WATER BIKE.
Application filed July 1,
This invention relates to water bikes.
An object of the invention residesin the provision of a comparatively inexpensive, simple and durable device particularly use ful for enjoyment in streams or on large bodies of water.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a water bike which may be easily and readily propelled on bodies of water for enjoyment or for purposes of exercise and which may be readily propelled without danger of upsetting.
A still further object is to provide an amusement device for use on bodies of water for pleasure or other purposes and in which the user may be comfortably seated without danger of upsetting in. propelling the toy through or over the water.
l Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the ad vantages thereof.
In the drawings V Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view through the propulsion mechanism.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 4 indicates a floatable member shown in this instance as composed of a pneumatic tube which may be readily inflated or deflated through a valve mechanism 5.
A pair of supports 6 and a rear support 7 depend from the fioatable member 4: in converging relation for the purpose of support ing a crank casing 8 provided with a removable closure 9 to permit access to the casing. These supports 6 and 7 are bolted at their lower ends as at 10 to the top of the casing 8 and at their upper ends they are provided with substantially semi-circular seats 11 and 12, respectively, to removably receive the floatable member 4 and with these seats 11 and 12 cooperate clamping members 13 and 141: respectively, which. are secured by bolts 1926. Serial No. 119,953.
15 so that the floatable member may be readily positioned or removed to permit of the insertion of a new floatable member 1 in the event of destruction of the floatable member due to wear or other reasons.
A crank shaft 16 provided with pedals 17 is journaled in any suitable manner in the casing8- and a beveled or other gear 18 is keyed or otherwise fixedly secured on the crank shaft 15 within the casing 8.
A propeller shaft 19 is journaled in the tubular casing 20 in the form of an elongated extension of the cover 9 and on the inn-er end of this propeller shaft 19 and located within the casing 8 is a beveled gear 21 adapted to mesh with the aforesaid beveled gear 18 of the crank shaft 16. A propeller 22 of any suitable character is secured on the outer end of the propeller shaft 19 as shown. This tubular casing 20 for the propeller shaft is suitably supported from the rear support 7 through the instrumentality of a brace 23 or this tubular casing 20 may be supported in any other suitable manner.
A bracket 23 is secured to the upper ends of the front supports 6 and in this bracket a steering post 24 is journaled. A suitable handle bar 25 is secured to the upper end of this steering post 24; and to the lower end of the post 2 1 a rudder 26 is secured whereby to provide suitable steering mechanism within the convenience and control of the user or rider whose position is within the floatable member 4 and who may occupy a seat 27 supported at the upper end of a seat post 28 secured preferably to the rear support 7 While there is little or no danger of the bike upsetting in the water it will be seen, however, that the supports for the casing 8 are arranged so as to be out of the way of the driver and to permit of ready extrication of one in the event if the bike should upset in the water.
The invention is of comparatively simple structure and consequently comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and is of such nature as to afford considerable amusement at watering places.
hat I claim is:
1. A water bike comprising an annular floatable body member, supports depending from said member and in which the member is removably mounted, a casing supported by said supports, a pedal shaft journaled in said casing, a gear on said. shaft located in a tubular extension extending from said casing, a propel er shaft journaled in said tubular extension and projecting into the casing, a gear on the inner end of the propeller shaft in mesh with the gear on the pedal shaft, a brace connection between the tubular extension and one of said supports a propeller on the outer end of the propeller shaft, a seat supported on one of said supports, and a steering device connected to a pairvof said supports whereby to steer the bike.
2. A Water bike comprising an annular fioatable body member, supports vdepending from said member and having semi-circular upper ends, semireircular elements removably engaging the upper ends of the supports to form encircling members for the annular fioatable body member, an arched brace extending between two of said supports and l in in the same alane as the bod member 1 r y e l y and conforming thereto, a bearing carried by In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
