Description

'F; BILLINGHAM.
Signs.
No.162,144. Patented ApriI20J875.
WITNESSES. %Z% A W MW 7 INVENTOR.
THE GRAPHIC CO.PHOTO.-LITH.89&41 PARK PLACE,N Y
FRANCIS BILLINGHAM, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIGNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162.144, dated April 20, 1875; application filed August 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS BILLINGHAM, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improxements in Signs; and that the following is a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a view of my improved sign, the mirrors having been opened. Fig. 2 is a view of the same, the mirrors having been closed.
In the drawing the parts of the invention are pointed out by the same letters of refercure.
The nature of the present invention consists in combining a sign or signs with a gas-burner and the mirrors or like reflecting-surfaces, as more fully hereinafter described; the object of the invention being to combine the sign or signs with the gas-burner and mirrors, or like reflecting surfaces, in such a manner that the light yielded by the gas shall be reflected by the mirrors or like reflecting-surfaces upon the sign or signs, and serve to illuminate and attract attention to the same.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the construction and operation of the same.
A shows the support or holdt'ast for a bracket, B, formed, preferably, of gas-pipe, and twisted in course of manufacture, so that an open space is formed, in which is inserted a disk of suitable material, 0, upon the sides of which are delineated any desired signs or letterin The forward end of the bracket B is bent downward, and then upward, and is supplied with a gas-burner, D, over which, if
necessary, a globe may be placed. The disk, secured in the open space, stands about in line with the center of the burner D, and above it. At the rear of the open space formed by the bending of the bracket 13 are hinged the circular plates E, lined with looking-glass or some bright reflecting-surface, and so hinged that when opened they shall stand at an angle to the sign or signs, and. to the gas-burner. The circular plates E are hinged, so that they may be closed over and upon the sign or signs in the daytime, or when the burner is not being used, and may have, if desired, signs lettered or depicted upon their exterior.
Such being the construction, the bracket may be attached, by means of the support A, over the entrance to the hotel, restaurant, theater, or other building, and, when in use, the circular plates E are opened, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the gas may be lighted, and the light yielded by the same is reflected, by the mirrors or like reflecting-surfaces secured in the covers E, upon the sign or signs secured in the open space, thus illuminating the same, and attracting the attention of the passers-by to them.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the bracket B, constructed substantially as described, and provided with a burner, D, with the sign or signs (J and the covers E, lined with a reflectingsurface, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
FRANCIS BILLINGHAM.
