J. E. BLAN WATER HEATER Filed Nov. 20, 1922 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 lll Patented May 26, 1925 UNITED STATES 1,539,039 PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH EDWARD BLANDING, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF NINE- TWENTIETHS T0 IDA FRANCES WATER Application filed November To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH EDWARD BLANDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Water Heater, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water heaters, and more particularly to Water heaters wherein electric energy is employed as the heating medium.
Another object of the invention is to provide a water heater of the instantaneous type wherein the water will be heated on its passage from the water supply, to the spigot or discharge pipe.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings: F igure 1 1s a front elevatlonal view of a heater constructed in accordance with the present invention, the cover plate thereof being removed.
Figure 2 1s a sectional view taken on line 52-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the heater.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the .casing of the water heater which is provided with a lining 6, formed of asbestos or the like material to confine the heat from the resistance coil to be hereinafter more fully described, within the casing.
A water inlet pipe is indicated at 7 and has connection with the head 8 as through the union 9, which is held to the head 8 as by means of the collar 10. The head 8 is provided with a recessed portion 11 to accommodate the upper end of the pipe 12, while the lower end of the pipe 12 is disposed in the recessed portion 13 forming a part of the head 14. The head 14: is in communciation with the pipe 15, as through the lpipe l6 and union 17, which union 17 is also eld to the head associated therewith by the collar 18.
PECK, OF GROTON, CONNECTICUT.
HEATER.

indicated at 21 is positioned on the pipe 12 and supports the resistance coil .22 which extends throughout the length of the core 21. As shown, the resistance coil is in circuit with a suitable source of electric supply to the wires 23 and 24 at the upper end thereof, while the lower end of the coil'is in circuit with the wire 25 forming the negative 1 of the circuit. I
Disposed within the heads 8 and 1 1, and communicating with the interior of the casing 5, isa pipe 26 through which air may pass as it becomes heated to heat the water passing through the pipe 12. It might be further stated that the wires that control the electric circuit may be controlled by any suitable form of switch to cause the electric current to pass through the resistance coil 22, heating the interior of the casing as well as the pipe 12.
As the water flows through the pipe 7, and coil 19, it will be seen that the same is heated by the electric current passing through the resistance coil 22.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a water heater, acasing, a pipe supported within the casing, a pipe housing the first mentioned pipe and spaced therefrom to provide a passageway, a. water supply pipe leading into the casing and including a coiled portion, said coiled portion being disposed about the first mentioned pipes and arranged in spaced relation therewith, one end of the coiled portion extending downwardly and having communication at the upper end and providing an exhaust for the passageway, and an electric heating coil positioned around the pipes and disposed within the coil to heat fluid passing therethrough. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto 'aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH EDWARD BLANDING. Witnesses:
