To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gnovnn lflnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Temple Hill, in the county of Pope and State of Illinois, have invented or discovered certain new and useful improvements in Swinging Scaffolds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a swinging scaffold more especially intended to be suspended in the upper part of a hay or grain barn in convenient position for use in putting up or adjusting a hay carrier which is to be located in the top of the barn. The improved scaffold comprises supporting rods provided at their upper ends with hooks to be engaged with the rafters of the barn between the boards constitutlng the sheathing on which the shingles or other roof coverings are laid, these boards being usually spaced apart so that the hooks may engage the rafters between the same; or the hooks may be engaged with suitable staples or the like driven into or bolted to the rafters. The supporting rods are bent into suitable shape at their low er ends to afford stirrups adapted to hold a board which will extend between said supporting rods. Jointed to each of the stirrups is a rigid brace rod adapted to be hooked into a staple or the like secured to a rafter or other suitable support, these brace rods being for the purpose of holding the scaffold steady when in use. The scaffold is intended to be made in sections extending the entire length of the barn so as to afford convenient access to a hay carrier when adjusted to different positions lengthwise of the barn in which said hay carrier may be mounted. To each scaffold section is preferably connected a rope running over a pulley suspended from a rafter or the like, said rope extending downward so as to be conveniently accessible from below and by means of this rope the scaffold, when not in use, may be swung upward close to the rafters and out of the way of the hay carrier, the scaffold being held in such out-ofthe-way position by securing the end of the rope below, or in any other suitable man ner.

In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating the invention. Fig. 2 is an end view showing the scaffold in full lines in working position, and in dotted lines when swung up out of the way.

Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes one of the scaffold supports which preferably 6 consists of a metal rod provided at its top with a hook 13 and at its lower end with a looped stirrup 1 f. Jointed to each stirrup 1 1 is a brace rod 15 preferably provided with a hook 16. The hooks 16 are, in practice, engaged with staples or the like mounted on the rafters or other parts of the roof, as hereinbefore stated, and as indicated in the drawing, and thus serve to steady and hold the scaffold positively in working position. These scaffold supports when in use are intended to be suspended fromthe rafters 1'? of the barn, either by being hooked directly on to said rafters between the sheathing boards or by being engaged with other suitable supports attached to the rafters. In practice a plurality of these swinging scaffolds extending practically the entire length of the barn will be provided for use in putting up and adjusting the hay carrier. Connected with each scaffold section is a rope 19 passing over a pulley 20 and by means of which rope, which extends down so as to be conveniently reached from below, the scaffold may, when not in use, be swung up close to the rafters and maintained in such position by securing the end of the rope to a nail or cleat down below.

From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides a suitable scaffold intended to remain permanently in place and by means of which convenient access to a hay carrier is afforded, thus obviating the inconvenience of sending up a man to climb aloneon the track of the hay carrier in adjusting or fixing the same. The sections of the improved scaffold are intended to extend practically the entire length of the hay carrier track so as to afford convenient access to the hay carrier at any point along said track, for fixing or adjusting the hay carrier. When the scafi old is not in use it can be swung up and maintained in position out of the way so as not to interfere with the hay carrier.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. The herein described swinging scaffold, for use in hay barns or the like comprising supports each consisting of a rod shaped to provide a hook at its upper end and a looped stirrup at its lower end, these stirrups being oi? suitable size and shape to receive a. board to serve as the scaffold platform, combined with rigid brace rods connected with said stirrups and by means of which the scaffold may be positively steadied and held in working position.
