Description

rammed July 31 1928,
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
EINAR KROMANN, OF ODENSE, DENMARK.
CABLE SOCKET FOR ACCUMULATORS.
Application filed May 26, 1927, Serial No. 194,492, and in Denmark January 31, 1927.
The invention concerns a cable socket for 4 accumulators, particularly automobile accumulators. The arrangement of the ordinary types oi, cable sockets involves several difiiculties; among other disadvantages, they come loose, form bad contacts andare difficult to fit on ,and take off, owing to the efi'ect of the acid on the metal. As the accumulator cannot withstand any great shock or vibration the removal of a cable socket which has become firmly attached might damage the accumulator. The aim of the invention is to remedy this defect, and accordingly the cable socket is formed of two parts, a box-shaped portion, to which the cable itself is secured, and a nut-shaped plug. On the said plug being screwed into the box carrying the cable, the cable socket box, which has a conical bore, will at the same time press firmly against the pole pin by virtue of the thread it cuts on the top conical extremity ofthe pole of the accumulator, whereby a good contact is formed between the cable socket and the pole pin at two points. The cable socket is both removed and fitted on by merely turning the plug and without the use of special tools. If the pole pin is smeared with a grease of some consistency, the connection is always kept free from the effect of acid, and atthe same time it will be very firmly secured 7 under all circumstances.
The invention is shown by way of example in the drawing, in which Fig. 1 shows in section the cable socket, viewed from the side, fixed in position on an accumulator pole.
Fig. 2 shows the cable socket separately.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the cable socket box, fitted to an'accumulator pole, with the plug removed.
a is one of the pole pins of the accumulator, which has a lower threaded portion for a cap-nut b. On the top conical extremity of the pole pin, which is without thread, is disposed a box c which has a lower conical bore (1, which corresponds with the cone of the pole pin, said-box c having on the side. a casing or a tubular support 6 of a known form for holding the cable; The cable socket .box a has on the inner cylindrical side a thread 9 for an-externally threaded plug k, the top of which has any desired angular form to correspond with the ordinary screw spanners, or it may be provided with wings 2'. In the plug is plug and the pole pin is inserted a conical drilled member is which is threaded, the pitch of its thread being slightly more than the thread on the outside 'of the plug. If the plug it is screwed into the cable socket box, it will cut a thread on the conical extremity of the pole pin with the screw-cut drilled member is and at the vsame time, in order that the plug may be screwed firmlyonto the pole pin, it will force the cable socket box a a'little lower on the pole pin, whereby the conical side of the bore d is pressed firmly against the pole pin.
Firm contact is thus formed between the plug it and the box 0, also the pole pin, at
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut is 1. A cable socket for accumulators comprising in combination a box member having an upper screwed bore anda lower bore suitable for fitting over the pole pin of the accumulator, an externally threaded plu to engage the upper screwed, bore of the lm means for revolving the plug and a screwthreaded' ,bore' within the plug which is adapted to simultaneously cut a thread on the pole pin when same is screwed into the upper end of the screwed box member, thereby firmly holding the box against the pole pin. cable socket for accumulators comprising in combination a box memberhaving an upper screwed bore and a. lower conical bore suitable for fitting over a conical pole pm of an accumulator, an externally threaded plug to engage the upper screwed bore of the box, means for revolvingthe plug and a conical screw-threaded bore within the plug which is adapted to simultaneously cut a thread on the pole pin when same is screwed into the upper end of the screwed box member thereby firmly holding the box against the pole pin 50 that the conicalbore rests against the whole periphery ofthe pole pin.
3. A cable socket for accumulators comprising in combination a box member having screw-threads of greater pitch than its external threads and the corresponding threads in the bore-0f the box which bore is adapted to simultaneously cut a thread on the pole pin when the same is screwed into the upper end of the screwed box member, substantial- 1y as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. I
