperative and delay orprevent the use and operation of the device.
Whenever desired, the apparatus may be easily and'quickly detached from the container and removed for cleaning purposes or for attachment to another container or tank;

2. A device of the class described comprising a coupling providing a passage, a pump including a cylinder attached to the coupling and communicating at one end with the passage thereof, said coupling having a slot formed by sawing and traversing said passage, an element as a gate valve slidable in said slot, and having means cooperable with said coupling for guiding it, a delivery conduit as a continuation of the passage of the coupling, and of a calibre to substantially resist the flow of heavy fluid.
3. A device of the class described comprising a coupling providing a passage, a pump including a cylinder attached to the coupling and communicating at one end with the passage thereof, said coupling having a slot traversing said passage, an element as a gate valve slidable in said slot, and having means cooperable with said coupling for guiding it, a delivery conduit as a continuation of the passage of the coupling and of a calibre to substantially resist the flow of heavy fluid, said delivery conduit lyingat one side of the cylinder and said valve at the opposite side.
4. A device of the class described comprising a coupling providing a passage, a. pump including a cylinder attached to the coupling and communicating at one end with the passage thereof, said coupling having a slot traversing said passage, an element as a gate valve slidable in said slot, and having means cooperable with said coupling for guiding it, a delivery conduit as a continuation of the passage of the coupling and of a calibre to substantially resist the flow of heavy fluid, said delivery conduit lying at one side of the cylinder and said valve at the opposite side, and said valve having means for operating it, which means is substantially parallel with the pump cylinder.
