The present invention refers to pincers for tattooing cattle, pigs and animals of other kinds susceptible of such marking and has for its object the provision of pincers of this kind, embodying several improvements upon those at present in use, one of which improvements consists in the adaptation to such instruments of a system of interaction of the parts to which the types are affixed, in such a manner as to produce an automatic rotation of numbers at each impression,
The instrument which is the object of this invention is characterized essentially by a pair of pincers the longer ends of which are grasped in the hand, and the shorter ends of which bear, respectively, a supporting-plate and an axle provided with discs, on the rim of which discs are aflixed the tattooing types or characters. These discs are capable of rotating to the extent of the space between two types, at each movement, under the pressure of claws which engage in the sides of each disc at each movement of opening the pincers.
The advantages of this instrument consist in the facility of numbering without the necessity of manipulating the marking-type. In the instruments in use, in order to change the mark it is necessary to remove the type and reset it, while in that to which this invention refers, numbering can be carried out in such a manner as to form a different mark at each impression.
In order that the present invention may be clearly understood and readily employed it has been represented by way of example, and in one of its preferable forms, in the attached drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the instrument in profile.

The pincers are formed by the arms 1 and 2 pivoted at 3 and kept open normally by means of a spring 4t. The prolongation of one of the arms 5 bears a small plate of fibre 6 upon which is placed in position the part of the animal to be tattoed. be easily extracted when it is required to substitute one disc by another, it beng only needful for this pupose to unscew a stud inseted in one of the extremities. The discs are held in a fixed position by means of any suitable spring-locking device mounted upon the axle and fitting into slots on the inside of the discs. This device has not been illustrated in the drawings as it does not form .5 and 7, the shaft 0' and arms 0 are caused to oscillate about the axle (t, the pawls d acting upon the several ratchet wheels I) in a manner hereinafter more fully described.
Each of the ratchet wheels 6 isprovided between two of its adjacent teeth with a recess 15 of greater depth than the recesses intermediate the remaining teeth of the ratchet wheel and, beginning with the ratchet wheel Z) at one end of the axle a therecesses 15 of the successive ratchet wheels decrease in depth. For the purpose of more clearly illustrating this feature of the invention reference is made to Figure 3 wherein three of the ratchet wheels I) are illus trated, the varying depth of the recesses 15 therein being clearly evident. In this figure the foremost ratchet wheel is indicated at b, the next adjacent ratchet wheel at b and the distant ratchet wheel at b.
The pawls indicated at d, d and cl coact, respectively, with the three ratchet wheels I), Z) and b and said pawls are arranged in predetermined angular relation to c and to each other, that is, the pawls (Z occupies a position slightly in advance of the pawl d and the latter pawl occupies a position slightly in advance of the pawl cl".
Assuming the parts to be in a position indicated in Figure 3, the oscillating movement of the shaft 0' about the axle a incident to the operation of the pincers cause the pawl d to successively engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel I) thus producing a step by step rotary motion of the ratchet wheel I) in the direction of the arrow and, as will be understood, at each movement of the ratchet wheel 2 the type carrying disc a carried by said wheel, is moved to a position to dispose a new type of tattooing element 1 in a position opposite the fiber plate 6. 'lhroughont the initial revolution of the ratchet wheel 6 the advanced angular position of the pawl (l in respect to'the other pawls d and d retains the two last mentioned pawls in inoperative position in respect to their respective ratchet wheels I) and 6". However, when the ratchet wheel I) has completed one revolution the pawl 7) drops into the recess 15 under the influence of the spring 16 and the pawl (Z is thus permitted to engage one teeth of its ratchet wheel Z) and hence upon the successive oscillations of the shaft (2 the ratchet wheel 7) is moved with the wheel (I one step. Thereafter, the pawl. (Z again engaging the relatively shallow recesses of the ratchet wheel Z theipawl d is again moved out of operative position relative to the ratchet wheel 6 and the latter remains in active until the pawl d again drops into the recess 15 of the ratchet wheel 5. Thus, if'the ratchet wheel 6 is provided with ten teeth, it will complete ten revolutions to one revt lution of the next adjacent ratchet wheel Z) owing to the fact that the latter only moves one step to each complete revolution of the ratchet wheel 5.
The mode of operation of the ratchet wheels 6 and all other ratchet wheels with which the device may be equipped is similar and as will be understood when the ratchet wheel bhas completed one revolution its pawl d dropping into the recess 15 of the wheel 6 will permit thepawl d to engage the teeth of its ratchet wheel cl and thus advance the latter one step, said wheel I) being advanced one step at each revolution of the ratchet wheel I) i By means of a catch 8 and its stud 9 the operation of the claws can be suspended and the apparatus will then repeat the same impression, Or the type can be changed by hand, by revolving the discs with the fingers. The notches may also be suppressed and discs fitted which require to be moved by hand. In this manner it is possible to arrange combinations of movable and fixed discs in order to form inscriptions composed of a permanent portion and a variable one, as, for instance, permanent initialletters and figures forming consecutive numbers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim 'is:- p
1. A tattooing instrument comprising a pair of pivoted members, a plate carried by one of said members, a shaft journaled in the other member, a plurality of type elements journaled on said shaft, ratchet teeth fttll'lGCl by the type elements, a frame pivoted I on said shaft laterally of said type elements, pawls carried by said frame adapted to cooperate with said ratchet teeth, and a linlr connection between the first mentioned pivoted member and said frame to oscillate the latter incident to relative movement of the pivoted members;
2. An instrument claimed in claim 1. characterized. in that the ratchet teeth as sociated with the respective type elements are of varying depthwhereby to cause progressive rotation of the several type elements incident to repeated movements of the pivoted members.
3. A tattooing instrument comprising a pair of pivoted members, a plate carried by the extremity of one of said members a shaft carried by the extremity of the other member, a plurality of type elements arranged side by side and relatively rotatable on said shaft, and ratchet wheels carried by the type elements, said ratchet wheels having notches therein, the notches in the several ratchet wheels increasing in depth from one end of the shaft to the other, a frame pivoted to said shaft, pivoted pawls carried by said frame adapted to cooperate with the ratchet wheels, a link connection between the first mentioned pivoted member-and said frame, and means carried by said frame for coacting with said pawls whereby to move and retain the latter out of operative relation to the ratchet wheels.
