IMPROVEMENT IN MILLERS PAINT-STAFFS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,155, dated March 23, 1875 5 application filed September 21, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM RANsoM, of Noah, in the county'of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Red-Staff for Millstones; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica-V tion.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a red-staff for millstones, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. l

In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a plan view, and Fig. 2 is a section of one of the sides.

My improved red-staff is made in triangular form, as shown, open in the center,I each side of the triangle being made of three strips, A, of wood, fastened together by screws or other suitable means, and arranged with the grain of the wood running in different directions. The sides ofthe triangle are united together in step form, forming shoulders a a. The under side of the triangle is lined with strips B, covering the edges of the side strips A. By this construction there is no liability of the sta getting out of order by shrinking and swelling, and consequent warping. In the base of the triangle is inserted a spirit or water level, G, and in the apex of the triangle a similar level is inserted, the two levels being set at right angles with each other.

I am aware that rectangular staffs have been used, and also a staff of triangular form turning upon a central pivot, and I lay no claim to such device; but

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A red-staff for millstones, made in trian gular form, each side of the triangle being coinposed of a series of strips, A, set on edge,

and a fiat strip, B, covering their edges, and

the sides joined together, all as and for the purpose herein set forth.
