UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
HELEN CAMPBELL, F YAKIMA, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRED GIR'I'ANNER, 01'! LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
AMUSEMEN '1 DEVICE.
Application filed March 1, 1922. Serial No. 540,133.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HELEN CA PBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yakima, in the county of Yakima and State of Washington, hav invented new "and use ful Improvements in Amusement Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an amusement device for children and particularly for younger children or babies that are at the age where they arebeginning to stand erect and to walk, the principal objects of my invention being to provide a relatively simple and practical device in the nature of a spring supported platform which carries a railing and which latter may be grasped by ahchild positioned on the platform and which is intended to yield or vibrate vertically under the movements and weight of the child.
A further object ofmy invention is to provide a device of the character referred to that may be easily and cheaply produced and which in addition to serving as an amusement device for children provides sim ple and efficient means whereby the child in play may obtain a mild degree of exercise.
With the foregoing and other ob'ects in view, my invention consists in the eatures of construction and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an amusement device of my improved construction;
Figure 2'is a cross section taken approximately on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view ofv the corner portion of a modified form of the device.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention, 10 designates a flat base member which may be formed of wood or metal and of any desired size and shape. This base member is adapted to rest directly upon the floor and secured to and projectingu wardly from said base member, and prefera ly at points adjacent its corners are vertically disposed rods 11. Arranged for sliding movement on the upper 7 portions of said rods are tubular members 12, the lower ends of which are seated in a platform 13 that occupies a plane a short distance above the base 10, said platform being yieldingly supported by a pluralit of compression springs 14. The upper en s of the tubular members 12 are connected at the sides and ends by small rails 15, preferably rods of wood or metal, or said rails may be composed of a flexible material, for. instance, soft cords or cables.
In the use of the amusement device, a child placed on the platform 13 and grasping the rails 15 may, by jumping up and down upon said platform, cause the same to yieldingly vibrate after the manner of a springboard, thus affording amusement to the child and at the same time providing a mild exercise for the childs limbs.
During the vertical movement of the platform and the tubular members 12, the lat-. ter slide vertically upon the posts 11. While I have shown the platform 13 as being supported by four springs and the latter positioned adjacent to the corners of the latform, it will be understood that the num er of springs and the arrangement thereof may be varied and the same result attained.
1n the modified construction illustrated in Figure 8, the platform 13 is shown as being provided with slots or notches 16, which latter receive the uprights 11, thereby providing 'a simplified form of guiding means for the platform 13 during its vertical vibratory movements. 7
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a relatively simple, practical and eflicient device that will provide amusement and mild exercise for children, and particularly younger children or babies that are just beginning to stand erect and to walk.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of m improved amusementdevice ma be ma e and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an amusement device, a base, a series of u rights on said base, a platform arranged or vertical movement between said uprights, springs between said platform and said base, and a railingon said platform, said railing being connected to said platform by tubular members sliding upon said uprights.
2. An amusement device comprising rigid uprights extending upwardly from the corners of the base, a platform having tubu lar members extending upwardly from its corners, said tubular members telescoping upon the uprights, springs between the platform and base, and rails connecting the upper ends of the tubular members.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HELEN CAMPBELL.
