Be it known ,that I, Avn: Jon-N L'UMAN, a citizen ofthe United States,v and a resident of Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and; State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvementin ,Door Bolts. of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates 'to improvements in door bolts' and has `particular reference to detachable means for locking a door` against opening `which is of particular advantage to travellers who desire an easily attachable and detachable rmeans for locking the door Aleading kto :their room against intruders.

lVhile l have shown only the preferred forni of the invention. it should be' under stood that various changes or modification-s may be made within the scope of the claims hereto attached with departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln Figure 1 is shown the usual door arrangement including upright studdings 1 which serve as a support for furring strips 2 nailed to the sides thereof and for the plaster 3 which may be secured thereto in any suitable manner well known in the art as by laths, not shown in the drawing. A stop 7 may be nailed to the inner face of the j amb :for the door 8 to lie against when the door is closed, the outer face 9 of the door being usually flush with the edge 11 of the door jarnb so that the casing 6 `projects beyond the plane of the closed door.
My locking means comprises-a guideway 12 consisting preferably of a sheet of nietal bent `into rectangular form with the end edges 18 disposed in confronting relation. 'llhfis guideway has yflanges 14 ext-ending from one end of the base thereof, the flanges being preferably coextensive with the thickness of the casing 6 so that they :niay lie against the inner edge of thecasing while teeth 16 project from 'the flanges inwardly and may be drivenv intol the crack between the casing and the door arab 1. The other enel of the guideway has a lip 17 extending therefrom which is perforated as shown at 18 and may be Vfastened to the casing by means of a screw 19 after the teeth have been driven into place. The guideway has an clement Q1 slidab'le therein, this element preferably consisting of a channel including' a web 22 and the `two flanges 23 and being diniensioned for sliding' engagement with the guideway with the handle 241 extending through a slot 26 in the top of the guideway so that the element 2l may be slid back and forth in the guideway by means of the handle.
The bolt 27 niay also be made of a lchannel shaped piece of metal corresponding in forni substantially to the element Q1 and has its inner end pivoted to the channel by means of a pin 28 at a line remote from the base of the guideway and from the casing. The inner corner 31 of each fiange 32 of the bolt is preferably rounded ofi' so as not to interfere with the operation described hereinafter. The inner end of the web 33 of the bolt is turned inwardly as shown at 34. and is connected by means of a spring 36 to the rear end 37 of the guideway in such a manner that the line along which the sprin pulls is closer to the base of the guideway or to the casing than the pin 28. The front face 38 of the bolt is preferably provided with a cushion member 39.
The. manner of using my locking means is as follows:
The base of the guideway is placed against the exposed face ot' the casing with the fiar ges 1l facing the edge of the casing and the teeth 1G are driven into the crack between the casing and the jamb so as to bring the tlange 1l into contact` with the edge of the casing, whereupon the screw 19 is inserte-:l through the perforation 18 in the lip 17 and threaded into the wood of the casingv so that the guideway is irmljy held against removal. To lock the door, it is 011157 necessary to push the handle Q1 tothe left which causes the bolt to project outwarc lj' and to turn on the pin 28 due to the action ofthe spring 36 which brings the end face 39 ot' the -bolt into abutting relation with the face oi' the door and prevents the latter from being opened. To unlock the door, the handle 24 is pushed baelrwardly whereupon the pin automatically retracts the bolt into the guideway, the spring 36 yielding sut'iciently to allow the bolt to be brought into alinement with the element 21 while the curved edge 31 rides on the corner of the guidewaj7 for bringing the bolt into alinement with the element 21. To detach the locking means, the screw 19 is threaded out'of the wood and a slight push on the guidewaj7 to the left, as viewed in Figure 1, disengages the teeth 16 from the casing.
I claim:
1. Locking means for a door having a casing framing the same and 'projecting beyond the plane of the closed door, comprising a guideway fixed to the casing adjacent the free end of the door and a bolt retractible therein having means associated therewith for turning the same around the edge ot the casing into abutting relation with the face oi' the door when the boltis projected.
Locking means for a door having a casing framing the same and projecting bevond the plane of the closed door, comprising guideway fixed to the casing adjacent the free end ot the door, a bolt slidable therein and spring means for retracting the same, the latter means being arranged to tnrn the bolt around the edge oit the casing into abutting relation with the tace ot the door when the bolt is projected.

Locking means for a door having a easing fra-ming the same and projecting beyond the plane of the closed door, comprising a guideway fixed to the casing adjacent the free end of the door, an element slidable therein having operating means extending through the Wall of the guideway, a bolt pivoted to the element along a line remote from the casing and elastic mears tending to retract the bolt engaging the same in proximity to the easing so as to cause the bolt to turn around the edge of the casing' into abutting 'relation to the face of the door when the said element is projected.
4. Locking means for a door having a casing framing the same and projecting bevond the plane of the closed door, comprising a guideway adapted to lie against the outer face'o'f the casing having a flange extending froin one end thereof adaptedy for contacting engagement with the edge of the casing, with teeth projecting from the end of the flange adapted to be driven into the casing material and means associated with the other end of the casing for preventing disengagement of the teeth, and means slidable in the guideway adapted to bebrought into abutting relation with the face of the door for preventing the opening of' the same.

outer face of the casing having a flange extending from one end thereotl adapted for contacting engagement with the edge of the casing, with teeth projecting from the end of the flange adapted to be driven into the casing material, and a lip extending from the other end of the guideWa-y adapted for fastening to the casing for preventing disengagement of the teeth from the latter and means slidable in the guideway adapted to be brought into abutting relation with the face of the door for preventing the opening of the same.

In a device of the character described, a guidewav, a bolt slidable therein and means associated therewith for turning the bolt at right angles to the guideway when the bolt is projected, comprising an element slidable in the guideway havingy the bolt hinged thereto at a line remote from the base of the guideway and elastic means tending to retract the bolt engaging the same near the. base of the guidewav.
