Description

Jan. 14, 1930. J s, PAYNE 1,743,683
DRIVING MECHANISM FOR SNOWPLOWS.
Filed Oct. 23. 1926 Patented Jan. 14, 1930 UNITED STATES JOHN s. PAYNE, or MIDLAND PARK BonoUeHfivEw JiaRSaT.`
DRIVING MECHANISM non `,s'ivowrnowns Y Application mea october 23, 192s.. serial No. 143,535!l will enable the stub shafts, .with the bevelv gears mounted thereon, to be assembled in the machine, and disassembled therefrom, without disassembling other parts of the machine, whereby a material economy of time and labor will be effected.
It has been the practice, in snow plows heretofore known, to drive the rotor by a main shaft, carrying abevel gear, which is driven by two smaller bevel gears, mounted on stub shafts, disposed at a right angle to the main shaft, one on each side thereof. The stub shafts are journalled in bearing supports, formed integrally with the bed plate casting, which type of construction has nezo cessitated the removal, vertically, of all three shafts, with their gears, and the disconnection of many associated parts, such as both connecting rods, and both eccentric rods, whenever it has been necessary to repair or replace one of the small gears. This disadvantage is attended with the further disadvantage of having to dismantle substantially all of the housing at the front end of the snow plow, to permit removal of the three shafts.
:so As the small gears are subjected to a great amount of wear, their frequent repair and renewal are incidents of service, and the op erations of assembling and disassembling the gears, involves great inconvenience and eX- pense. Y
In my improved construction, the bearing l'blocks for the stub shafts are formed with dove tails, which lit in complementary grooves in the bed, thus permitting the bear 40 ing blocks, stub shafts, and small bevel gears to be moved, as a unit, horizontally away from the machine without disassembling any of the other parts of the machine, the unit being of a size to permit it to be moved out of the usual door in the side wall of the housing.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth. y
In accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a 5G half vertical transverse section, of the rotor driving mechanism of a-snow plow embodying my invention, showing-one of the stub shafts with its bed plate, bearingA block, crank, and bevel gear; and, Fig. 2, an'end view of the constructionl shown in Fig. 1, the
In the` practice of my' invention, referring desoriptively to the specific embodiment thereof which is herein exemplified as applied ingV the rotor, ofl usual lconstruction, (not shown), extends Elongitudinally of the Aplow frame, and carries .a'large bevel gear, 11, which is driven by. two'smaller bevel gears,
12, mounted onstub shafts,l 13, disposed one l i on each'side of the 'main shaft, and at a right angle thereto'.` i crank, 11,A and is mounted in a bearing-block, comprising fa body, 15,-formed' with a dove.-
tail `base,'1.5a.-and a cap, 16, detachablyi con- 70W nected to the lbody by bolts, 17. Aiiange, 18, extends fromY-each side @ofthe body, and is adapted to vreceive bolts, 19,Y which detach#v ably fasten the blockto the bed,"2();,connectedy to the middle'sills, 21, ofthejfsnow plow 75" frame.` y i The bed, 20, is ,formed ywith a dovet-ail groove, 20a-,adapted to receive the dove tail,
15a, on the body of the bearingblock, and..
is provided with bolt holes which receive the s bolts, 19, for securing the blocks in place. The grooves, 20a, are of sufficient width to permit the small gears, when assembled on their stub shafts, to be moved therethrough.
In assembling the machine, a bearing block, ;v n
stub shaft, small bevel gear, and crank, are assembled as a unit, which is moved into place, to bring the small bevel gear into mesh with the large bevel gear, 11, by sliding the dovetail, 15a, of the block, into the groove, 90"
Each stub `shaftcarries 'a shafts in proper position. It is further Within the contemplation of the invention to form the bed as an integral part of the longitudinal sills of the snow plow.
From the foregoing descriptiomit will be l obvious that, when it is desired to repair or replace a small bevel gear, it ismerely necessary tounfasten the bolts, 19, whereupon the stub shafts, small gear, crank, and bearing block, may be moved, as a unit, horizontally away from the remainder of the machine. The improvement obviates the disadvantage, present in snow plows heretofore known, of having to removeall three shafts with their gears, from the machine, and dismantling substantially all of the housing at the front of the plow, to enable such removal.
I 4claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. Ina device of the character described,
vthe combination of a journal box having lateral'flanges and a downwardly extending portion therefrom providing a rigid unitary structure for the journal; a support for the box having a channel for engaging the said downwardly extending portion, and lateralk extensions beneath said flanges; and means for securing the box relative to the support.
2. In a device of the character described,
Ythe combination of a journal box having lateral flanges and a downwardly extending portion therefrom providing a rigid unitary struct-ure for the journal, said portion having a'horizontal base and downwardly and outwardly flaring partial side walls; a support for the box having a channel for engaging said downwardly extending portion Y having a horizontal seat for supporting said horizontal base, and side walls opposite to and spaced from the said flaring walls, and lateral extensions beneath said flanges; and means for securing the box relative to the support, comprising keys engaged in said spaces for holding the box upon its seat.
