JAMES F. BAKER, or LOS ensures, cemronnra $AFETY ATTACHMENT FOR POCKETBOGKS AND THE LIKE Application filed. May 22, 1929. Serial No. 365,067.
This invention is a safety attachment for any container of a type which is normally carried in the pocket, hereinafter referred to as a pocket container and including any pocket book, bill fold, pass card holder, key container, memorandum book, etc.
It is the object of the invention to provide an extremely simple but practical attachment whereby a container may be releasably held in the pocket against surreptitious or acci-i It is a still further object of the invention to provide an attachment. which may be folded out of the way when -not desired for use, and which when in operative position will permit the container assuming usual po sition in a pocket, with the attachment readily accessible to an authorized person for either fastening or releasing the same. 1
'Further objects of the invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of apocket container showing the safety attachment.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the method of fastening and releasing the safety attachment for securing the container in a pocket. 1
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section through a pocket showing the container fastened therein.
The safety attachment, which may be secured to any type of container such as is normally carried in the pocket. is herein illustrated as employed in connection with a usual leather bill fold or pass card holder 1. with the attachment comprising a strip 2 of suitable flexible material fixed to one side of the bill fold 1 and projecting beyond the end and rests upon the bottom of the pocket in thereof as shownin Fig. 1. The strip 2 is adapted for, releasable fastening engagement with a coo ieratin fastenin element )rovided in any usual pocket A in the clothing B of the user, the cooperating fastening element being shown as a button 3 adaptedto engage a button hole 4 in the end of strip 2. r
The button 3 is preferably adjacent the lower end of pocket A and is fastened to that interior face of the pocket which will position the button convenient to the palm of the hand of the user when the hand is inserted in the pocket, and the strip 2 is preferably of a length whereby when fastened to button 3 and extended to its full length the container 1 will be held against withdrawal from the pocket as shown in Fig. 2, with the fastened strip of such flexibility as to permit it to readily fold as shown in Fig. 3 so that the container 1 is received entirely within pocket A usual manner.
' If not desired for usethe strip 2 maybe folded back in the container 1 as shown in dotted-lines in Fig. 1, and when the safety attachment is to be used the container 1 is insertedin the pocket with the strip 2 projecting beyond the forward end of the container as shown in Fig. 2. As soon as button hole 4 alines with button 3 the fingers grasping container 1 are slipped down along strip 2 and fix the button in its cooperating button hole, and the container is then shoved down to the bottom of the pocket as shown in Fig. 3 and the hand is -withdrawn. The container is thus securely held against unauthorized or accidental removal from the pocket, but may be readily released for withdrawal by inserting the hand and first lifting the container from the position shown. in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 2, so that the strip 2 is extended and the button 3 is thus readily accessible for unfasteningthe same. Then the button has been disengaged the container may be withdrawn fromthe pocket in usual manner.
The strip 2 is thus adapted for convenient manipulation to release or secure the container in a pocket, and when fastened to button 3 will positively hold the container against removal from the pocket while per- 100 initting the container to assume its usual position resting upon the bottom of the pocket.
The strip 2 is preferably of leather but may be of any other suitable flexible material, and may be stitched or riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the end of container 1, the drawings showing the strip as secured to the container by rivets 6, a construction which provides for the strip being attachedto the container at the time ofits manufacture or permits the strip being subsequently secured to any usual container. The button 3 may be secured in place in any usual manner, but is preferably fastened without the use of thread and by a usual readily engageable snap fastener 7 so that the safety attachment may be conveniently used in connection with any desired pocket. V 7
The invention thus provides convenient but simple means for securing a container in a pocket, with the securing means readily manipulated by the handof an authorized person when inserting or withdrawing the container, but so positioned as to insure de tection in the event of a surreptitious attempt to release the securing means and withdraw the container. The attachment thus provides an adequate safety means for preventing accidental loss or theft of any container which is adapted to be carried in the pocket, with the attachment readily adapted for use in connection with any desired pocket which is provided with the necessary cooperating fastening means.
I claim:
1. In combination, a pocket, a container adapted for reception in the pocket so as to seat against the bottom thereof, a strip projecting beyond that end of the container which is first inserted in the pocket. and which seats against the bottom of the pocket, anda but-ton adapted for mounting in the pocket adjacent its lower end and at the in. terior face of the pocket which is proximate to the palm of the hand inserted in the pocket, the strip having a button hole adapted to receive the button for securing the container in the pocket, and the strip being of a flexible material permitting it to fold over the fastened button when the container seats against the bottom of the pocket.
2. In combination, apocket, a container adapted for reception in the pocket so as to seat against the bottom thereof, a strip projecting beyond that end of the container which is first inserted in the pocket and which seats against the bottom of the pocket, and fastening means in the pocket adapted to .releasably engage the strip for securing the container in the pocket, said fastening means being positioned adjacent the lower end of the pocket and at the interior face thereof which is proximate to the palm of a hand inserted. in the pocket, andthe strip being of a flexible material permitting it to fold over nature. 7
the engaged fastening means when the containe'r seats against the bottom of the pocket.
3. In combination, a pocket, container adapted for reception in the pocket, a strip projecting beyond the container, and fastening means in the pocket adapted to releasably engage the strip for securing-the container in thepoeket, said fastening means being positionedadjacent the lower end of the pocket and at the interior face thereof which is proximate to the palm of a hand inserted in thepocket.
4:. In combination, a pocket, a container adaptedvfor reception in the pocket, and fastening means in the pocket adapted to releasably engage the container for securing it in the pocket, said fastening means being posie. tioned adjacent the lower end of the pocket and at-the interior face thereof which is proximate to the palm of a hand inserted in the pocket. 7 V
5. In combination, a pocket,a container adapted for reception in the pocket so as; to seat 'againstthe bottom thereof, a strip projecting beyond that end of the container which is first inserted in the pocket and which seats against the bottom of the pocket, and fastening means in the pocket adapted to releasably engage the strip for securing the container'in the pocket, said fastening means being positioned adjacent the lower end of the pocket, and the strip being of a flexible material permitting it to fold over the engaged fastening means when the. container seats against the bottom of the pocket.
In testimony whereof I have'atfixed my sig- JAMES F. BAKER.
