Description

UNITED STATES AUGUST WERNICKE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CNIIN WORK-TABLES AND DESKS..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. llelSSZ, dated May 19, 1874; application filed April s, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST VERNIGKE, of the city, county, and State of N ew York, have invented a new and Improved Work-Table and Desk Combined; and I do hereby declare the following to be a fall, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a transverse vertical section of my invention when the table-top is folded down over the desk. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the saine when the table-top is raised and the desk drawn out.
Similar letters indicate corresponding part-s.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a foldingtop or work table inclosing an eX- tensible writing-desk, which also is folding, and is provided with a folding leaf, that, when raised, constitutes a desk for reading, the whole being combined in such a manner that each of the elements recited are embodied in one and the same article of furniture, while either can be laid bare or exposed for use with ease and facility.
The table frame or stand is provided with a case or receptacle, and, if desired, with one or more drawers.
In the drawing, the letter A designates an upright frame, on which is the top B of my table, this top being affixed to the frame by means of hinge -joints a, so that it can be swung or folded on and off the frame at will. C is the disk which is held and slides upon a leaf, D, that is hinged at b to the inside of the tabletop. This desk G is mortised or otherwise suitably arranged upon the leaf D, so that it is extensible and can be drawn ont to any desirable extent, as represented in Fig. 2.
Said extensible desk C is provided with a leaf, E, which is hinged at c, so that it can be raised into an angular position to receive and hold a book or paper, as shown, being propped or held up by a brace, F, or by other suitable means.
By shoving or sliding back the desk C on the hinged leaf D, and folding the whole within the table-top B, this top can be folded down on the frame A, so as to render the top fit for use as a work-table, as represented in Fig. l.
The table-top B may, if desired, be provided with a catch for locking the desk U in position.
Beneath the desk in the frame A is a case, Gr, and beneath this are drawers H, which latter may be put on or left off, as desired by the maker.
It is obvious that, if desired, ordinary tablelegs can be substituted for the frame A without departing from my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the hinged top B and hinged leaf D, the sliding desk C, having the hinged leaf E, substantially as described, for forming a combined work-table and desk, as set forth.
This specification signed by me this 25th day of March, 1874.
