Description

Nov. 10,1925. 1,561,256
5. A. LILLY BLADE SHARPENER Filld Jln. 17. 1923 Patented Nov. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT carica;
BLADE SHARPENER.
Application filed January 17, 1923.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD ASHLEY LiL-' LY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blade Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grinding or sharpening devices and has for its object to provide a knife sharpener formed of a double series of sharpener dises.
Another object of the invention .is to provide in a knife Sharpener formed of sharpener discs, discs having hubs or flanges projecting therefrom whereby they are held spaced apart from one another.
With the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear,
I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l, is a top plan view, partly in section, of my Sharpener;
Figure 2, is a side elevational view thereof; e
Figure 3, is a detail plan View of a sharpcner; and
Figure 4, is a section on line 4-4 thereof.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings, in which 1 indicates a blade sharpening device consisting of a base 2 having side walls 3 and 4, on the spaced apart bearing extensions 5, 6, 7 and 8, respectively, the members 5 and 7 being provided with opposing apertures 9 and 10, for the shaft or pin 11, and the members 6 and 8, having similar apertures for the shaft 12. Upon the shafts 11 and 12, are mounted a series of spaced apart cutting discs 13, and 14, of such a diameter that the edges of two series of discs interlap with one another at the longitudinal central portion 15, of the device. All of the discs 13 and 14 are similarly formed each one having an offset hub portion 16, on its side 17, and each having an annular intermediate flange 18, on its side 19. In mounting these discs upon the shafts 11 and 12, they are arranged in reverse position relative to one another so that two flanges 18 and 18 of the discs 13 and 13 Will Serial No. 613,142.
abut against one another and the hubs 16 and 16 of the discs 13 and 13a, will abut s one another. The depths ofthe hub 16 and flanges 18, are exactly the same so that each of the discs will be'equally spaced apart, the depth of said hubs and flanges being ap proximately one-half the thickness of the discs 13 and 14, so that the space between the discs 13, 13', 13a, etc. will be sufficient to accommodate the inwardly projecting peripheries 20, of the discs 14, and likewise the spacing of the discs 14, will accommodate the peripheries of the discs 13, the discs on the shaft 11, being offset relative to the discs on the shaft 12, in order to permit of said interlapping of. the discs.
Screw openings 21 and 22, are provided in the opposite ends of the base 2, in order f that the device may be screwed to a table or other convenient place.
In manufacturing the discs 13 and 14, with the self-spacing hubs and flanges, from ten to twenty spacer members are done away with in a small Sharpener of the size i1- lustrated, thus reducing the cost of manufacture and assembling the device.
Having described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure byl Letters Patent is:-
1. A blade Sharpener embracing a base having side walls forming bearings, a pair of spaced apart shafts mounted in said side walls and a series of independent disks mounted upon said shafts, the disks of one shaft overlapping the disks of another shaft, each of said disks having a projecting hub on one side and an annular flange on the other side.
2. A blade Sharpener embracing a base having side walls forming bearings, a pair of spaced apart shafts mounted in said side walls and a series of independent disks mounted upon said shafts, the disks of one shaft overlapping the disks of another shaft, each of said disks having a projecting hub on one side and an annular flange on the other side, the diameter of said flange being greater than the diameter of said hub.
3. In a blade Sharpener a base, a pair of spaced apart shafts and cutting discs rotatably mounted upon said shafts, the discs of one of said shafts interlapping with the discs of the other of said shafts, means whereby said discs are spaced apart7 said means embracing a hub on one side of each of said discs, and an annular flange on the ether side thereof.
Ll. In a blade Sharpener a base, a pair of spaced apart shafts and cutting` discs rotatably mounted upon said shafts, the dises of one of said shafts interlapping With the discs of the other of said shafts, means whereby 10 said discs are spaced apart, said means einbracing` a huh on one side of each of said discs, and an annular flange on the other side thereof, the diameter of said flanges being greater than the diameter of said hubs.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
