Description
E. uuAlNTANcE & R. n. HALE.
TMll-Couplings. No.15'l053, Patented Mayl9,l874.
Y. ATToaNEs.
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICEo ELI QUAINTANCE AND REMUS D. HALE, OF TRANSITVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
SpecificationV forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,053, dated May 19, 1874; application led i .i March 14, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELI QUAlNTANcE and REMUS D. HALE, of Transitville, in the countjT of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tongue and Thill Coupling, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in a peculiar inode of supporting the shafts so that the end projection of the plates shall enter and be embedded in the rubber spring, and also in a novel mode of holding the rubber by a tongue projecting from the cross-bar of axle-clip.
ln the accompanying drawing,Figure l represents a vertical section ofthe axle and coupling wit-h the tongue attached, the section being on the line x x of Fig. 2. Fig. is a top or plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the axle; B B, the clips around the axle, which are formed with two jaws, C U,
` each, which jaws have holes, which receive the coupling T- journals of the tongue or shafts. These T- journals are on the iron plates D, which extend from the ends of the shafts or tongue, as seen. in Fig. 2.
In this example of our invention we showa tongue attached; but it will be seen that the ordinary thills or shafts may be attached in the saine manner, thus adapting the device to one-horse as well as to two-horse vehicles.
E represents the T-journal pin, the ends of which, F, form the journals in the jaws C C. One jaw of each pair is slotted from the top to the journal-hole, as seen at Gr Gr. The
plates D D, when the tongue or shafts are turned to an upright position, will pass through the slots and allow the tongue or shafts to be detached. Between the jaws and back of the journalpins I place pieces of india-rubber, H. These pieces of rubber are for the purpose of j nfeventing rattling, and are held in place by means of tongues I I of the clip-bars and the narrow ribs J J on the back side of the T- journal pins E. Then the tongue or shafts are in use, or in the position seen iu the drawing, it is impossible for them to become de tached. rlhe connection is strong and durable, and the vehicle runs without rattling or noise occasioned bj' the coupling. B v raising them to an upright position, as before stated, they are disconnected in a moment, and may be packed away in any convenient place.
The advantages of this arrangement are many, and must be obvious to all.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- AH, in the manner shown and described.
