Be it known that I, IINKNEY L. FRENCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ruthven, in the county of Wilcox and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsl in Portable Planing Mills, of which the following is a'specific'ation.
This invention relates to portable planing mills, and more particularly to a frame or mounting for planing mills which may be readily assembled and disassembled.
An object of the invention is the provision of a planer mill support by means of which a mill may be readily transported from place to place where lumber is being cut, permitting the lumber to be dressed without transporting it to a distant planing mill.
A further object is to provide a support for a planing mill consisting of.y a base, uprights or standards, and suitable transverse and inclined braces connecting the uprights above the base, said parts being formed of beams having notches formed therein for the reception of the other members to be secured thereto, and being connected to each other by bolts or othersuitable fastening elements.

Referring to the drawings, the support consists of a base or foundation formed of longitudinal runners 1. As shown, the lower face of the front end of the runners is cut away or inclined upwardly at the forward end, as indicated at 2, permitting the apparatus to be more readily loaded on a log wagon or other vehicle by means of which the mill is to be transported. The runners are connected by transverse members 8. As shown, the upper faces of the runners are provided with recesses or 1923. Serial No. 644,639.
notches 4c in which the transverse members are arranged, as shown in Figure 8 of the drawings. The runners and transverse members are each provided with suitable openings 5 for the reception of bolts or other fasteningV elements. By providing the notches for the reception of the transverse members, a more rigid construction is produced and the parts of the foundation may be more readily assembled as the transverse members may be easily arranged in proper position on the runners by placing them in the notches or recesses. The support is provided with a plurality of upright posts or standards 6. As shown, the support is in the form of a rectangle in horizontal cross section and is provided with four corner posts. These posts Vare received in notches or recesses 7 in the transverse ymembers and are secured to the transverse members by means of bolts passing through openings 8.
The front corner posts are connected by a transverse member 9, arranged intermediate the ends of the posts and are further connected by a transverse 'member l() arranged adjacent the top of the post. The upper ends of the standards on each side are connected by upperv longitudinal memJ bers 11 which, as shown, project beyond the corner posts. Suitable diagonal braces 12 are arranged between the projecting portions of the longitudinal members and the corner posts and the ends of these braces are received in notches or recesses 13 formed in theposts and the longitudinal members.
The rear corner posts 'are connected by an upper transverse member 14 which is received in notches 15 in the corner posts. Transverse diagonal braces 16 are arranged between the corner posts and the transverse member and are received in notches 17 in thc v sides of the cornerlposts.
A' plainertmill 18 isadapted to be arranged on the base or foundation. As the planer mill may be of any construction, a detailed description thereof is deemed unnecessary. The mill is driven from a drive shaft 19, mounted in suitable bearings 20. As shown, the bearings are supported on the front corner posts and are received in notches 21 formed therein. The drive shaft is provided with a pulley 23 adapted to receive a belt (not shown) connected to any suitable source of po-wer. A second pulley 24 is mounted on the drive shaft and a belt 25 passes over this pulley and a pulley 26 mounted on a shaft 27. Theshaft .27 is carried by the planer mill and is supported in bearings 28 on the front of the mill. `When the Vdevicel is assembled, the end of the shaft may be supported abearing 29 carried by one of the front corner posts. rllhis shaft is further provided with a pulley 30 adapted to receive a belt 31 which drives a` shaft 32 on the bed of the planer mill, the belt passing over apulley 33 arranged on the shaft. The planer is provided" with a suitable train of gear-S34 by means of Awhich the parts of the planer mill are driven in the usual manner. Suitable Suction , pipes 35 and 3,6 are connected to a main .duct 37. The ends of these pipes are provided with hoods 38 Vand 39 arranged above and below the bed of the planer and adapted to collect the shavings formed when the planer is in operation. The end of the duct 37 is connected to a fan casing 40 having a fan (not shown)f mounted therein. The fan is mounted on a shaft 4l which is supported in suitable bearings 42. These bearings are mounted on a transverse member 43 arranged Ibehind and adjacent the transverse member 14. The fan shaft is provided with a pulley 44 adapted to receive avbelt 45 passing over a pulley 46 on the drive shaft 19. A shaft 47 is arranged at the rear vof the machine, beingsupported in suitable bearings 48 mounted in notches 49 adjacent therear ends ofthe upper longitudinal members 1,1. The shaft 47 is provided with a pulley 48 adapted to receive a belt 49, passing over a pulley 50, on the main shaft. The shaft 47 is further provided with a pulley 51 by means. of which power may be taken off for running other machinery.
Suitable means are, provided for adjusting the. tensionof thebelt y25 by means of which theplaner `mill gis ldriven .from the main shaft. As shown lin .Figure 4 of the drawings, a. pair.` of longitudinal .members 52 are arranged on one side of the runners and connected tothe transverse. members 3. A shaft 53, is mounted on these longitudinal .members and forms a pivotal support for an arm 54. This arm isprovided with an idler pulleyv bearing .against the belt 25. A lever 5.6 is pivotally mounted in one of the posts or standards and is connected to the arm 54 by means of a link 57.
It will be apparent that the entire support or frame may be readily disassembled Vfor moving it from place to place and in assembling, the recesses 1n the beams and post permit the parts to be quickly placed in proper position. The recesses 49 further permit the shaft 47 to be readily arranged in its proper position. In transporting the mill, the superstructure may be removed fromthe'b-ase, the fan and blower conduits taken down and the planer mill moved on the base or foundation. rlhe runners l facilitate placing the mill on a log wagonor other conveyance for the purpose of transportingit to a desired place.
It is to be understood that the form of the inventionherewith shown and described is-to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted ,to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
l. A support for portable planing mills comprising a pair of longitudinal runners, transverse .members connected to said runners forming a` base, uprights connected to said transverse members, upper transverse and longitudinal members connected to said uprights,y and diagonal bracing members connecting saidupper members/to said uprights.
2. A support for planing mills comprispair `of longitudinal runners, each of said runners being provided with a pair of spaced notches, transverse members connected to said runners and arranged in said notches, each of said transverse members being provided with notches adjacent each end, upright members connected to said transverse* members, and arranged in said notches, and upper transverse and longitudinal membersfconnected to said uprights.
