I J. .1. FAZIO. CIGARETTE RECEPTACLEf' APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 22. 1920- Patented Nov. 21, 1922.
Patented Nov. 21, 1922.
init al? JAMES I. FAZIO, YOUNGSTOW'N, OHIO.
CIGARETTE RECEPTACLE.
Application filed September 29, 1920. Serial No. 413,543.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES 1. Euro, citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in containers especially adapted for the reception of cigarettes.
An important' object of this invention is to provide a container for cigarettes having novel means whereby the same may beheld in a closed position and which may be readily opened when desired.
The container forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to receive either individual cigarettes or the cigarettes in the original packages and in either case, the cigarettes are fully protected so that the same'will not, while being carried on ones person, lose tobacco or become mutilated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a receptacle for cigarettes having a single U-shaped spring which, in addition to forming a locking means for the cover swings the cover to an open position immediately upon being released.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container for cigarettes which is neat in appearance, desirable in use, and cheap to manufacture.
)ther objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved container, the cover of the same being shown open,
Figure 2 is a central vertical sectional view through the container, the cover being shown closed,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the container,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation of the same,
Figure 5 is a detail elevation of the container, the view illustrating a modified form of hinge for connecting the cover to the body of the container.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 designates the body of the improved receptacle which may be formed of any suitable material such as copper, brass, plated ware, or, in fact, any metal. Precious metals, such as gold or silver may also be employed in the manufacture of the improved. container. The body 10 is of sufiicient depth and width to receive a package of about twenty cigarettes though it is obvious that other sized containers may be employed for receiving cigarette packages containing a larger or 1 smaller number of cigarettes.
A cover 12 is provided with side walls 13 and end walls 14, one of which may be con nected to the body by means of a hinge 16. The hinge may be of the style indicated in Figure 4 ofthe drawing, or may be as illustrated in Figure 5, wherein the cover and the body are shown as provided with spaced hinge barrels 18 adapted to be alined for receiving a pivot pin 20.
As illustrated in Figure 2, the cover 12 is adapted to receive the upper portion or" the body 10 and the lower edge of the cover engages a continuous outwardly extending bead or shoulder 22 formed in the body adjacent the upper end of the same. The bead 22, as will be noted, serves as a stop element for limiting the movement of the cover.
With reference to Figure 2 in particular, it will be observed that a U-shaped spring 25 is arranged within the body of the container and is provided with side arms 26 and 28 which extend along the side walls 30 of the body and which are connected by a bight portion 32 arranged flatly in contact with the bottom 34 of the container.
The upper end of the spring arm 26 is formed with a V-shaped laterally projecting head 36 adapted to be received within a similar notch 38 in one side wall lei of the cover so that the cover will be detachably held closed. The spring arm 26 is provided below the head 36 with a laterally extending projection 39 in the form of a button which is slidably extended through an opening 40 in one side wall 30 of the container so that the same may be depressed manually. By pushing the button 39 inwardly the laterally projecting \l shaped head 36 will be disengaged from the cover so as to permit the cover to open.
The spring arm 28 has its upper portion offset as indicated at i3 and its terminal portion engaged with the adjacent side of iris:
the cover so that immediately upon the release of the cover by a manual depression of the projection 39, the spring arm 28 will swing the cover open. The spring arm 28 is crimped to form a shoulder d5 which, when the cover is swung to an open position, is adapted to be received within the adjacent portion of the groove formed by the bead 22. fined within the groove formed by the head 22, the accidental displacement of the spring isprevented. The arm 28 is, of course, held in position by means of the button39.
It is thus apparent thatthe bead 22 serves as a means for confining the spring in position in addition to limiting the'niovement ot the cover. If desired, the spring arm 26 may be provided with a projection or shoulder 4-6 adapted to be received within the groove formed by the head 22.
In the manufacture of the improved container, the bottom 34- of the same .may be provided with a plurality of transverse corrugations 50 which form amatch scratching surface.
With reference to the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will. be observed that a container constructed in accordance with this invention is capable of receiving either individual cigarettes 01' cigarettes in the package. The container is of a size which permits the same to be conveniently carried in ones pocket and as the container is not possessed of any objectionable projections the same is rendered extremely desirable in use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A container comprising a body provided witha continuous outwardly projecting shoulder forming an interior groove, a
With the shoulder to thus con cover hingedly connected to said body and engaged with said shoulder in closed posiiilOI1 'l11Cl a spring. arranged within said container and having one end portion engaged with said cover for swinging the same to an open position, said spring being provided with a shoulder adapted to be received with in said groove for securing the spring in position with the cover in open position.
2. A container comprising a body provided with a continuous outwardly projecting shoulder forming an interior groove, a
hingedlyconnected to the body, and a U- shaped spring arranged within said body and provided with a pair of arms, theterinmal portion oi: one of. said arms being engaged with said cover for swinging the same toan open positiomthe terminal portion of tlie other arm being provided with a laterally projecting head adapted for engaging said cover to secure the same in position, said arms being each provided'with a projection adapted to be received alternately within said groove upon opening and closing said cover. v a
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
