Description

April 1931- G. STERNBERG 1,799,994
BOX WITH REMOVABLE LID Filed April 7, 1930 Fig3 b g INVENTOR 910i! Samb BY 7 A TTQR N EY Patented Apr. 7, 1931 UNITED STATES GEORG STEENBERG, F BERLIN, GERMANY BOX WITH REMOVABLE LID Application filed April 7, 1930, Serial No. 442,199, and in Germany February 24, 1930.
This invention relates to boxes with removable lids for preserving and presenting objects of any kind, in particular cigars and cigarettes.
According to the invention the bottom of the box is provided with an opening over which a movable bottom is inserted into the box carrying the objects to be preserved or presented. The removable lid of the box is furthermore provided with an upstanding piece or an abutment which can be brought into engagement with the said opening raising thereby the said movable bottom together with the inserted objects which will be uplifted above the upper edges of the box. The movable bottom carrying the cigarettes or other objects, is preferably divided by means of vertical walls into several compartments each containing objects of a difi'erent kind, for instance cigarettes of a different sort. The abutment which raises the movable bottom when the box is inserted on top of the lid, has suitably such a shape that it can be also used as a handle for lifting the lid, when the latter is inserted on top of the box.
A box according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing'by way of example only, in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of the box.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. 1, the lid having been removed from the box.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation corresponding to Fig. 1 and showing the box ready for 33 use.
Referring to the drawings, a is a cylindrical box with an open top portion which can be closed by a lid 1). The box it contains a movable bottom 0 provided with two inter- 40 secting vertical walls (Z and carrying the ob jects to be preserved, these objects being cigarettes e in the illustrated example. The height of the box a is such, that the tops of the cigarettes 6 lie approximately near its 1 upper edge.
The bottom of the box a is provided with an opening f and the lid 6 has on its upper surface a corresponding abutment g which is also used as a handle while lifting or putting on the lid Z).
When it is desired to present or to remove the objects installed in the box, the lid (2 is taken off and the box a is put on top of the lid in such a way that the handle or the abutment 9 engages the opening f on the lower face of the box. The movable bottom 0 carrying the cigarettes 6 will be raised then by means of the abutment g of the lid 1) so that the cigarettes 6 will project beyond the upper edge of the box a and will be able to be conveniently taken out of the box, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The lid .7) acts in this position as a support for the box a which stands on top of it.
The invention is of course not limited to the embodiment illustrated; it is in particular not necessary for the box to be of cylindrical shape, it can on the contrary have any other convenient shape and may not only be used for keeping cigarettes but also for any other objects, for instance cigars, cigarillos, toothpicks, straws, paper napkins etc. The box can also be conveniently used for toilet articles, for instance for keeping powder-puffs, lipsticks and similar objects. The removable lid can also be provided with several abutments of any shape and dimensions, engaging with corresponding openings on the bottom of the box.
I claim 1. A box with a removable lid for preserving and presenting objects of any kind and particularly cigars or cigarettes, characterized by the bottom of the box being provided with an opening, amovable bottom carrying the objects to be preserved or presented, be ing inserted into the box and an upwardly projecting abutment being provided on the lid and adapted to engage the said hole when the box has been put on the top of the lid whereby raising the said movable bottom so that the objects project beyond the upper edge of the box.
2. A box with a removable lid for preserving and presenting objects of any kind and particularly cigars or cigarettes, according to claim 1, wherein the abutment on the lid is of such a shape as to be used as a handle while taking OE and putting on the lid.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature.
GE( )RG STERNBERG.
