UNITED STATES MILLABI) L. HARVEY, OF SAVANNAH, GEGRGIA.
RAIL ANTICBEEPER.
Application filed March 3, 1924. Serial No. 696,712.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MILLARD L. HARVEY, a citizen of United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Anticreepers; and I do declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has reference to devices intended for holding railway rails against creeping and it is the object of such invention to provide a simple and inexpensive de vice, which in addition to holding the rails against creeping, will laterally brace them.
\Vith the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the application of a pair of anti-creepers to a railway.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view as indicated by line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Figures 4 and 5 are perspective the two sections of the anti-creeper.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral. 1 designates an elongated metal bar adapted to extend across the upper sides of two adjacent railway ties, to which it may be secured by spikes 2 passing through openings 3 in the ends of said bar. The in termediate portion of the bar is preferably thickened materially at its lower side, as indicated at 4:, thus providing abrupt shoulders 5 at the ends of the thickened portion, to abut the ties and hold the bar against movement with respect thereto.
The upper side of the bar 1 is provided with a plurality of transve se rectangular ribs 6 which are disposed in spaced parallel relation, for a purpose to be described.
An angle metal bar 7 is provided, having a vertical flange 8 adapted to-be secured by bolt 9 to the outer side of a railway rail, or to the outer sides of abutting rail sections. Ihe
views of horizontal flange 10 of the bar 7 is thicker than the flange 8 and is provided in its lower side with transverse parallel rectangular grooves 11 which snugly receive the ribs 6, the outer ends of said grooves opening through the outer edge of the flange 10, while the inner ends of said grooves terminate in abrupt shoulders 12 for contact with the inner ends of the ribs 6. By this association of parts, not only do the two bars 1 and 7 hold the rail against creeping longitudinally, but said rail is effectively braced against lateral movement or tilting. Obviously, the devices may be used at any desired intervals.
Preferably, though not necessarily, I use an inside brace plate 13 secured to the inner side of the rail by the bolts 9, and spiked to the ties as indicated 14, thus additionally bracing the rail.
As excellent results are obtainable from the details disclosed, they are preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made.
I claim 1. An anti-creeper comprising a bar adapted to extend across and to be secured against the upper sides of two adjacent railway ties, the upper side of said bar having a plurality of parallel transverse ribs with abrupt inner ends, and an angular bar having an upstanding flange adapted to be secured to a railway rail, said angular bar having also a horizontal flange to rest upon said flrst-named bar, the lower side of said horizontal flange having spaced transverse grooves snugly receiving the aforesaid ribs, the inner ends of said grooves terminating in abrupt shoulders for contact with the inner ends of said ribs.
2. A structure specified in claim 1, the intermediate portion of said first-named bar being thickened at its lower side to reinforce said bar, the ends of the thickened portion forming abrupt shoulders for contact with the railway ties.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
MILLARD L. HARVEY.
