Check-Rein Holders"l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW H. ROGKWELL, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHECK-REIN HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,567, dated September 1, 1874; application led July 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ANDREW H. ROCKWELL, of Binghamton, in the countyof Broome, State of NewYork, `have invented a Check-Rein Holder, of 4 which the following is a specification: r
My invention relates tothe combination of a standard and stop-pin or spur with a springlever and hook; the 'object of the invention being to obviate the casual detachment of the check rein by the horse, and to prevent it from slipping to the right or left when in position; also, to hold the neck-strap.
Figure 1 in the accompanying drawings is a view of a check-rein holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the same with a section of the standard removed, showing the parts connected with the spring-lever and its movements.
The standard A has a stop-pin or spur, B, projecting from the back side, which engages with a hole in the check-rein, which is kept in place by a springflever, C. This lever works on a pin, a, between ears b, projecting from the standard A. The upper end of the lever engages with a spring, c, let into the standard,
which presses the lower` part against the end of the stoppin B, thereby etfectually preventing casual displacement by the horse, while the stoppin obviates Ithe slip of the reinen the standard by the movement of the horses head .to the right or left.
When the team is harnessed, the neck-strap is tirst hitched to the hook D 5 the check-rein is then passed over the standard A, and under the free end of' the lever C, which elevates it and depresses the spring c; the rein is then placed in position, when the lever closes upon it. The movements of the lever are shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
This device may be attached to the ordinary gig-tree or pad, in the usual manner.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the standard A, of the spring-lever U, stop-pin B, and hook D, all constructed substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
ANDREW H. ROCKWELL.
