JOSEPH W. DYSARD, OF MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEED- COVERING ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,155, dated J une 8, 1875; application filed May 1,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. DYSARD, of Michigan City, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Weed-Covering Attachments for Plows, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved device, shown as attached to a plow-beam. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, and of a plow to which it is attached. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same, the bar and wheel being shown raised, and the plow-beam being shown in cross-section through the line as m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved attachment for plows, to enable the weeds, whether short or tall, to be thoroughly covered, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention consists in the wheel, the adjustable bent and curved bar, the hinged plate, and the clamp, in combination with each other, to adapt the device to be attached to the beam of a plow, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the beam, B the mold-board, and O the handles, of a plow, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. D isa wheel, which is designed to run in the furrow last plowed, and which is pivoted to the end of a bar, E, which is curved to correspond with the position of the furrowslice as it is being turned by the mold-board B. The upper end of the bar E is bent to the rearward nearly at right angles, is flattened, and has a number of holes formed in it to receive the bolt by which it is secured to the plate F, so thatit may be adjusted as may be required. The plate F is hinged at its inner end to the flanged end of the base of the angular plate G, that fits upon the under and the mold-board sides of the beam A. To the upper edge of the vertical part of the angular plate G is attached, or upon it is formed, a bolt, which passes up through a hole in the plate H, and has a hand-nut screwed upon its upper end. The plateH is placed upon the top of the beam A, and has a longitudinal slot formed in it to receive a bolt formed upon, or attached to, the upper end of the plate I, where it is secured by a handnut. The plate H has a transverse slot formed in it, leading from the outer end of the said longitudinal slot to the edge of the said plate, so that the plate H can be swung said plate Gr, so that by removing the wedge.
J, and throwing back the plate H, the plate I may be detached and the entire clamp removed from the plow-beam A. To the upper edge of the vertical part of the plate G is pivoted a catch-hook, K, to catch upon the upper edge of the plate F, or upon a toe formed upon said upper edge, to hold the bar E suspended when turned up, substantially as herein shown and described.
To the rear end of the upper part of the bar E is attached a lever, L, for convenience in raising and lowering the barE when required, and which is so formed that it may also be used as .a wrench for loosening the nut of the bolt that secures the said bar E to the plate F.
By this construction the bar E, as the plow is drawn forward, will bend down the grass, Weeds, and stubble that may be upon the furrow-slice longitudinally with the furrow, so that they may be wholly covered.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The wheel D, the adjustable curved and bent bar E, the hinged plate F, and the clamp G H I J, in combination with each other, to adapt the device to be attached to the beam of a plow, substantially as herein shown and described.
