Description
L. WARNER.
SLATE-DRESSING MACHINE.
Patented April 11, 1876.
N.PETERS, PHOTOLITHOGRAPNEIR, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LYMAN WARNER, OF BELVIDERE, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLATE-DRESSING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,103, dated April 11, 1876; application filed November 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, LYMAN WARNER, of Belvidere, in the county of Warren and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables or Machines for Surfacing or Dressing Slate, 8tc.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and' to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved slate, 850., surfacing or dressing table. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof through the dotted line 17 a: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a similar view thereof through the dotted line y y of the same figure.
Corresponding parts of the several figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in tables or machines forsurfacing or dressing slate, 85c; and it consists of a circu cular or other shaped table, to which is affixed or adjusted, on a lower plane, a leaf, and which 1s provided with an opening or groove to receive a rotating cutter or cutters, substantially as hereinafter more fullyset forth.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to a table, supported upon legs a a, braced at their lower egds by pieces a a, uniting with each other at their centers, where they are provided with a socket or orifice to receive and form a bearing for the lower end of the shaft or axis B, its upper end being socketed, and receiving a pintle or stud, b, depending from the said table, the shaft being free to turn thereon. To the pintle A is affixed or adjusted, by screws 0 c, or otherwise, on a lower plane, the leaf (J to receive the slate, 850., to be surfaced or dressed. In the table A is a circular groove or opening, 01, to receive the upwardly-projecting cutters D D attached to a frame, E, or other medium connected to the shaft or axis B, rotated by pulleys and belt, 850. As the slate or other material is passed from the leaf 0 onto the table, it being lower than the table, as above intimated, the operation of surfacing or dressing the same will take place, an amount of the slate or other material being cut off equal to the difference in height between the table and leaf. To permit of the slate or other material (being dressed) being drawn over the table, it (the latter) is pro vided in its upper surface with an oblong concavity or depression, 6, to receive one of the fingers of the hand. The leaf 0 may be raised or lowered by its adjusting-screws c c or other mechanism when it is desired to vary the difference in height between it and the table in regulating the amount of thickness to be out from the slate or other material being surfaced or dressed. The opening 01 may have its greater portion bridged, as shown at f f, and the table A provided with a guide or strip, g, to guide the slate or other material as it passes over the same. The removal of the bridgeff will not affect the nature of my invention, notwithstanding, in that case, to provide the table with the groove or opening d it would have to be formed in two parts.-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the table A, the cutter groove or opening 01 and leaf 0, the rotatin g cutter or cutters D D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The table A, having the groove or opening dand leaf 0, in combination with the out ters D D, frame E, shaft or axis B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LYMAN WARNER.
Witnesses ALMON WARNER, S. SHERRERD.
