J. HORRIDGE Y MACHINE FOR COMBING COTTON, WOOL, AND THE LIKE Filed Feb. 12, 1924 ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 21, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JAMES HORRIDG-E, OF 131311.559151 ENGLAND, ASSEGNO'R T0 JOHN HETHERNGTON AND SONS LILIITED, OF VULCAN WORKS, ANCOATS, IYIANCHESTER, ENGLND.
MACHINE FOR CGMBING COTTON, WOOL, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed February l2, 1924.
To JZ y207mm 'it may concern:
Be it known that JAMES Honnmon, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Bolton, .in the county of Lancaster. Eng- 5 land, has invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Combing Cotton, llool, and the like, of which the fol.- lowing is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in l machines for combing. cotton, wool and the like and has for its object to provide means for imparting to the top detaching rollers a radial rocking or oscillating movement about the centres of their respective bottom rollers, and also improved means for weighting said top detaching rollers.
In the accompanying drawing, which is a side elevation of mechanism constructed according to the present invention 1 represents the nipper shaft of a combing machine, and upon said shaft is keyed a lever 2 or it might be a cam or any other known means of effecting a reciprocating movement to which is connected one end of a link 3 the 25 other end of which is adjustably connected to the end of the lever 4 by means of a stud` 3a adapted to slide in a slot 4al in said lever.
The lever 4 is mounted upon a shaft 5 and also secured upon said shaft 5 is a series of short levers 8, two of said levers 8 being used for each combing head and pivotally connected to each of said levers is a weight lever 9 which is connected by a link 11 with a lever 12 pivoted at 12a to the frame of the machine and from which lever the weight- 10 is'suspended by means of a hook 18.
Notches 12b in the lever 12 are provided for the hook 13 in order to allow of adjustment of the weight applied to the rollers to suit various cottons, weights of lap and the like. i
Formed integral with the arm 9 is a head 14 provided with bearings or notches 14a adapted to rest upon the journals of the front top detaching roller 15 and provided with a vertical notch or slot 14h in which the journals of the middle top detaching roller 16 are adapted to slide.
The roller 16 is weighted by means of a spring 17 which acts upon a saddle 18 bearn ing on said roller 16, and in order to relieve the said roller 16 of the pressure of the spring 17, the saddle 18 may be raised from oil' the roller 16 against the action of serial No. 692,445.'
said spring 17 and swivelled about the centre 18. Y
The back top detaching roller is weighted by means of a lever 21 through the spring 22 secured to the frame of the machine by means of a clip or the like 23 and in order to relieve the roller 2O ofpressure the lever` 21 may be swivelled about its fulcrum 2la until the spring 22 acts upon said lever 21 in such manner that it is retained in the ol position.
In order to adjust the range of oscilla-y tory movement imparted to the rollers 15 and 16 the following means are employed.
Upon the lever 4-is furnished an eXtension which is so formed as to present two flat surfaces or shoulders 6 and fixed upon the shaft 5 adjacent to said lever y4. is a plate 7 provided with a radial slot 7a in which is adaptedrto slide a bolt or the like 4b upon the lever 4 and also upon said plate 7 are provided two set screws 7b adapted to impinge upon the said flat surfaces 6 of the lever 4 in such manner that as said lever 4 is actuated bythe link 8 said lever 4 engages with the plate 7 and thereby oscillates the shaft 5. i
By adjusting the set screws 7b the rela-v tive position of the plate 7 to the lever 4 and consequently the relative position of the detaching rollers to the top comb or nippers may be varied on each and every head of the machine at one and the same time.
In order to vary the length of the stroke of the lever 4 the edective length of said lever 4 may be altered by adjustingthe stud 3a in the slot 4a of said lever.
`When it is desired to relieve the arm 9 and the roller 15 of theweight 10 the lever 12 may be raised until the pin or projection 12c upon said lever 12 engages with a hook 24 suspended from the shaft 5.
In operation the nipper shaft v1 receives an oscillatory mot-ion which .is imparted through the link 3 to the levers 4 and 8, the arm 9 and the bracket 14 to the front and middle top detaching rollers 15 and 16 which thus receive a radial oscillating movement about the centres of their respective bottom. rollers 25 and 26. n
From the foregoing it will be seen that we have provided a lever carrying the bearings for the top detaching rollers which has an entirely free floating movement whereby the rollers will be oscillated in a plane approximately at right angles to their axes of rotation.
It Will be understood that the details of construction of the device may be modified Without departing from the principle of the invention.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a combing machine having a series of top detaching rollers, the combination of a ioating lever exerting pressure on said detaching` rollers and adapted to impart an oscillatory movement to said rollers, and means for imparting` a floating` movement to said lever.
2. In a combing` machine, the combination of a floating,` lever, a plurality of top detaching rollers mounted in bearings carried by said lever, means for evertingr downward pressure on said lever, and means for imparting a loating movement to the lever thereby to oscillate the rollers in a plane at right angles to their axes oit rotation.
3. In a combing machine, the combination of a lioating lever, an oscillatory member pivotally connected to one end of said lever and adapted to impart a floating movement thereto, a plurality of top detaching rollers mounted in bearings carried by said lever, and adjustable means for exerting downward pressure on said lever.
4. In a combingmachine, the combination or' a floating lever, an oscillatory member pivotally connected to one end of said lever and adapted to impart a floating movement thereto, a plurality of top detaching rollers mounted in bearings carried by said lever, adjustable means for exerting' downward pressure on said lever, and means for adjusting the pivotal connection between said oscillatory member and lever thereby to vary the floating` movement of the lever.
5. In a combing machine, the combination of a floating lever, a plurality of top detaching rollers mounted in bearings carried by said lever, weighted means pivotally connected with said lever for exerting downward pressure thereon, means for varying the pressure on said lever, and means for imparting a floatingmovement to said lever thereby to oscillate the rollers.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JAMES HORRIDGE.
