LEI
UNITED 'STATES PATENT OFFICE JESSE HEAD TEAI., oF EDGEEIELD, TENNESSEE, ASsIeNoR 0E ONE-RALF To IRA ARCHIBALD CARTER, 0E AUGUSTA, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,298, dated August 18, 1874; application filed July 1, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
lBerit known that I, JESSE HEAD TEAL, of Edgefleld, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain Improvements in Rotary Engines; and I do l hereby declare that the following is a full and combination with Side anti-friction rollers, as
ameans for reducing the friction both upon the motor-eccentric and the abutment. Two or more eccentrics, B, are attached to the main shaft A. The outer edge of each eccentric ts against the inner surface of the cylinder in which it revolves, and a solid partition, N N, Figure 2, is used between each pair of eccentrics. The eccentrics B B are placedopposite to each other on the main shaft A, so that when one is at the highest part of the cylinder the other is at the lowest. C C are abutments connected to the stems D D, and drawn up and down by the connecting-linksE E, which are worked by the inner arms F F attached to the shaft G, supported by the columns H H. II are eccentrics of the same diameter as the eccentrics B B, and occupy the same that the eccentrics I I may be placed nearer to or farther from the cylinder-covers. J J are connecting-rods, which connect the eccentrics I I with the outer arms F F. Thus, as each eccentric B rises or falls in its cylinder, its abutment is raised or lowered to a corresponding extent. K andL Lare anti-friction rollers, but the abutment C may be fitted to run in grooves, as in Fig. 2, and without the rollers. M M are steam-chests, in which any suitable valves may be used for the purpose of the i11- gress or'egress and cutting off of steam, or reversing the engine, and such valves may be actuated in many ways well understood by those skilled in the art. The main Shaft A may be kept central by means of set-screws applied radially to the shaft in the ordinary.
manner, so as to adjust the sections of its bearings as wear takes place.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The abutment C, and the motor-eccentrics B, in combination with the eccentrics I I,
of equal throw, and arranged in positions corresponding to the motor-eccentrics, whereby the movement of the abutments is made equal to the throw of the motor-eccentrics.
2. The combination, with the abutments C and the eccentrics B, of the packing and antifriction rollers K L L, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
J. R. TEAL.
