PATENT OFFICE.
TOHN I. YOUNG, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB '10 AMERICAN" CAN COHPAN Y,
OF NEW YORK, 11'. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW 1 mnsarmmesrarr con'ramna.
Application filed larch a0, 1922. Serial m'uaoss.
This invention relates to tearing strip containers, and has for a principal object the provision of a tongue or extension of the tearing strip which is formed to permit 1t to be grasped by the hand for tearin away the strip without the employment 0 a key orother opening device.
An important object of the invention is the provision of a keyless tearing strip container in which the opening tongue is so formed as to prevent its cutting or otherwise injuring the hand of the user, and to permit its being readily grasped and held during the opening operation. 7
A further object of the invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive opening device which requires no more tin plate than the ordinary key-opening tongue and which, being a part of the can itself, can not become lost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be a parent as it is better understood from t e following description, which, taken in connection with the accomanying drawings, discloses a preferred emodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail'view of a portion of a bod blank and the opening tongue prior to t eir being brought'to final form; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the tongue or thumb piece in its final form.
For the purpose of illustration, I have shown on the drawings a container body 11 having a bottom end 12 and a. cover 13 secured thereto in the usual or any preferred manner, said body having its side edges or flanges joined in a lock and lap side beam" 14. Extending circumferentially about the upper part of the container is a tearing strip 15 set off by score lines 16 and 17 and having an extension 18 overlying the can body beyond the side seam 14. 'lhe body of this strip is provided with herringbone scores as indicated at 20, whereby a-tear running 1nwardly from said boundary score lines will be directed back thereto and severing of the strip prevented. The body blank 19 is cut to provide lap portions 21 and 22 above and below the tearin strip, and lock portions 23 and 24, the ormer extending substantially the length of the body and the latter forming a. small lug above the tearing strip. A notch 25 is provided' immediately beneath the lower score line 16 and a slit 26 separates the extension 18 from the lock portion '24 so that the strip may be readily torn away by pulling thereon. a
The extension 18 is considerably enlarged and is rogunded in at 27/and 28 to the width of the strip. It is provided with flanges 29 and 31 which are folded or rolled over,
as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, to cause the sharp edges to be turned inwardly and to provide a thumb-engagin portion '32 having rounded margins o bead-like form which may be'readily grasped for tearing away the strip. By this or equivalent formation of the edge of the tongues the sharp edge is guarded .by the tongue itself so that it can not cut the thumb or fingers in the act of pulling away the strip. It will be apof its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it Will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all ofits material advantages,
the form hereinbefore described being morely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
In a container the body oi" which is formed with a tearing strip, the end of said strip projecting to form a finger hold for tearing away. the strip, said finger hold having its upper and lower edges formed into curls which are concave on their inner sides to afford a secure and protected grip for the thumb in pulling away the tearing strip.
