The object of the present invention -is to provide a simple and cll'ective device for overcoming the annoyance and discomfort vusually experienced by a person receiving'a shampoo, on account of the water and soap running down the face and getting into the eyes, ears, nose and mouth.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be I'i readily applied to shed the. water and'soap and thus protect the face, and which has improved supporting means for holdingit se- ,curely in an operative position and preventing it from becoming. displaced during the 15 Shampooing operation.
` A further object of the invention is to provide a shampooshieldhaving straps on the inner face thereof opposite the lportions.
ofthe shield adapted yto extend oven and protect the ears; such straps being so, ar-
ranged as to elfectively engage the ears of v -companying drawingspin whichl Flgure l is an inside face view of the shampoo shield in its inoperative or flat position. f
Fig. 2 is a plan View showing vthe position which the parts would occupy when applied. Fi 3 is a side elevation illustrating the application of the device and showing it in 'an 'operativepositiom a portion being broken away toillustrate the 'engagement of the strap with the ear.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed view of a portion of the shield.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed Vsectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. .6 is an enlarged detailed sectional View taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
My improved shampoo shield comprises a body' 1 of suitable flexible, waterproof material, such as celluloid. The body is pref-' thereof, as shown. In the prefer-redemlheld by the stitching 3., While such an arbe flexed Vlongitudinally `to-conform to the usci-s head, with the intermediate portion htting the forehead and the end portions lit- .ting the .sides of .the head and extending over the' ears. The edges of the' body are m preferably covered with a'binding 2 embracing tlle vmargin of both faces of the body and stitched in position as indicated at 3, so as to protect such edges and prevent them from injuring the user when the devicel 1s applied. Q
Extending across thel inner face of the body opposite the respective cnd portions thereof are flexible straps 4.' Each strap is connected to the body at points spaced apart both in the direction of the length and in the direction of the width 'of thel body, so that one of such points of connection is located below and nearer the adjacent extremity of the body than the other point.
The lines of attachment of the straps thus extend diagonally across the respectlvecnd portions vof the body, and are inclined downwardly toward the respective extremities bodiment of the invention the straps extend l between the top and bottom edges of the bodyr and are secured thereto by having their ends inserted under the binding 2 and rangement has been found to be both simple and convenient, it will be understood that other suitable ways of securing the straps may be employed. L
By virtue of the lexibe construction of the bodyit adapted tonormally lie fiat when not in use, so as to occupy a minimum space andto be capablejof being conveniently stowed away. It will be noted that the straps 4 are of such a lengtlrthat they 95 are held substantially taut between their points of connection and lie flat against the corresponding face of the body when the latter is in its normal position. The straps are thus out ofthe way when the deyvice is not in use and are not likely to become! entangled with adjacent objects or to be'torn or pulled loose thereby. However, when the body is flexed to lit the head of the user, as above described, a certainamount of slack is provided in the straps, whereby to form loopls which may be readily engaged overt e ears of the user to support the shield and prevent itA fromV slipping 55 erably of elongated form and is adapted tov Cdownwardly out of operative position. It `110 dental displacement during the shampooing operation. Furthermore, this diagonal arrangement causes the straps to accommodate themselves without adjustment to dii'erent relative positions of the ears of different users. It is a well-known fact that the position of the ears varies somewhat in different individuals, and this peculiar-ity presents a problem in connection with the present invention. The diagonal arrangement of the straps meets this problem in a very simple and effective way and adds ma.-
terially to the range of usefulness of thel shield, so that it is capable of being applied to di'erent users without the necessity of being especially fitted or adjusted for thepurpose.
In order to further secure the shield in position, means-are also provided for connecting the extremities thereof at the back of the users head. This may be accomplished in various ways, as, for instance, by
attaching bands 5 to the respective extremities of the body l. lVhen the shield has been flexed to iit the head and the straps 4 engaged. with the ears, these bands are drawn together and tied, as indicated at 6.
The tension of the bands should be sufficient to hold the upper edge of the body of the' shield tightly against the head, so as to pre-l vent the water and soap from flowing down bpdy'of the shield will pro'ect downwardly and outwardly away from t 1e head and thus serve to shed the water and soap and prevent the same from running into the eyes, ears, nose and mouth of the user.
It will thus be seen that I have provided an extremely useful article, which may be readily 'applied toy protect the face, which is sanitary 1n construction and may be safely employed by different users, which is securely held in position by simple and elective means, which is not likely to get out of order, and which may be easily 'and cheaply manufactured.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:- l. A shampoo *shield comprising a flexible body adapted to tit the forehead of a user with its end portions/extending rearwardly over and protecting the ears, ear-engaging straps carried by the respective end poitons of said body on the inner face thereof, each "each strap being secured to the body at spaced pointsin a line inclined rearwardly and downwardly, and means for connecting the ends of said body.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
JULIA EPPERS' SHAEFFER.
