'llhis inventlon relates Vto internal combustion engines and has for its object to provide a simple and eective means of operating the fuel pump for injectingfuel to the engine.
The invention4 further consists in the im-4 16 provements hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims. Y This invention will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying clrawings'in which: A Figure -1 isa front elevation, partly in section, of an improved two-stroke cycle internal combustion engine constructed according to this invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross section of the improved engine; and
Figure 3 is a partial sectional view of a detail.
In the illustrated example the improved two-stroke cycle internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder 1 cooled by vcirculation of water or air and cooling ribs, with admission and exhaust ports. In this cylinder there works a piston 2 provided with packing rings for making a .tight joint between the piston and the cylinder. `Attached to the piston 2 is a connecting rod 3 sliding in a jointing member 4'itted in a distributor 5. .This distributor 5, preferably oi cylindrical form, is moved by the action of the motion of the connecting rod 3 in a baseplate 6 provided with suction ports 7 for ysucking air or gas into the .piston 2 which is open at its lower end, andA also with delivery ports 8 for'delivering said air or gas into a receiver' 9 and thence into the cylinder 1. f
An injection pump 12, if required, is driven by means 'of a small rod 10 acting as a plunger fixed in the longitudinal axis of the distributor 5, and abutting with its outer end against a lever 11 which drives the injection pump 12 directly. A pipe 13 connects the pump 12 to the top of the cylinder l :for the purposexof allowing of the injection of the carburettng medium into the said cylinder by means of a spreader jet 14. The latter may be arranged at any desired point in the cylinder. The stroke of the injection pump 12'1nay be regulated for example by means of a regulating cam 15 acting through the medium of the lever 11, or in any other manner.
The improved two-stroke cycle interna-l combustion engine thus constituted, operate in the following manner:
Itis assumedthat the engine'has started, and that the piston-is rising from its lower dead centre. The resulting suction caused on the underside of the piston will act to,
plate 6 (in which thedistributor 5 and the jointing member 4 are fitted in a gas-tight manner) into the collector 9. As the piston approaches the end of its down-stroke, it unv covers the exhaust port, and almost simultaneously the admission port through which -v the air .or gases stored in the'collector'9 pass into the cy inder. The same phenomena are repeated at the lower end of the down-stroke of the iston. f
At t e same time as the distributor 5, operated b the connecting rod 3, has o ened or close at the proper times the ports and 8,'the plunger 10 has, through the medium .of the lever 11, operated the injection pump 12 which by reason of the predetermined movements has injected the proper charge of carburetting medium througlh thev sprayer into the engine cylinder. T e amount of this'injection is' controlled by means l.of the cam 15 --which may be operated by hand or by a governor or 1n any other manner.
The engine also comprises ,anignition apparatus,-consisting for instance, of a magneto and sparking plug, or of a hot cylinder head, or other device for causing at the proper time the i ition of the carburetted mixture containe in the cylinder.
The improved engine may'comprise any, number o cylinders (one, two, three, four, five, six, etc., the collector 9 bein designed, in the case o a plurality of cylin ers, to diS-v tribute equally the charges of air or gas to4 slidable at right angles to the axis of said cylinder, a connecting rod passing through said sliding member and imparting thereto f a reciprocating movement, and a fuel pump operated bythe reciprocating movement of said sliding member, as set forth.
2. In an internal combustion engine having a cylinder and a piston, a sliding member` slidable at right angles to the axis of said cylinder, a connecting rod passing through a hole in said sliding member, a bellv crank lever operated by said-slidingmember, an a fuel injection pump actuated by Said bell crank lever, as set forth.'
3. In an internal combustion engine having a cylinder, piston, connecting rod and crankcase, a base plate separating the cylinder from the crank case, a sliding member in said base plate, a gas tight joint in said sliding member through which' the connecting rod passes, a bell crank leveractuated by said Sliding member, a fuel injection ump, .and 'a plunger in said fuel pump opgrated by said bell crank lever.
4. In an internal combustion engine working on the two stroke cycle having cylinders, pistons, and a crank case, the combination comprising a distributor' for each cylinder having two portstherein, a sliding member ,situated in said distributor, a sleeve mounted in said sliding member adapted to oscillate about an axis at right angles to the axis of the cylinder, a connecting rod sliding in said sleeve, a fuel pump actuated by the movement of saidvsllding member, and a collector common to all'the 'cylinders and communieating with one of the ports in each distrlbutor for receiving the air under pressure, as set forth. j
5. In an internal combustion engine working on the two stroke cycle having cylinders,
pistons, and a crank case, the combination -comprlsing a distrlbutor for each cylmder having two ports therein, a sliding member situated in saiddistributor, a sleeve mounted inv said j sliding member, a cyl'ndrical joint member mounted in said disgributor into which said sleeve lits so as to lscillate about a transverse axis, a connecting rod sliding inl said sleeve, a fuel pump actuated by the movement of said sliding member, and a collectorcommon to all the cylinders and communicating with one of the ports in each distributor for receiving the .air under pressure, as set forth.
.6. In an internal combustion engine working on the two stroke cycle having cylinders, pistons, and a crank case, the combination comprising a distributor for each cylinder in the form of a fixed cylindrical tube having two ports therein one end of said tube being open to the atmosphere, a collector in communication with .the other end of said distributor tube, a sliding piston in said distributor tube, a connecting rod ,passing through an oscillating sleeve situated in said sliding piston, and a fuel pump actuated by the movement of said sliding piston, as set forth.
7. In' a two stroke internal combustion engine having a cylinder, piston, connecting rod and crank case, a base plate separating the cylinder from the crank case having suction and delivery ports therein leading to the interior of the piston, a receiver communicating with said delivery port and with the cylinder', a sliding member operated by the connecting rod in said base plate for opening and closing said ports, a gas tight joint situated in said slidingmember through which the connecting rod passes, a fuel injection pump, a plunger in'said fuel pump, a bell crank lever for actuating the fuel injection pum plunger, and means on said slidingl memv er for actuating said bell crank lever.
