This invention relates to improvements in adjustable eraser holders and more particularly to an adjustable eraser holder for a mechanical pencil permitting replacement of an eraser.
Many mechanical pencils now in use are not equipped with erasers, or mechanical pencils, as well as other pencils, are provided with cupped portions at one end in whlch the eraser is secured. The exposed portion of the eraser quickly becomes worn down with the result that the pencil is. discarded or the useris subjected to the inconvenience of using the pencil without an erasing portion.
It is, therefore, one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the above objections by providing an eraser holder for a pencil in which the eraser carrying portion and the eraser may be adjusted with respect to each other to expose more or less of the eraser as it becomes worn.
A further object of the invention is'to provide an adjustable mechanical pencil eraser holder so arranged with respect to the pencil that the length of the pencil remains constant and does not vary with different adjustments of the eraser.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pencil eraser holder of the class described in' which the eraser may be readily removed from the pencil and replaced when required.- 7
A further object of the invention is to provide a pencil eraser holder in which, as the eraser is projected, its inner end will always be seated against a supporting member to provide a firm base for the eraser when it is used for erasing purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide in an adjustable eraser holder construction for a mechanical pencil, a combined eraser projector and auxiliary lead holder or reservoir, the arrangement being such that access may be easily gained to said reservoir for the insertion of or removal of extra pencil leads.
A further object of the invention'is to provide an adjustable eraser holder for pencils adaptable to any form of pencil, and particularly to the so-called self-feeding or mechanical pencils.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable and refillable pencil eraser holder of the class described which is of very simple construction, is inexpensive to manufacture, is strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purposes described.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved adjustable and refillable pencil eraser holder, and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing it will appear that the numeral 8 indicates a mechanical pencil of ordinary construction, the body portion of which is tubular to receive mechanical lead feeding mechanism for the projection of the pencil lead 9. The upper end portion of the body or barrel 10 of the pencil is provided with a longitudinally extendingopening or bore 13.
The numeral 14 designates an elongated eraser projecting member and-said member includes a depending barrel or reservoir 15 having a closed lower end and mounted fast on the open upper end portion of the barrel 15 is a worm member 16. The outer end portion of the body or barrel of the pencil revolubly carries an elongated cylinder member 1'5, and the slightly reduced inner end portion rt cylinder member extends revolubiy removably into the upper end worm member 16, said worm portion of a metal reinforcing band 11 whose' ower end portion is non-revolubly fitted on the lslightly reduced up r end portion of the y-or barrel 10. e interior of said cylinder member is threaded, as indicated at 18, and said threaded portion 18 is adapted to engage the exterior threads 19 of the being enclosed by the cylinder member.
The side wall of the barrel portion 15 of the eraser projector 14 is rovided with an elongated slot 20 into which a pin 21 projects, said pin projecting fixedly inwardly through the lower portion of the band 11 and the upper portion of the barrel 10. The engagement between the pin 21 and slot 20 permits longitudinal movements of the eraser projector 14 within the bore 13 and also with respect to the interior of the cylinder member 17 but the member 14 is held against rotation by said pin and slot engagement.
A- cylindrically shaped eraser member 22 is disposed within said cylinder member 17 and seats on the outer or. top surface of the worm portion 16 of the eraser projector 14, so as to be moved by movements of the eraser projector. In proper adjustment, the outer end portion of the eraser will project beyond the outer end portion of the cylinder member 17 so as to be ex sed, and the outer end portion of said cy inder member is tapered inwardly so asto supportingly engage the extendin eraser portion.

justments of this character will not vary the length of the pencil and the inner end portion of the, eraser will always be firmly seated on the worm end portion of the eraser projector. Also, when necesary the eraser member may be readily removed and replaced and said removal and replacement ma be efiected through the outer tapered en portion of the cylinder member 17, and
also when the eraser 22 is thus removed the open end portion of the barrel or reservoir of the eraser projector is exposed and auxiliary leads 23-may be dropped thereinto or removed therefrom. Also, access to said auxiliary lead reservoir and removal or re placement of the eraser may be efiected by unscrewing the cylinder member 17 with respect to the worm 16 as far as possible so as to disengage the threads of both members and then the cylinder member may be completely removed from the band. 11 by pulling it therefrom. a Y s the foregoing description it will be seen that the improved adjustable and refillable eraser holder for both sim tudinally movably mo end and open at its outer end and havirllg on its outer end ortion a threaded he member in threa ed en gement with an inner portion of said cylinder, member, and means for holding said projector member against rotation, said pro ector member being adapted to support and move an eraser within said cylinder.
