Description

Patented Jan. 6, 1931 UNITED STATES HAROLD D. SCHRIER, OF KALAMAZOO, -MICHIGAN- COLLAPSIBLE BOX OR CONTAINER Application filed November 9, 1925. Serial No. 318,126. I
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved collapsible box or (ontainer which may be quickly set up and when set up is strong and rigid.
A further object is to provide a box of this character with a handle.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined m and pointed'out in the claims.
' A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved 5 box completely set up.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view.
Fig. 4 is a detail section on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is formed.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan view of a modified form or embodiment of my invention.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the referred embodiment of my invention as il ustrated, my improved box or container is hexagonal, the side wall panels 1, 2-, 3, 4, 5 and 6 being aligned in the blank, the panel 6 having a. glue or sealing flap 7 which is adapted to overlap the panel 1 and is glued or stitched thereto.
The panels 1 and 4 which are diametrically opposite in the set up box have bottom flaps 8 and 9 respectively, these flaps being of such length that they overlap as shown in Fig. 3. The flap 9 being the inner flap has longitudinal slits 10 therein while the flap 8 has transversely disposed tongues 11 engageable in these slits 10, thereby locking the bottom flaps in closed position. These panels 1 and 4 have top flaps 12, these top fiaps being duplicates and complementary, that is, they complement each other in forming the top.
The top and bottom flaps are outwardly expanded so that when closed their side edges 13 are in supporting engagement with the 6 adjacent wall panels.
panels; a pair of the diametrically opposite The wall panels 2, 3, and (j are provided with closure flaps 151 at each end terminating in tongues 15 which are insertedin slits 16 disposed in parallel relation to the side edges 13 of the topand bottom'fiaps.
The top flaps have handle extensions 17 provided with registeringhand openings 18, these extensions being adapted to lieside by side at substantially right angles to the top flaps when the box is closed. The overlapping closure flaps efiectivelyretain the top and bottom flaps in closed position.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the closure flaps 14 are provided with hooked tongues19 engaging in the slits 16. .While these are somewhat more secure than the form shown in theother figures of the drawing, they are more diflicult to engage, and disengage and the, box when provided. with straight tongues is very satisfactory.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patentyis:
1. A hexagonal box comprising side wall panels, a pair of diametrically opposite panels having outwardly expanding bottom flaps with overlapping portions, the inner of said bottom flaps having spaced longitudinal slits and the outer of said bottom flaps having transversely disposed tongues engageable in said slits, suchside panels also having outwardly expanding complementary top flaps terminating in handle extensions disposed side by side and having registering hand openings therein, said top and bottom flaps having slits disposed in parallel relation to their side edges, the remainin panels having top and bottom closure aps foldable over the side edges of said top and bottom flaps and terminating in tongues engageable in said slits in said top and bottom flaps whereby the top and bottom flaps are retained and supported in closed position.
2. A polygonal box comprising side wall panels having bottom flaps with overlapping ortions, the inner of said bottom flaps havlng spaced longitudinal slits and the outer of said bottom flaps having transversely disposed tongues engageable in said silts, such side panels also having complementary top flaps terminatin in handle extensions disposed side by side and having registering hand openings therein, said top and bottom 5 flaps having slits disposed in parallel relation to their side edges, the remainin panels I having top and bottom closure flaps oldable over the side edges of said top and bottom flaps and terminatin in tongues engageable in said slits in sai top and bottom flaps whereby the top and bottom flaps are retained and supported in closed position.
3. A hexagonal box comprisin side wall panels, a pair of the diametrical y opposite panels having outwardly expanding complementary top flaps terminating in handle ex tensions disposed side by side and having registering hand'openings therein, saidvtop flaps having slits therein, the remaining" panels having top closure flaps foldableover the side edges of said top flaps and terminating in tongues engageable in slits in said top flaps whereby the top flaps are retained and supported in closed position.
4. A poly onal box comprisin side Wall panels, a pair of the diametrical y opposite panels having complementary top flaps terminating in handle extensions disposed side by side and having registering hand openings therein, said top flaps having slits therein, the remaining panels having top closure flaps foldable over the side edges of said top flaps and terminating in ton ues engageable in slits in said top flaps w ereby the top 4 5 flaps are retainedand supported in closed position. y
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
i HAROLD D. SCHRIER.
