Be it known that I, `JOI-IN BERG, a. citizen fof the United States, residing atChicago, in the county of Cook and 4State of Illinois. 5 `have inventedy a'newand useful Improvement in Electric Connecters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to electric connecters of the plug and socket type; and the primary object is to provide an improved connecter which can be cheaply manufactured, and which has provision for lsecurely connecting a conductor to a contact member with which the connecter is provided.
The invention 'is illustrated, in its pre-- ferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawing. in which- Fig. 1 represents an elevational view of a connecter constructed in accordance with the invention: Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same, the section being taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 5; Fig-.3, a view of a. contactscrew employed; Fig. 4, a section similar to Fig. 2, the screw being removed; Fig. 5, an
end view of the member shown in Fig. 4;`
and Fig. 6, a sectional view illustratinga modification of the member shown in Fig. 4.
The connecter1 comprises a member A which is of elbow form and which is composed of insulating material; and a clamping-Screw device B which serves as a. Contact member and which also serves to clampingly Secure the end of a conductor C in the member A.
The elbow A has an arm A provided with a taper bore 1 which receives the conductor C, and an arm A2 which constitutes a plug adapted to be received by the socket of an other connecter, the arm A2 having a bore 2 which receives the clamping-screw B. The bore 2 has an inner end portion 2a which is of angular form and has an outerpo-rtion 2b which is somewhat larger and of cylindrical form. At the orifice of the bore 2 is provided a countersink 2. The taper bore 1 intersects the portion 2a of the bo-re 2 near the innerlend and extends beyond the bore 2, thus providing a depression 1a adapted to receive the inner end of the conductor C. Thus, the inner ends of the bores are covered or blind ends. The conductor C is shown provided with an armor C which is received in the outer portion of the bore 1.
The socket portion A2 of the plug is shown equipped with studs 3 which are adapted to be connected with bayonet Slots in a. i companion connecter; These studs may be in the form of small pins which are inserted in small Sockets. provided therefor in the `.operation of molding the member A.
`The clamping screw device B comp-rises a screw member 4 and a tubular nut 5 which has threaded connection therewith. The member 4 has an angular shank-portion 4a which fits in the socket portion 2a of the bore 2, and has a. threadedstem 4b which receives the nut. The nut '5 is of cylindrical form and is threaded interiorly so as tov screw ontolthe stem 4b. The nut 5 has a. flange or head 5a, whichis provided with a slot 5b adapted to receive a screw-driver. The angular shank portion 4a of the member 4 is provided with a transverse perforation 4, through which the conductor C extends.
It will be understood, from Fig. 2, that when the nut 5 is turned onto the screw or bolt 4, the bolt will be drawn toward rthe nut. and will force the wire conductor C against the wall of the bore 1. Thus, the wire will be clampingly secured in position, and will be more or less flexed at the point where it crosses the socket portion 2a of the bore 2, so that the wire will be held very securely. The end portion of the nut 5 serves as a Contact member for the electrical circuit.
It will be understood from the foregoing that the elbow A, which is of insulating 90 material, may be molded without the necessity of introducing inserts; and thus it is possible to cheapen the operation of manufacturing the elbow and, at the same time, provide a better construction. y
In the modification shown in Fig. 6, A8 represents an elbow similar to the elbow A. In this case, instead of employing the insert studs 3, the socket portion of the elbow is equipped with a thin metal sleeve, or ferrule, 6, having the metal struck outwardly at diametrically opposite points, as indicated at 6a, thus providing the embossments or Studs adapted for connection with the bayonet slots of a companion connecter. In m5 this case, the sleeve 6 serves as a reinforcement for the plug portion of the elbow and will prevent injury to the composition lof which the elbow is composed.
The improved plug is admirably adapted 11 for use in situations where considerable stresses are apt to be exerted on the conductor, or where, from the nature of the use, it is desirable to especially insure a secure connection between the conductor and the contact member. rllhe improvement obviates the necessity of using an insert metal socket with clamping-screws for securing the conductor to the connecter.
Thile it is preferred to make the screw device B in the manner illustrated, that is, with the member 4 provided with an externallythreaded stem, and the member '5 provided with an interiorly threaded socket to receive said threaded stem, obviously the construction may be varied, if desired, it being understood that the important thing is to provide a two-part screw device which will serve as a means for clampingly securing `the conductor to the connecter, and establish electrical contact between the conductor and the contact member.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claim should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device of the character set forth comprising'a member of elbow form composed of insulating material and having one arm affording a plug provided with a bore having an inner end portion of angular cross section and having at its outer end a countersink, the other arm having a bore intersectingv'and crossing the inner end portion of said first-named bore, said bores having blind'inner ends, a screw in said first-men tioned bore having an angular head received in the angular portion of the bore, the head of said screw being provided with a transverse perforation, and a tubular nut journalled insaid iirst-mentioned bore and threaded on said screw, the extremity of said nut being provided with a flange rest ing in said countersink and said nut having a projecting portion adapted to serve as a contact member.
