whereby the tappets of valve in head motors can be quickly and accurately adjusted.
- Further objects of the invention are to provide a tool of this character which can be easily and quickly applied to the adjusting screws and manipulated to loosen and turn the same the required amount, which enables the proper clearance to be accurately obtained, which will facilitate the obtaining of 'a uniform adjustment of all of the tappets on a'motor,r and which has a compact and convenient arrangement of parts.
While one particular embodiment of the invention is shown and described for illustrative pur oses, it will be understood that many modi cations' and changes can be made in the particular proportions and minor details of construction with-out departing from the, spirit of the invention.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a valvev tappet adjustin tool which is constructed in accordance wit the invention, showing the same as operatively applied to a rocker arm.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the upper end of the tool.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated on all of the views of the drawingl by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a conventional rocker arm which is pivotally mounted at a point between its ends on a rocker arm shaft 2 which extends longitudinally of the motor (not shown) and is of the usual and well known construction.

against the upper surface of the rocker arm to lock the screw in an adjusted position. This is the conventional form of rocker arm 'forf use in connection with valve in head motors and no claim to novelty is based thereon.` Y,
The tool includes a sleeve 7 which is formed at one end thereof with a polygonal socket portion 8 adapted to tit over and en- .gage the jam nut 6. Handle members 9 project laterally from opposite sides of the sleeve and provide a means for forcibly rotating the same to loosen or tighten the jam nut as may be desired. The innerends of the handle members extend through openings in opposite sides of the sleeve and are threaded in a. collar 10 which is arranged Within the sleeve. i
Extending through the sleeve and projecting from the end thereof which is remotel from the socket 8 is a `stem 1 1. The end of the stem Within the sleeve is formed with a bit portion 12 which is adapted to engage the kerf at the end of the adjusting screw 4, while the end of the stem which projects from the sleeve has a knurled finger piece 13 applied thereto. A coil spring 14 is arranged within the sleeve and surrounds thc stem, said spring being interposed between the collar 10 and a shoulder or'transverse pin 15 on the stem, so that thefspringfnormally tends to slide the stem longitudinally through the sleeve and force the bit12int0V engagement with the adjusting screw.'
A head 16 isrotatably mounted on=the projecting end of the stem 11, said head being formed With a skirt portion 16 which extends over the sleeve 7 and having the opposite end thereof suitably recessed to receive an adjusting collar 17 which is also rotatably mounted upon the stem. The head 16 is provided with a suitable detent such as the ball 18 which is adapted to yieldably engage a depressionor seat 19 in one side of the stem. The ball is shown as engaged by y a spring 20 which is held in position by means of a screw 21. In a similar manner the adjusting collar 17, is provided with a spring detent such as the ball 22 which is adapted to engage a seat 23 formed in one side of the stem 11. The two seats 19 and 23 are arranged in longitudinal alignment on the stem, being suitably spaced for en-y gagement with the respective spring detents. The ball 22 is shown as engaged by a spring '24, the outer end of which has a sliding engagemtnt with an adjustin ring 25 which is rotatably mounted on the ead 16, the end of the head bein suitably rabbetted to receive the ring. screw 26 extends through the adjusting ring25 and engages the adj usting collar 17, said screw passing through a` slot 27 which is formed 1n the head 16. The projecting end of the screw forms a {iner piece by means of which the ring can ge rotated.
In the use of the tool the socket 8 at the end ofthe sleeve-7 is applied to the jam nut 6, n and the latter loosened by rotating the sleeve. The bit 12 at the lower end of the stem 11 is brought into engagement with the adjusting l screw by the action of the spring 14, and the operator then grasps the knurled finger piece 13 and rotates the stem until, the end of the rocker arm is brought into a firm engagement with the valve stein. It is then desired to slightly loosen the screw in order to provide a ycertain definite but slight clearance between the valves stem and the rocker arm, this clearance being'usually somewhere between .004 of an inch and .008 of an inch. It is necessary that this adjustment be made with accuracy and that the adjustment on all of the valves of thel motor be uniform,l and the present tool provides a means for .obtaining the proper adjustment with precision. When the adjusting screw is tightened, to
i bring the rocker arm into a firm engagement with the valve stem, the head 16 is positioned on the stem with the ball detent 18 thereof in engagement with the seat 19. The adjusting collar 17 has been previously rotate-d a predetermined amount so that the ball detent 22 thereof has been moved out of engagement with the seat- 23. The exact amount of this rotation of the adjusting collar 17 is determined by the amount of clearance which is -desired between the rocker arm and valve stem. may be desired, and by using 'the sameadjustment for all of the valve tappets on the motor they will all be left with exactly the same clearance. The tool has a compact arrangement, and can be easily carried in the iand and quickly placed in operative posiion.
If desired, a lcoil spring 30 may be arranged in the upper end of the slee-ve 7, and one end of the? spring connected -to the head 16, while the other end is connected to the sleeve. This spring will operate to return the head to zero position with the ball 18 sea-ted in the recess 19 after each operation of the device.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
l. A valve tappet adjusting tool, including a socket member adapted to engage the jam nut, means for rotating the socket member to turn the jam nut, a stem rotatable within the socket and having a bit at the end thereof adapted to engage the adjusting screw, and means assoclated with the stem for enabling a preselected amount of backward rotation to be imparted thereto to obtain a predetermined clearance in the valve mechanism.
2. A valve tappet adjusting tool, including a socket member adapted to engage the 'am nut, means for rotating the socket memer to turn' the jam nut, a stem rotatable' Within the socket member and formed with a bit adapted to engage the adjusting screw, and detent means associated with the stern for enabling a preselected amount of backward rotation to be imparted thereto independently of th-e socket member to obtain the desired clearance in the valve mechanism.
3. A valve tappet adjusting tool including a socket member adapted to engage the jam nut, a stem rotatable within the socket member and formed with a bit adapted to engage the adjusting screw, a head on the stem,
-an adjusting sleeve rotatable on the stem,
cooperating detent elements on the stem and sleeve, and means for setting the detent ele-- ment of the sleeve at a predetermined position in the path of the detent member on the stem, whereby the detent members will engage each other when the stem has been turned backward a predetermined amount to obtain the desired clearance in the valve mechanism.
4. A valve tappet adjusting tool, including a socket member adapted to engage the jam nut, a stem rotatable within the socket member and formed with a bit adapted to engage the adjusting screw, a head rotatable on the stem, means for holding the stem in a certain osition with respect to the head, an adjusting sleeve mounted on the stem, cooperating detent elements on the stem and sleeve, and
means for setting the sleeve with the detent sleeve rota-table on the stem, cooperating de.
tent elements on the stem and adjusting sleeve, the detent element on the stem having a liXed relation with respect to the detent means of the head, and means for setting the sleeve with the detent elementthereof held in a predetermined position in the path of the detent element of the stem, whereby the detent elements.will engage each other when the stem has been rotated a sucient amount to obtain the desired clearance in the valve mechanism.

A valve tappet adjusting tool including a socket member adapted to engage the jam nut, a stem rotatable within the socket member and formed with a bit adapted to engage the adjusting screw, a head rotatable on the stem, means for holding the head in a certain position on the stem, an adjustin sleeve rotatable on the stem, a ring rotata ly mounted on the head and operatively connected with the sleeve, cooperating detent elements on the sleeve and stem, respectively, and means associated with the ring for rotating the sleeve to set the detent element thereof at a predetermined position in the path of the detent element o 'the sleeve, whereby the two detent elements will engage each other when the stem has been rotated a suiieient amount to obtain the desired clearance in the valvemechanism.
7. A valve tappet adjusting tool, including a socket member adapted to engage the jam nut, a stem rotatably mounted within the socket member and formed with a bit adapted to engage the adjusting screw, a head mounted on the stem, means for holding the head at a certain position thereon, an adj usting sleeve rotatable on the stem, the` head having one end thereof recessed to receive the sleeve and the said end of the head having a slot therein, a ring rotatable on the head, a fastening member-connecting the ring to the sleeve and operating within the slot, cooperating detent elements on the stem and sleeve, respectively, and means associated with the ring for turning the sleeve to set the detent element thereof in a predetermined position in the path of the detent element of the sleeve, whereby the two detent elements will engage each other when the stem has been rotated a. suiicient' amount to obtain the desired clearance in the valv mechanism.
8. A valve tappet adjusting tool, including a stem provided with means for engaging the adjusting screw, an adjusting sleeve rotatable on the stem, coo erating detent elements on the stem and s eeve, respectively, and means for selectively presetting the sleeve with the detent element thereof in a predetermined position in the pathof the detent element of the stem and in advance thereof whereby the two detent elements will engage each other when the stem has been rotated a predetermined amount.
9. A valve tappet adjusting tool including a stem provided with means for engaging an adjusting screw, detent meansfor checking the rotation of the stem, and means for selectively presetting the detent means to become operative upon a predetermined rotation of the stem.
10. A valve tappet adjusting tool including a socket member adapted to engage the j am nut, means for rotating the socket member to turn the jam nut, a stem rotatable Within the socket and having a bit at the n end thereof adapted to engage theadjusting screw, a yieldable connection between the stem and the socket member for yeldably holding the stem in a certain position relative to the socket member, and means for enabling a preselected amount of rotation to be imparted to the stem from the said position independently of the socket member to obtain a predetermined clearance in .the valve mechanism.
