Patented Aug. "19, 1930 PATENT oer-'ICE'- WILLIAM T. COX, F OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA ADJUSTABLE UNIVERSAL POST TOP-AND ARM Application iled July 25,
My invention pertains to adjustable universal post top and arm and relates to {itt-ings for tubular and solid fence posts of any suitable material. u
The objects of my invention are to provlde a device of this character for use in connection with the top of a fence post and a w1resupporting steel arm adapted for ad]usted positioning; which will be new, novel, and of utility; which will be strong, durable, cheap, and elicient in accomplishing the purposes for which it is intended; to provide a device in which one size and style of arm may be interchangeably used with varying sized casting 1s tops; a device in which the interchangeable arm may be positioned in the same vertical plane as that of the wire fence fabric supported by the post, or may extend at an angle from the vertical, inwardly or outwardly with respect to the front of the fence fabric, without reversing or changing the osition of the/said casting; to provide a casting that can be fitted to the post as the fence is being erected without any special machinery; to provide such a device that two arms extendlng in opposite directions from the vertical 'may be used upon the same casting; to provide a casting which can be used for a top guard alone to protect the fence post against interior corrosion and to which the arms may be attached at any time; to provide a casting which will furnish a support for the tubular top rail of a fence, which, when fitted to a vertical post, will permit the top rail to deviate from the horizontal to conform to the changing profile of the ground; to provide means for constructing a complete, nonclimbable steel fence where effective protection is essential such as athletic fields, estates, e0 parks, prison enclosures, industrial plants,
' and parking lots.
With these and other objects in view, the invention is illustrated in the attached onesheet drawing in which Figure 1 is side elevation showing the arm extending outwardly; Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing in dotted lines, the arm in a vertical position, and in full lines the arm extending inwardly; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of Fig. 1, showing in dotted lines two diverse positions of the top 1929. Serial No. 381,057.
rail; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspectiveview of the arm, and Fig, 5 is a perspective view of a fragmentary section of fence with barbed wire on the steel arms said steel arms extending inwardly.
It is to be understood that the gur'es inthe 55 drawings are illustrative and not restrictive; that other designs and styles of arms may be tted to the casting; that such details as exact length, size, weight and shape are immaterial.
Like. characters of reference designate like parts in all the figures.v
In the drawings 1 is a fence post, 2 the ad- 'ustable universal post top casting, having ase socket 3 which may be made of any size 65 to fit the post 1 being used, the said base 3 and the narrowed mid-section 4 of the said casting 2 forms a complete enclosure for the top of said post 1 and prevents the entrance of dust,
moisture or any oxidizing agents which might cause hidden interior corrosion. The narrowed mid-section 4 is provided with an elongated opening 5 surrounded by a thin web 6. Above the said mid-section 4 the top 7 is further narrowed, the junction between the said sections 4 and 7 forming a socket 8 with angular edges, edge 25 extending forward and upward, edge 26 being horizontal and edge 27 extending rearward and upward. The member 7 having a. single perforation terminates in an angular point having edges 9 sloping down to conform to the slope taken by the wire su porting adjustable steell arm 10 in both its fdrward and rearward extending positions. The said arm 10 may have 85 any desired shape but for'purposes of this description it has a channel or U-shaped cross-section the attachable end 11 being formed with a perforated bifurcation, the
said end 11 slips over and encloses member 7 being held in the -desired adjustable position by the bolt 12. For vertical position of the arm 10, the angular edges 15 of the bifurcated end 11 are placed so as to contact with the horizontal edge 26 of the socket 8. 95
For outwardly and inwardly extending positions of the arm 10, the angular edges 14 of the end 11 of arm 10 are placed so as to contact with the said edge 26 of socket 8. When arm 10 extends outwardly as just described, 10o
any of these desired edge contacts with edge 27, and edge 134 y purpose. The sides of the arms 10 are made wide and strong at 18 and taper to a narrow, rounded terminus at 19. This method of construction together with the U section provides a light stron support for the wire which will not buc e.
vThe elongated opening 5 in mid-section 4 is so placed that when to rail 2O is placed therethrough the front o said rail 2O will be in the same vertical plane as the front edge of the post l, and the front or top face 22 of arm 10 will be in this same plane when the said arm 10, is in its vertical position. The position of the said opening 5 remains the same regardless of the size of base 3 of casting 2 or the size of the post 1 upon which it is placed. The casting 2 remains in the same position on the ost regardless of the position and inclination of the arm 10. By reason of the fact that the openin 5 is elongated and is enclosed by the thin we 6, as can best be seen in Fi 3, considerable inclination can be given vto t e top rails 20 without the base 3 of casting 2 at 23 or edges of mi section 4 at 24, this will permit the fence to be constructed to conform to the changing role of the ground. By slightly modifying the bifurcated end 11 of arm 10, two arms extending in diverse directions, may be attached to the same ost should this arrangement be desirable. he casting 2 can be used as a final for the post 1, furmshing protection and givin it a neat finished appearance. If later, barbed wire or other wire protection is required the arms 10 and wire may be added as needed. While I have referred to the manner of making my device as a casting it is to be understood that this may be otherwise made such as stamping, and the like.
I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, but I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, shape, size, weight and other minor changes therein, without departing from the spirit and prin- Dciple of my invention, or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
The preferred embodiment where a top rail is used is as described, but in some instances, such as the leaving off of the top rail, and the like, it may be threaded to t a similarly threaded portion of a post.
