Description

Patented Mar. 9, 1926,
warren STATES THOMAS WALTER FRED, OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
DISPLAY TRAY.
Application filed February 7, 1925. Serial No. 7,641.
To all whom, it may concern Be itknown thatl, THOMAS VALTER Finn), a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Display Tray, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ii'nproven'ients in display trays for sample cases.
In the methods heretofore used, articles such as stockings or the li re, were handled and wrinkled so as to destroy their value as samples, which should always be attractive in appearance.
An important object of my inventionis to provide a device which will enable stockings and similar articles to be displayed and handled without affecting their appearance, attractiveness or value as samples.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of the above mentioned character which will display the stocking or other article to its best advantage.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which will be capable of displaying a great variety of styles, colors, etc., and afford a vivid contrast therebetween.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and wherein like characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the display trays in its displaying position,
Figure 2 is a plan View of one of the trays with the cover pulled back, and illustrating the position of the article when not being displayed,
Figure 3 is a detail perspective of one of the trays,
Figure 4. and,
Figure 5 is a detail sectional View through a portion of the tray.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a tray preferably rectangular in shape and formed from a sheet of cardboard 11, wood or other suitable material covered with a suitable fabric 12, as for example, velvet, of a soft color such as blue is an end elevation of the same,
or green, a reinforcing strip 13 extends across the back of the tray 10 adjacent one of its ends to also serve as. a hand hold.
sponding to the tray covering, and of the same color.
The articles to be displayed, illustrated as stockings S, are slipped under the straps 1 and securely held thereby, and preferably overlap each other, thereby allowing a. great many stockings to be. socured to one tray. These stockings are arranged in pairs of different styles and colors, the stockings in a pair being secured together at various points by means of threads of silk 15 the ends of which are raveled to form an attractive tuft of brightly colored silk.
It will be seen'that themajor portion of the stocking is arranged below the lower of the two elastic straps 14, and consequently, when the tray is held vertically, this portion of the stocking will dangle freely with the softlycolored cover 16 as a background. They may be handledat will, but will always retain their shape and attrac' tiveness, and cannot become rolled into balls, as has heretofore been the case. hen not in ut'e, the stockings are folded upon themselves, over the lower of the straps, as shown in Figure 2, and the cover 16 drawn over them, as shown in Figure 3. Suitable tags 17, or the like, indicate the brand of hosiery, manufacturer, etc.
The:e trays may be conveniently carried in any suitable case, the trays being adapted to be arranged one above the other in the case.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in thesize, shape, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to Patent is:
1. A stocking display tray comprising a stiff base, elastic straps secured thereto adjacent its top and bottom and adapted to protect by Letters I played, the niaj or portions o'fithestockings being tree and a ilexiblecover securedtorthe lower end otthe base and adapted to act as a supporting baekgroundfor the stockings when being displayed. 7 A
A stocking display tray comprising a stiff base, areinforcing and, gripping strip arranged on the rear side of said base and adjacent its topytransversely extending elast c straps secured to said base achacent its top and bottom but spaced therefrom and adapted to retain the-upper portion of the stockings to be displayed, the major portions of the stockings being free, and a fie ible-coverof substantially the same size and conliguration as the base, secured to the lower end of the base, the stockings being adapted to be folded about the lower elastic stra rand arran 'e'd "Wholl. u )on the base b P/ a the flexible cover being adapted to be normally arranged over the base so as tOzCOVQl' the stockings-but being adapted to dangle free .ly whenrin displaying position, and to act as a supporting background ior the tree ends of the stockings.
In testimony whereof I aiiix mysignaturc.
THOMAS WALTER FRED.
