This invention relates to a railway car coupler, particularly for use with foreign types of car couplers during the transitional period.
t is common practice in foreign countries to couple railway cars by means of a chain Near each side of the car at the ends thereof are provided buffers or resilient plungers. 1n some foreign countries steps are being taken toward the adoption of a standard coupler such as is used in the United States, but inasmuch as the transition from one type to the other cannot be made all at once, means must be provided to couple cars equipped with old and new apparatus. V
Une object of the present invention is to provide a car coupler of the M. C. B. type, with simple and efficient means whereby it may be easily and safely connected and disconnected with respect to a foreign type of coupler.
Another object is to provide a M. C. l. type of coupler with a chain-engaging pulling lug having means for locking the chain against accidental disengagement.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement shown on the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- F ig. 1 is a top plan view of a car coupler of the M. C. B. type provided with chain attachment means whereby the chain is connected and locked to the pulling lug against accidental disengagement;

Fig. 3 is a detail elevational view showing the pulling lug having connected thereto a chain link which is shown in section.
The various novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

As mentioned above, this coupler is to be used during the transitional period with a foreign. type of car coupler in which there is used the usual chain and hook connection.

portion of the pulling lug 16 is of a dimen- A sion which occupies substantially the entire space between the arms of the link 15, and said pulling lug 16 is provided with a relatively large forwardly-spreading base 17, as best shown in Fig. 2. Rearwardly of the pulling lug 16 is a projection 18 which eX- tends upwardly from the top of the coupler head 10 and which cooperates with the pulling lug in maintaining the link 15 in its proper operative position. More particularly, the projection 18 cooperates with what may be termed a cap, lateral projections or a flange 19 formed integrally with the tap of the pulling lug 16.
Referring more particularly to Figs. l and 3, it will be noted that the cap 19 is of such lateral width as to prevent the disengagement. of the link 15 when the link is in its normal position with its major axis lengthwise of the coupler shank. However, the cap 19 is sutliciently shallow in depth forwardly and rearwardly to permit the ap plication and withdrawal of the link with respect thereto when said link 15 has its major axis extending at right angles to the length of the coupler shank 13. rllhe rear of the cap 19 and the top of the projection 16 are spaced an amount which will just permit the free passage of the link through the opening between said cap 19 and projection 16. Said projection 1S additionally functions to prevent a rearward movement of the link 15 in a manner to prevent its accidental disengagement from the pulling lug. i
its shown in the figures, the link 15 is in its operative position with respect to the pulling lug 16, in which position it will be noted that the link is locked against vertical displacement and locked against rearward displacement, and, as a matter of fact, locked against any accidental displacement with respect to the pulling lug 16. The only way that said link 15 may be disengaged from said pulling lug is by sliding said link around the pulling lug until its major axis is at right angles with respect to the length of the coupler shank 13, whereupon the link 15 may be raised vertically to be freed from the pulling lug i6 and its locking cap 19. @t course, the position ot the link under normal operating conditions Would prevent such a oisengaging movement accidentally.
