Application filed January 4, 1923, Serial No. 610,659. Renewed February 26, 192e.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that a subject of the King siding at Sherbrooke, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Toothbrushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descripo Great Britain, re-
tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art toA whichit appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention pertains'to a *foun-l tain tooth brush and consists of improvements on Canadian Patent No. 197,488, of February 24th, 1920 and United States Patent No. 1,336,390, of April (ith, 1920.
In these patents, there is provided abrush handle in which is secured a plurality of bristles. The handle is constructed 1n such a manner as tov serve in a fountain brush, and is therefore more expensive than the usual brush handle. .lVhen the bristles have become worn it isnecessary to discard the entire device. Accordingly, it is au object of this invention to provide a handle adapted to receive a renewable bristle section so that when the bristles are worn a new section may be inserted without necessitating the Waste of the handle portion.
The patents also show a tube extending through the back of the brush and into the bristles. This tube remains open when the brush is not in use and thus gives rise to unsanitary results. In this connection, the present invention includes a cap adapted to close the open end of the tube when'de sired. According to the invention, the tube is made in the form of a hollow screw in-` sei-table through the back of the brush. In one side wall of the screw is formed an aperture adapted to register with the feed channel connecting with the reservoir in the brush handle.
Another feature of the invention is a novel supply cartridge adapted for insertion in the brush handle and edge provided with novel sealing means'which may readily be removed` to enable the flow'o'f cleans,
ing material. The invention is fully disclosed in the following description and in the accompany# ing drawings in which:-
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the device;
I, JOSEPH A. SAucuuY,
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal scction through the reservoirg/ Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section through theI back and bristle section;
Figure 4 is an enlarged section on the line 4 4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5'is a side elevation of the follower mechanism;
supply cartridge; C
Figure 7 is a section on the line 7--7 of Figure 2;
Figure 8 is a pei'spective View of the bristle section;
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the cai'- tridge;
Figure 10' is an enlarged longitudinal section taken at one end of the cartridge and on the `line 1010 of Figure 11; and Figure 11 is a section on the line 11-1101 Figure 10.
In these views, the numeral l indicates a brush handle, the body portion 2 of which is hollow and threaded on an extension l5 of the handle. The handle has a passage way of channel .3 extending from the hollow body to the back4. The back is provided with laterally curved portionsor iangcs 5 in which a bristle section 6 is adapted to'be inserted. These parts are ',so constructed that the bristle section will remain tightly in place, but can be'ireadily removed for renewal as required. A hollow screw 7 is passed through the back 4 andl section 6 and is provided in its wall with an opening 8 adapted to lcommunicate with the channel 3. The outer end of the screw is externally threaded as at 9 for the reception of a cap 10. This cap is applied when the brush is Figure 6 is a longitudinal section of the not in use, thus preventing the How of maf v terial when not required and further mainwith the inner end of the channel The opposite end of the cartridge is' closed by means ot a cap 16 threaded therein and formed with a central aperture 17. This aperture and that in the nipple 14 are closed by means of pivoted flaps 18 of suitp by apointed instrument.
able flexible material. It will-be understood that the cartridge is initially filled by removal of the cap 16 and then closed by the application of the same with the flap covering the aperture.
The 'hollow portion 2` is internally threaded at its outer end as at 19 for the reception ot' an externally threaded closure plug 20. A threaded feed screw 21 is held by the plug and adapted to project into the hollow portion 2. The outer end of the screw has fixed thereto a milled disk 22 by means ol which it may be manually rotated. The screw is -also provided with a collar 23 which rests against the inner face of the plug for retaining the screw in position. A follower 24 is adapted to travel on the screw and is of such circumference as to engage` the inner wall of the cartridge.
In filling the hollow portion 2, a cartridge 13 is inserted therein, the iaps 18 being previously moved away fr ouithe apertures The cap 16 is removed in order that the Jfeed screw may be passed therethrough and the follower 24 applied to the Sallie against the inner face ot' the cap. The plug 2() is threaded into the outer end of the'hollow portion and the device is ready for ,use in the manner pointed out in connectionl with the previousl patented devices. f
hile a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that various alteraitions in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the appended claims.
ing a channel formed therein connecting said aperture with the hollow body, and a follower body.
portion. a bristle section removably inserted in said back, 'a hollow screw passed through said back and bristle section and having an aperture in a wall thereof, said handle having a channel formed therein conncctinrr said aperture with the hollow body, a fo lower slidably mounted in said hollow body,` and a cap adapted to close the outlet end of said hollow screw. V
3. A fountain tooth brush comprising a handle including a brush. back and a hollow body, said handle having a channel formed therein connecting said hollow body portion with the back, a cartridge disposed within Said hollow portion, flaps of flexible material closing outlets in the ends of said cartridge, a feed screw passed into said cartridge through the outer end thereof, and a follower mounted on said feed screw and engaging the inner Wall of the cartridge.
