This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in 1111116. drills or angers and is intended for use by miners in drilling holes for setting powder blasts and the like and has for its primary object to provide improved screw feeding means for the drill comprising removable screw clamping jaws for engagement with the drill feed screw whereby the clamping screw jaws may be removed and a new cooperating drill feed screw substituted of adiffen ent tread pitchwhereby the drill feed screw may be fed forwardly at different speeds for accommodating the drill to wallstrata of different densities. j
A further object of the invention is to provide a mine drill of the above kind wherein the drill rod feeding screwis supported in the frame that iscapable of being supported alone upon the side wall of a mine room or, the like, or jointlysupported upon the side wall and the-floor, V

The forward end of the end portion 13 of the ,rod' 6 is an nularly reduced and externally threadedas at 16 to receive the inner threaded end 17 of the longitudinally split expanding jaws 18 that enclose the wedge head 15. The stub shaft 14; is longitudinally shifted in the socketed end 13 of therod 6, the rod end 13 having anannular enlargement externally threaded as at 19 with a longitudinally extending slot 20 formed in-a sidewall of the enlargement and into which slot the pin 21 laterally projecting from the shaft 14 extends. The pin 21 extends into .an inner annular groove 22 formed in the nut- 23 so 19, the nut is shifted longitudinally of the rod end 13 to carry therewith the pin 21 and stub shaft 14. As the jaws 18 are formed of resilient metal, the same are forced open upon forward projection of the wedge head andare automatically retracted when the wedge head 15 and shaft 14- are drawn into the socketed end 13 of the rod '6. The rod end 13 is illustrated in Figure 1 as mounted in. the chiseled opening 11 in the wall 12 and supports the upper end of'the frainethat' carries the drill rod feeding screw.
The support for the lower end of the frame comprises a rod .24 threaded at one end as at and passing through an opening in'the head 8 that is carried by the cross shaft 3, similar to the support for therod 6. The shaft 3 is held in rotatably adjusted position by the nuts 4 as indicated by the dotted and full line positions of the rod 24- in F ig'ure'l, while the longitudinal adjustment of the rod is accomplished by the j ainb nut 10 cooperating with the aperture'd. head 8. The forward pointed end of the rod 24 T 'maybe driven into an opening inthe wall 12, or the end of said rod may engage the "outer face of the wall, or further be disposed in the vertical position for engaging the ground or floor as illustrated by dotted lines. The drill rod feeding screw 41 isrotated with the sleeve 31 and longitudinal screw feeding thereof is accomplished by the provision of two thread jaws 43 and 44 detachably carried by the block 5'and havingthe threads thereof of pitch similar to the thread pitch of the drill rod feeding screw 41. The screw block thread jaws are connected together and are detachablymounted on the side of the block 5, opposite tlie'gear36, the opposedface of one of the thread jaws carrying a wear plate 45 laterally of the threaded portion 46. As shown in Figure-7, the two jaws-43 V V and 44 at. opposite sides of the central threaded cavities are provided with aligned openings 49, therod 50 disposed in said aligned openings having one end annularly enlarged and threaded as at 51 for threaded engagement with an opening at the outer end of the thread jaw '44 while the other end of the rod 50 clearly extends through the opening 49in the thread jaw 43. From the above detailed description of the invention, it, is believed that the construction and ope'ration thereof' will at once be apparent,jit being noted-that theprimary object of the'invent'ion is" to provideinterchangeable thre'ad jaws 43"and 44, and an interchangeable drill rod feed screw 41' so that thread jaws and a feed-screw of a larger thread text may be utilized for boring a powder blast opening in a relatively soft wall while thread jaws and a feed screw of a finer thread pitch may be utilized for a harder wall of greater density. Rotation of the drill rod feed screw 41 is accomplished upon rotation of the gear 36 of the gear train that is fixed to the sleeve 31 carrying the longitudinal key 35 that extends into the groove 42 of the feed screw, these devices imparting rotary movement to the screw while longitudinal feeding movement thereof is accomplished by the thread jaws 43 and 44 which are locked to the stationary block 5 by the screw bolts 48, while they'have threaded engagement with the fed screw as snown in Figures 6 and 7 \Vhile there is'herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. I
Vhat I claim as new is 1. In a miners drill, a frame, a block mounted on the frame, a pair of relatively movable thread jaws detaohably mounted on the block, a drill rod feeding screw extending through the block and adapted to be engaged by the thread jaws, rotatable means on the block having a spline connection with the feed screw, springs normally separating the jaws, guide pins for the jaws surrounded by the springs, and means for closing the jaws against the spring tension thereon positioned eXteriorly of the jaws and connected to the pins.
2. In a miners drill, a frame, a block mounted on the frame, a pair of relatively movable thread jaws detachably mounted on the block, a drill rod feeding screw extending through the block and adapted to be engaged by the thread jaws, rotatable means on'the block having a spline connection with thefeed screw, said jaws having alined openings therein, pins anchored in the openings of one jaw and freely extending through the opening of the other jaw, a spring surrounding each pin and engaging the jaws to normally separate the same, a yoke connecting the pins outwardly of'the jaws, and a cam lever pivoted on the yoke cngageable with the jaws to close the same on the feeding screw. 1

In a miners drill, a frame, a block mounted on the frame, a pair of relatively movable thread jaws detachably mounted on one, side of the block, a drill rod feeding I screw extending through the block and adapted to be engaged by the thread jaws, rotatable means on the block having a spline connection with the feed screw, spring devices for normally holding the jaws separated and a cam carried by said spring de-. vices for moving the jaws into clamping engagement with the feed screw, the spring devices including registering openings in the jaws, pins extending through the openings and anchored at corresponding ends in one jaw, a shoulder at the outer end of the openings in the other jaw, a coil springsurrounding each pin and confined by the an; chored ends and shoulders, and said cam being attached to the projecting ends of the pins.
