UNITED stares MICHAEL SIMONELLI, OF EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOK HOLDER.
Application filedJune 11, 1924. Serial No. 719,432.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIoI-IAEL SIMONELLI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of lhlassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a book holder which aims to provide a device of this nature having a foldable structure which is easy to operate, and one which is simple, efficient, and attractive in appearance when extended to an operable position. The device is adapted to support a book or the like in a convenient position 011 a desk or table so that the same may be conveniently read without the necessity of the reader holding the book. The device also embodies a source of illumination conveniently positioned so that the pages of the book are illuminated to advantage. The device also embodies a battery compartment located so as in no way to interfere with the operation and utility of the device.
With the above and numerous other ob jects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in an extended position,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device in a folded position,
Figure 3 is a plan view of the device in a folded position, a portion being shown in section taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4: is a vertical section taken substantially on the line H of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section through the battery container.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the body A is formed in two sections 1 and 2 slidably associated with each other, the section 2 being disposed on top of section 1 and provided with curved depending side flanges 3 for engaging the side edges of section 1. These sections 1 and 2 are substantially telescopically associated and section 2 is provided with an elongated slot 4 for receiving a headed pin 5 rising from section 1 thereby limiting the sliding movement of the sections. A pair of arms 6 are pivoted to one end of section 1 and a pair of arms 7 are pivoted adjacent the opposite end of section 2. The end of section 1 to which the arms 6 are pivoted is provided with an upwardly extending extension forming a stop or rest 8 for the book and also a stop for the arms (3 so as to hold them in an extended position in alinement with each other as is illustrated in Figure 1. The arms 6 are also provided with stops 9 risingtherefrom and legs 10 depending therefrom and terminating in curved feet 11. The arms 7 are provided with spring clips 12 so that a book may be rested with its central portion on the body and its covers resting on the arms 6 and 7 so that the clips 12 engaging the pages of the book will prevent them from turning over accidentally and at the same time hold the book in proper position on the device. The slidable or adjustable association of the sections 1 and 2 of body it allow the device to be adjusted to accommodate different sizes of books.
The end of section 2 adjacent the pivoted arms 7 is provided with an upwardly extending standard 14 supporting a source of illumination 15 preferably in the form of an electric socket and bulb from which extend the leads 16. This standard 1 1 is provided with a pair of apertured ears 17 one on each side thereof through which extends the propping device 18. This propping device is substantially U-shaped formation including the two legs 19 and the intermediate V-shaped portion 20 which acts as a stop for holding the legs in extended position as shown in Figure 1, when in this position the end of the V-shaped intermediate portion 20 abuts the standard. These legs 19 may be moved to the folded position as is indicated in Figures 2 and 3. It will thus be seen that a book may be supported in an inclined position and properly illuminated so as to be conveniently read without the necessity of the same being held by the reader.
An added feature of the invention is in the battery container indicated generally at B. This container includes a cylindrical housing 22 including closures 23 and 24. One of the leads communicate with the battery container B through a suitable switch 25 in order that the light may be turned on or off as desired.
When the device is not in use the arms 6 and 7 may be pivoted over the body as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. In order that arm 6 may pivot over the upper section 2, the end of section 1 to which they are pivoted is slightly offset so as to accommodate the thickness of section 2 as is indicated at 26 in Figure 2. The propping device 18 is foldable so as to lie alongside of the battery container and the body. The device when folded is compact so that it may be easily transported from place to place and if desired packed conveniently in a trunk or the like.
Although I have described the device with a certain degree of particularity, it is evident that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention an hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A device of the class described including a body formed of two telescopically said propping device and said arms being foldable in relation to the body.
2. A device of the class described including a body formed of a pair of telescopically associated sections, a pair of arms pivoted to one section, clips on said arms, a
second pair of arms pivoted to the other section, said latter section being provided with an upwardly projecting stop at its end for holding said arms in alinement with each other, said latter pair of arms provided with upwardly projecting book edge engaging stops and depending legs, and a propping device pivoted to said first named section.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MICHAEL SIMONELLI.
